SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police searched Thursday for a hit-and-run driver who ran a red light at a Mission Valley intersection and slammed into another car, seriously injuring it's 60-year-old driver.The crash was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Friars and Frazee roads, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.A 60-year-old woman was driving a 2007 Lexus sedan southbound on Frazee Road when a man driving a blue Ford pickup truck westbound on Friars Road ran a red light at Frazee and crashed into the driver's side of the Lexus, Heims said.The pickup driver kept driving, then pulled over a short distance away before he got out and ran away, the officer said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Port of San Diego announced Monday a three-year pilot project to test the use of concrete tide pools as a shoreline stabilizing tool. The concrete company ECOncrete will analyze the efficacy of its concrete tide pools as a possible replacement for traditional shoreline-stabilizing tools like rock armoring. The concrete tide pools will also serve as ecosystems for aquatic animals and organisms that live in natural tide pools. The tide pools interlock like puzzle pieces and are made of low carbon concrete that, according to the company, is environmentally safe and tailored to the environment in which its placed. ECOncrete plans to install 72 of the concrete tide pools across three areas of Harbor Island's shoreline, according to the Port of San Diego. ``ECOncrete's Coastal Star tide pools have great potential to provide many benefits for San Diego Bay,'' said Port of San Diego Board Chair Garry Bonelli. ``The Port looks forward to seeing if they can provide shoreline stabilization, help guard against coastal flooding, and improve the ecology of our bay water.'' The project is the eighth approved in the Port of San Diego's Blue Economy Incubator, which is intended to streamline the process in which businesses can launch pilot projects for so-called blue technology. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt will change its home port from San Diego to Bremerton, Washington, ahead of scheduled maintenance slated for next summer, the Navy announced Wednesday.The ship, which is currently deployed in the Western Pacific, will enter Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for scheduled maintenance known as docking planned incremental availability, or DPIA.Lt. Travis Callaghan said the maintenance required to maintain the Nimitz-class carrier's service life is more involved than what can be done pier- side in San Diego. A cool zone will open at noon today in the former Sears building at Chula Vista Center, providing socially distant and disinfected spaces to beat the heat.With a heat wave expected this weekend and into next week and the city's recreation centers and libraries closed to the public due to the pandemic, the city issued a statement saying the opening of a cool zone was paramount.The Chula Vista cool zone will be open when temperatures exceed 85 degrees, and will be operated by city recreation staff. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Padres are scheduled to face an opponent at Petco Park for the first time in 2020 Monday, nearly four months later than planned, playing the Los Angeles Angels in an exhibition game.The March 26 start to the regular season -- which included the Padres opening day game against the Colorado Rockies at Petco Park -- was all wiped out by the coronavirus outbreak.Under the revised schedule which calls for the regular season to begin Thursday, teams can play up to three exhibition games. The Padres other exhibition game will be on Wednesday, also against the Angels, at Angel Stadium, in preparation for opening day Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park."I think everybody's excited to play somebody else," Padres first-year manager Jayce Tingler told reporters in a Zoom conference Friday. "We've been banging heads for a while. It's going to be really good getting to see another team and just getting to go compete."The Padres played 16 intrasquad games since beginning "summer camp" July 3.Like most sporting events around the world, fans will be barred from attending Monday's game under public health directives prohibiting public events and gatherings.The game will be different from Padre games in past seasons for several reasons.Major League Baseball has instituted a set of health and safety protocols that will effect the game even before the first pitch. There will be no pre-game exchange of lineup cards. Instead, each team will input their lineup card into a mobile app provided by MLB.Umpires will then print lineup cards for both teams approximately 15 minutes before the first pitch.
