SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Connecting children, teens, and families to the power of reading has been the mission of San Diego nonprofit Words Alive for more than two decades.During this pandemic, they haven’t skipped a beat.“The San Diego community is so deeply invested in the importance of literacy and just how critical literacy and education are for the success of our students,” said Rachael Orose, Executive Director for Words Alive.Teaching kids reading and writing skills at a young age is key to that success. Orose said through Words Alive, teachers and volunteers are making sure all students have the opportunity and tools to learn through several different programs, including Read Aloud, Teen Services & Family Literacy.“All of the data tells us if we can make you a reader, your family will be a reader. The students who we serve are often in low-income neighborhoods; they’re wrestling with homelessness, hunger, poverty, violence,” she said. This year alone, Words Alive has received thousand of book donations through community partnerships, most recently on Wednesday.“We picked up just over 1,700 books thanks to a partnership with the San Diego Council on Literacy and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Those books are zero to 18, they’re headed to the Monarch School in the coming weeks,” she said.“With Words Alive, the books actually belong to the students, they’re able to write in them, they’re able to annotate them” said Jeffra Becknell, who teaches high school history at Monarch School, which serves students K-12 impacted by homelessness. “Having a physical book in their hand is such a wonderful feeling.”Becknell has been participating with Words Alive’s Adolescent Book Group program for ten years. “The Adolescent Book Group has been an amazing experience for my students and me; the volunteers come into the classroom, we read a book together, and then we have a book club discussion about it,” she said.During this pandemic, discussions have moved online, but the mission has remained the same.“We had our Adolescent Book Group online; we had it as a Zoom call. Clearly, it’s really different, but it was the same conversation,” said Becknell.Perhaps most importantly, Orose said Words Alive makes representation a priority.“The content reflects their lived experience, the characters look like the students we serve, the authors have similar experiences,” she said.Words Alive currently has more than 1,000 volunteers but is always looking for more. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Charles Schwab is the latest large investment firm to offer fractional stocks as a way to get more people to invest. The move puts more high-dollar, blue chip stocks within reach for younger customers."It's a big win to consumers in general," says Steven Fox, the owner of Next Gen Financial Planning. "That's particularly helpful for younger investors because they typically tend to have smaller accounts."A recent report says that 66% of millennials say they're afraid of the stock market. Fox thinks it's because that generation watched their parents go through multiple downturns and were turned off by its volatility. But, Fox says fractional stocks, and other new ideas from large companies are enticing more people to invest. He says many firms are starting to offer perks like zero-commission trades, fractional stocks, and on-line based accounts to help people save money and invest more."It may only be 1%, but for a lot of people over a long period of time, as you account grows more and more, that 1% can mean a difference of tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars that you would have available to pull out later in life."Fox says it also helps people keep a more diverse portfolio. He says this is the start of a shift to more direct indexing, where investors will be able to use fractional stocks to create their own groups of investments, rather than buying pre-set mutual funds or indexes."You're gonna see more technology come out that makes it easy to do direct indexing and consumers are going to see more and more options here," says Fox. 1585

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - By a unanimous vote, the San Diego City Council voted Monday to hike pedicab fees, making it nearly twice as costly to be a pedicab driver.      Police say the increase for annual operator fees from 2 to 9 is needed because of extra enforcement, including aggressive inspections and undercover operations targeting price gouging.Ali Horuz, who manages four different pedicab companies, says the higher fees will be a hardship, especially for drivers getting into the business.  He says right now, the local market is short about 50 drivers."It's going to be harder to find qualified drivers. We're competing against Uber and Lyft. It's definitely going to affect the market, where we are going to see fewer pedicab drivers," said Horuz. While the number of drivers is shrinking, the regulations may be increasing.  Citing complaints from the community, Councilman Chris Ward wants the city to set a uniform rate structure, while banning loud horns, flashing lights and amplified music. Horuz says the lights and loud horns are needed safety precautions, while overly loud music is a product of a few bad drivers.A council committee will look at the proposal Wednesday. 1240

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As the weather across San Diego County warms, rattlesnakes are out if full force.Rattlesnakes live throughout Southern California and live in the deserts as well as along the coast, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The department says most bites happen from April to October when the snakes and people are most active outdoors. RELATED: Deadly backyard encounter could point to dangerous snake season“Snakes really get an unfair bad rap, when they actually play an important role in California’s ecosystems,” said CDFW’s Keep Me Wild program coordinator Lesa Johnston. The potential of running into a rattlesnake shouldn’t deter anyone from enjoying the great outdoors, the department adds. According to the California Poison Control System, the chances of being bitten are small when compared with the risk of other environmental injuries. RELATED: What to do if you or a pet are bitten by a rattlesnake“Like most wild animals, snakes prefer to keep to themselves and are not naturally aggressive. Taking the time to learn about safety precautions before going outdoors can make all the difference,” Johnston added. The department says rattlesnakes generally aren’t aggressive and will likely retreat if given room and not provoked or threatened. “Most bites occur when a rattlesnake is handled or accidentally brushed against by someone walking or climbing,” the department says on their website. If you are bitten by a rattlesnake, the department recommends the following: Stay calm but act quickly.Remove watches, rings, etc., which may constrict swelling.Transport the victim to the nearest medical facility. For more first aid information call the California Poison Control System at (800) 222-1222. 1761
