CHULA VISTA (KGTV) — Three children are recovering Sunday morning after they were struck by a car in the Otay Ranch neighborhood of Montecito Village. The crash happened Saturday just before 5 p.m. on Santa Victoria Avenue, about a block east of Muroaka Elementary School. According to Chula Vista Police, the pedestrians were crossing the street when they were struck by a silver 2018 Toyota Corolla. The children were not in a marked crosswalk.The two younger children were transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for their injuries, said CVPD officer Justin Zualet. Witnesses at the scene described them in good condition.The 15-year old female was transported in critical but stable condition with a head injury, lacerations, and abrasions.Zualet said all are expected to survive.The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Police at the scene said the driver, a male in his 50s, told officers he was using his cell phone at the time of the crash. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Two drivers were arrested at a checkpoint for driving under the influence of alcohol and one driver was arrested on an outstanding warrant, authorities said today.The checkpoint was set up in the 600 block of Palomar Street between 7 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Officer Oscar Miranda of the Chula Vista Police Department.Of the 1,118 vehicles traveling through the checkpoint, 406 were screened and six drivers were given sobriety tests, Miranda said.Officers issued 12 citations to drivers who were unlicensed or had a suspended license, Miranda said. Trenelle Cannon will be in court again on Friday for reportedly resisting arrest. He is currently being held on ,000 bail. A 12-second-long video that surfaced on social media showed Cannon being struck by police officers. Video later released by police showed what happened in the moments leading up the incident. In the bodycam and helicopter video, Cannon can be seen tackling a police officer before other officers get involved. He was booked into jail and charged with carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, robbery, and identity theft, according to SDPD."A 12 second video of this arrest was shared on social media without any context or details provided," police said in a news release.According to police, undercover officers had been conducting surveillance of Cannon on the 600 block of E Street in Chula Vista when they requested uniform officers to arrest him. SDPD Chief David Nisleit said Cannon then fled from officers, forcing police to give chase. At some point during the chase, a weapon was recovered where a witness last saw Cannon.Nisleit said Cannon was located once again in the area of 1100 4th Ave., where he got into a car with four others. The vehicle then proceeded to get onto Interstate 5, where officers conducted a traffic stop.During the traffic stop, Nisleit said Cannon tackled an officer to the ground, prompting multiple officers to assist in an arrest. Nisleit said officers feared Cannon had another weapon and used a "combination of physical force and distraction strikes" to restrain him."This is a very important key to note, once restrained and no longer a threat to officers no additional force was used on Cannon," Nisleit said.Nisleit said Cannon and the officers involved were not injured, aside from slight abrasions.Internal Affairs detectives were notified of the arrest and will evaluate officers' use of force and whether they followed policy. Based on the social media video and body-camera video, Nisleit said that he believed the appropriate amount of force was used by officers.Shakira Smith, who identifies herself as Cannon’s girlfriend, as well as Cannon’s mother spoke at a news conference Wednesday.Smith said she and Cannon were in a car with several friends when they were pulled over. (KGTV) — Police say they rescued a kidnapping victim this week, after the man was able to signal for help through a car's cracked window as the suspect tasked with guarding him slept.Sunday night, a 36-year-old man was attacked by two men and thrown into a pick-up truck while walking to his car from a restaurant in the 600 block of Broadway, Chula Vista Police said.Police said the suspects took the victim to a second location near Sequoia St. and Presidio Point Ct. and handed him off to a third suspect waiting in a parked car. While the suspect in the front seat was supposed to be watching the victim in the backseat, he fell asleep instead, police say.Police say that's when the victim was able to signal for help, waving a white cloth out of a slightly cracked open window in the backseat. A passerby spotted the victim flagging for help at about 11:30 a.m. Monday and called police.Police arrived and rescued the man and arrested the sleeping guard.That's when the suspected pick-up originally used to abduct the victim drove past, police said. Police say they arrested one of the two men inside the truck who they believe to have been involved with Sunday's incident.Police are still looking for a third suspect.The motive behind the abduction remains unclear, police said, but it didn't appear the victim knew the kidnappers.The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the ordeal, police added. 1470
