SAN DIEGO (KGTV): In the wake of Starbucks and Disney doing away with plastic straws, environmental groups in San Diego want the city to do the same.The Surfrider Foundation is sponsoring a proposal that the San Diego City Council will vote on in September to require restaurants to only offer straws to customers who request them, instead of giving them out with every drink.They're also pushing for a ban on Styrofoam take-out containers.Natalie Roberts-Decarli, the Interim Executive Director of I Love a Clean San Diego, says her group wants people to be more conscious of the waste they create in their daily lives."Straws kind of fly around easily, they blow away easily, and they're not able to be recycled," she says. "So they end up in our landfills or just litter."At one ocean clean up event last year, I Love a Clean San Diego found 6,000 straws on the coast in just a few hours. Roberts-Decarli says plastic straws are always in the top ten items of trash they find."There's no perfect answer right now. Everyone is still trying to work together to come up with the best solution," she says.Many local restaurants have already taken that step. According to Surfrider, more than 100 restaurants in San Diego County are certified as "Ocean Friendly," meaning they follow a list of criteria for recycling and avoiding plastic. The full list is on their website.Marketing analysts say changes from big companies like Starbucks and Disney mean this will likely spread and expand."It raises the consciousness of consumers and it sets rising expectations in consumers," says Heather Honea, the Chair of San Diego State University's Marketing Department in the Fowler School of Business."By people banning it and having discussions about whether it's bad or good or what does it mean, how does it affect them, it creates top of mind salience that changes people's perspectives on things because they become aware of the topic. And for a moment, they think about it, ponder it and reconcile how they think about it," she says.Environmental groups say making the change would be easy for consumers, who could carry reusable straws in their purses or car glove compartments. They compare it to the reusable grocery bag change that happened in San Diego over the last few years.However, not everyone supports the idea. Some warn that the ban could be discriminatory against people with disabilities, many of whom require straws. (KGTV) - Honor Flight is a National organization that takes older veterans to Washington D.C. to visit war memorials, and the nonprofit just announced that all flights in 2020 will be postponed. For Honor Flight San Diego, the two canceled trips in 2020 means 160 World War II and Korean War veterans will have to wait until May of 2021 to take the trip, putting a year and a half between trips. Nationally, an estimated 20,000 veterans are being impacted by 2020’s cancellations.Holly Shaffner is the Director of Public Relations for Honor Flight San Diego and said the local chapter is still trying to find ways to keep the excitement for the veterans who are unable to travel this year. She said one of the emotional surprises for the veterans on the trip is “mail call,” when they surprise the group with a package of letters from family, friends and strangers thanking them for their service. This is to pay tribute to getting letters from home while they were in the service.“In World War II they didn’t have the technology that we have today where you can do FaceTime and emails,” said Shaffner.Honor Flight San Diego has already collected about 1,900 letters that they had planned to give out to the veterans on the 2020 trip, so organizers decided to use these letters to lift the spirits of the veterans who now have to wait a year for the trip. Honor Flight will be putting together mail call packages to mail to the veterans homes for them to open, hopefully giving them something to look forward to.Shaffner said one of the hardest realizations for them is acknowledging that of the World War II veterans on the list, not all of them will still be alive.“The reality for us is that when we start making the phone calls for them to go on that trip in May, there will be veterans that have passed away and there will be veterans that cannot travel,” she said.She hopes sending the letters to their home will help keep their spirits high during this lull.Winona Ruth Gunther is 100 years old and is one of the World War II veterans who was supposed to go in 2020. She said she’s worried about public places right now so she respects the decision to wait until 2021.“At my age you really take a chance when you get into a crowd and an airplane particularly,” she said.She worked as a corpsman in the Hospital Corps of the Navy in World War II. She has stories of caring for injured people in California and says those hard memories are the ones that stay with her. She’s already seen many of the memorials in Washington D.C., but said she was looking forward to going with the Honor Flight group because of the connection they all will feel seeing these memorials together.“It’s the camaraderie that you have with people that have similar experiences that you look forward to,” she said.Now, she waits for May of 2021, with some surprise letters heading her way thanks to Honor Flight.Shaffner said another obstacle the nonprofit is facing is keeping funding up. When the veterans are taken to Washington D.C., they don’t pay a dime. Everything, from the flight to the food, is paid for by donations. She said it costs about 0,000 for the two trips from San Diego. Shaffner said right now, they only have enough money raised for one trip in 2021. She said if they could, they would take even more than the planned 160 people next year to make up for the two lost trips in 2020, but that would be dependent on funding, which isn’t possible right now. 3487

SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) -- A debate is unfolding across the country, and right here in San Diego over how and when to reopen schools during this pandemic.With the new school year is quickly approaching, and the number of coronavirus cases continuing to surge locally, many teachers are left with concerns about opening their classrooms.The California Teachers Association (CTA), one of the largest teachers unions, urging state lawmakers to hold off reopening schools until it is proven to be safe enough."It is not reasonable for us to think that it’s safe for us to go back to schools," said E. Toby Boyd, the president of CTA who heard from teachers across the state. "We have to look at what is being mentioned in terms of the science, the facts, and how the disease is being spread."People are very afraid, very concerned because they either have underlying health conditions or someone in their household does," said Kisha Borden, the president of the San Diego Education Association (SDEA). "I'm hearing from educators of all ages who are very concerned about being put into an enclosed space, their classroom, with 25 to 30 children without the proper protocols in place."The San Diego Unified School District will start the 2020-2021 school year on Aug. 31 with an option of in-person or online distance learning.But, Borden said before teachers return, they have some demands."We're asking for at least a decline in cases over 14 days so that we're not bringing back large groups of people during a time when we're seeing an increase in cases," she said.The union would also like to see widespread, accessible, and frequent COVID-19 testing of students, staff, and parents when necessary, and fully-funded doctor recommended prevention measures.The district has listened to the union's concerns, and Borden said, after the latest meeting, she's feeling hopeful."I'm encouraged, the last statement that came from the district said that they'd like to meet with health professionals, they'd like to meet with public safety experts and really come up with clear medically proven guidelines and timelines around what is going to be necessary to bring students and staff back into our classrooms," she said.SDEA sent ABC 10News the following statement 2261

San Diego (KGTV)- Just weeks ago the Veterans Village of San Diego wasn’t sure they’d have the money to fund their annual Stand Down event. But thanks to generous sponsors, the organization is helping hundreds of homeless veterans this weekend. The three-day event is being held at San Diego High School. More than 700 veterans are expected to participate in the event throughout the weekend. A variety of services is being offered. Some veterans say they are in desperate need of housing, while others tell 10News they are just fighting to keep the roofs they already have over their heads. “I’m minding my own business, next thing I hear knocks on the door ‘hey you can’t park here,’” says Vietnam Veteran Robert Ewing who was given 15 parking tickets for his motor home in the last three months. “That’s why I’m here trying to get rid of these.”Ewing says it has been a struggle trying to find a safe place to park his motor home. Among a variety of services, Homeless Court is being provided at the annual Stand Down event. “The City Council needs to sleep on the streets for a couple of nights and see what the homeless go through. It’s no joke,” says Ewing. For more than three decades, the Veterans Village of San Diego has been putting together this event. It brings in more than 100 organizations to help the homeless. Even though donations were low a few weeks ago, organizers say they were never going to cancel the event. They are just grateful for their donors, so they did not have to scale the event down. 1529
