Moderna is asking American regulators to allow emergency use of its COVID-19 vaccine. It says its final results show the vaccine is 94% effective.The drug maker says it had 196 COVID-19 cases so far in its study. It says 185 of those participants received the placebo, while 11 got the real vaccine. They use what's called messenger RNA (mRNA) technology. The virus' genetic code is injected into the body so it can instruct cells on what antibodies to produce.It hasn't been approved to be used in a commercial vaccine before.“In the future, it's clearly going to be tough to beat RNA vaccines for speed and that's a wonderful thing. Just this demonstration of how incredibly fast they can move has been great. How effective they can be, I think will depend on a particular disease,” said Shane Crotty, Ph.D. with the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.Crotty says the narrowest application for this vaccine technology in the future is a similar situation where there's a new emerging virus."The mRNA vaccine has been tried for other infectious diseases and they have been investigated for cancer. There's a whole area of trying to vaccine against cancer, which has kind of been an elusive target,” said Dr. Alessandro Sette with the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.A big question with an mRNA vaccine is how long its protection will last. MOSIDA, Utah – Not too far south of Salt Lake City, you will find the Bateman Dairy Farm. It’s a farm where the cattle have quite the view. The Wasatch Mountain Range rises up across Utah Lake.“The right way to take care of cows is to make them happy and comfortable,” said Brad Bateman.Bateman has worked the farm since he was a small boy alongside his family.“There was no hanging out or having fun here; it was all work,” he said with a chuckle. “Our family developed the farm ground and broke a lot of this ground out of sagebrush.”Today, there are more than 20,000 head of dairy cows and feeding them can be a tall order.However, sometimes life can present a unique opportunity for growth.“We want to welcome you to the first-ever controlled environment indoor farm for animal feed,” said Steve Lindsley, president of Grov Technologies.Call it a marriage between farming and technology, with an eco-friendlier “hoof print.”“We call the machine, Olympus, Lindsley said, pointing to the large tower stretching nearly to the roof of the building.“Each of these machines will replace 35 to 50 acres of land.”Lindsley said to grow the cow feed indoors with Olympus only takes five percent of the water of traditional farming.“The seeds are planted on a tray, and within about five to six days, we come out with a beautiful harvest,” Lindsley said.Lindsley’s background is in tech but he envisions towers like Olympus helping anywhere rainwater is scarce.“There are so many challenges with water,” Lindsley explained. “You just think about the West, you think about California, the panhandle of Texas. There are so many places that could benefit from this technology.”For the Bateman farm, this year the weather wasn’t so much of an issue, it was COVID-19. The virus disrupted supply lines all over the world and put farms like the Batemans in danger of running out of feed.“We just couldn’t get into places to get the animal feed,” Bateman explained. “Places like Washington state, they wouldn’t even let our trucks in.”Bateman said the timing of the partnership couldn’t have been better.“The cows love this stuff,” he said with a smile. “This is like cow candy for them.”Now, Bateman sleeps a bit better at night knowing his cows will get fed regardless of the weather or a worldwide pandemic.“This whole thing has really brought home the importance of having a fresh, local supply of feed,” Bateman said. “This is a really big thing for us and feeling secure about our future.” 2488

It also made an immediate rule change that future head coaching positions need to include at least two interviews with external, minority candidates.“There's good evidence (that) both increasing the quality of a climate in the workplace and increasing the diversity of the workforce tends to be associated with better outcomes, especially in companies that are trying to be innovative in their production process, marketing and the like,” said Donald Tomaskovic-Devey, UMASS equity and inclusion expert.There are proven methods for increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace. They include setting clear measurable goals, being transparent, and companies holding themselves accountable.Experts say it’s not only good for employees and business, but this shift in speaking up and change by industry leaders can spark even more influence.“You could imagine firms saying I’m not going to support the reelection campaigns of candidates who are making racist statements or stoking racial divisions,” said Tomaskovic-Devey. “Again, that’s putting your money where your mouth is.”Experts say another practical way to invoke change in the workplace is to treat complaints of bias, unfairness or discrimination as managerial problems to be solved, not legal issues. 1779
More than 30 states are reporting increases in opioid related overdoses and those from other drugs during the pandemic, particularly involving fentanyl, according to the American Medical Association.The government has taken steps to curb deaths during the pandemic by allowing for more flexibility in prescribing medications for opioid use disorder and lifting other restrictions on pain medications.Meanwhile, the National Safety Council is calling on businesses to get ready for an increase in substance misuse in the workplace.“Employers not only have a responsibility, they have a call to arms here to make sure as they bring employees back to work, that they are directly addressing their mental health and providing them the resources that they need to be able to navigate,” said Lorraine Martin, President of the National Safety Council. “It’s just as important as the PPE and sanitization for hygiene that we will all need to have when we come back to work.”Martin recognizes mental health and substance misuse are often interconnected.Now, with the additional stress and unrest related to George Floyd’s death on top of COVID-19, people may be self-medicating even more.The National Safety Council put out resources and tools to help businesses help struggling employees, but they believe the most important thing leaders can do is talk about it.“The most mature companies are addressing this head on,” said Martin. “We know that substance misuse is a disease, not a decision, and if you can come at it with that attitude and make sure you create that safe space for your employees, that can make all the difference.”Not addressing substance misuse is a serious threat to worker safety and costs a lot of money in terms of productivity, absenteeism and workers compensation claims.On the other hand, employees that work through these issues with their employer often come out on the other side more loyal and productive. 1937
MILWAUKEE, Wisc. — Milwaukee County voters will be asked about legalizing marijuana this November after the County Board of Supervisors approved a referendum question on a 15-1 vote Thursday morning.The non-binding, advisory referendum on the November ballot would ask voters how they feel about approving the sale, usage and taxation of recreational marijuana.The official question, proposed by County Supervisor John F. Weishan, would ask if people approve of allowing adults 21 and older to "engage in the personal use of marijuana, while also regulating commercial marijuana-related activities, and imposing a tax on the sale of marijuana."The measure had previously passed the committee stage on a 5-0 vote.Ten?states allow recreational marijuana usage — Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Colorado, Alaska, Vermont Massachusetts and Maine, a list that doesn't include Midwestern states.According to a October 2017 Gallup poll, nearly 64 percent of American's support the legalization of marijuana--up from 50 percent in 2010.
