SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Food Bank on Thursday selected 35 nonprofit organizations around the county with the goal of giving them the food and supplies they need to continue helping families in their area.La Maestra Community Health Center provides health and support services to families from the South Bay to East County. Many of those they serve come from low-income households.Before the COVID-19 pandemic, they helped about 300 families a week. Since then, that number has doubled, and they’re now feeding close to 600 families a week.At a news conference with mayors from San Diego, Chula Vista, and Escondido, the San Diego Food Bank announced the kickoff of their “Super Pantries” program, where they have partnered with 35 pre-selected organizations.Instead of holding the mass distribution food events that they’ve done in the past, the Food Bank will now focus on providing these organizations with food and supplies.San Diego Food Bank President/CEO James Floros said, “Now with the grass roots approach, they can go into their communities and get what they need.”Each organization will also get a check for ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three cars were damaged during a pursuit through Cortez Hill Monday afternoon. According to police, the chase began around 3:50 p.m. at the intersection of Ninth Avenue and Beech Street. The reason for the chase was unclear. The chase ended a short distance away on the 1300 block of Park Boulevard. During the chase, the suspect struck three other vehicles, two of which were parked. Two suspects were arrested and police say no serious injuries were reported following the crash. 510

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego International Airport is making travel more accessible to blind and visually-impaired customers.They've partnered with San Diego startup Aira, a company which uses augmented reality to connect people with visual impairments to live agents.Through smart glasses or a smartphone camera, the agent becomes the customer's eyes, guiding them through the airport.While users typically pay a monthly Aira subscription, the service is now available free at select airports, helping customers through security, to restaurants, and baggage claim."My first time that I traveled alone after losing my vision, I was a wreck, I mean a wreck," said Maria Johnson, who became legally blind as an adult.“The thing about having Aira with you when traveling is you always have somebody with you," said Johnson.Johnson has a rare mitochondrial disease and started losing her vision six years ago. Shortly after her 50th birthday, she was legally blind. “I’m a mom, I have two kids, I’m a group fitness instructor, I was running a boot camp and running classes all over San Diego, and all of a sudden this happened," said Johnson.Johnson has used adaptive technologies like Aira to adjust to her new reality but admits it was difficult to ask for help in the beginning.“The beauty of it is that’s what the agent is there for, no job is too small or too big for an Aira agent," said Johnson.The Aira agent not only can see where the customer is but has access to an airport map.Airport officials say it's part of a broader mission to continue innovating at Lindbergh. 1591

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three Port of San Diego Harbor Police officers tested positive for coronavirus, the department announced Wednesday.After learning of the positive results, the Port of San Diego says it notified the department and port staff.The officers are isolated and undergoing treatment at their homes and will seek further care should it be necessary. Their condition is unclear at this time.The department also said it’s working with San Diego County health officials to conduct contract tracing and notify people who had close contact with the officers.“Prioritizing the health and well-being of the public, our partners, and Port employees and their families, the Port encourages and reminds the public, for their health as well as that of first responders, to wear face coverings, practice and maintain social distancing, wash hands frequently, and avoid crowded spaces and gatherings,” the Port of San Diego said in a news release. 953

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three men were arrested in Tijuana for the brutal murder of three teens in Mexico, including two from San Diego. The three suspects, identified only as Fabricio, Esteban Manuel and Alejandro were arrested at an unknown time, authorities in Mexico say. 17-year-old Christopher Alexis Gomez and 18-year-old Juan Suarez Ojeda were found shot to death in Tijuana on November 25. Both teenagers attended O'Farrell Charter School in Encanto. Another teen believed to be Ojeda’s friend was also killed. RELATED: Two San Diegans, Mexican teen shot to death in TijuanaGomez’s cousin, Katheryn Garcia, said the two were likely tortured in different locations before being killed execution-style in front of a housing complex. Garcia said her cousin planned to head to a barbecue in Ensenada on Friday. Investigators believe all three teenagers were taken from an apartment complex at gunpoint before being killed. It’s still unknown why the teens may have been targeted.
