SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Life in San Diego is expensive. Most people would like to have more money, but they don’t always like talking about it. 10News is exploring solutions in our coverage of Making It in San Diego. The fear can grow when retirement comes closer. “You wake up and it’s already gone, and I’m in my early 60s and all of a sudden you have to plan for these things,” says Bob Bishop, who is close to retirement age. RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Not all 401Ks are equalThe SDFLC is a nonprofit group offering help to people at every stage of life, free of charge. “Planning, figuring out what it is you want to accomplish is the most important thing you can do,” says Chase Peckham, Director of Community Outreach at the SDFLC.Through programs like “Smart with your Money” and “Boost for our Heroes”, the center tailors its financial advice to the customer’s needs. RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Woman climbs out of 3,000 debt holeThe hardest part of the planning is asking for help. “We’ll hire somebody to come help us in our yard, we'll hire somebody to come fix our plumbing, so why not get help from financial experts and they see it every single day.” Experts offer one key tip to get started: pay yourself. “That way you know every single month what's leftover. You don't have to put away because you've already put away the amount you want to put away.” 1387

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Marine Corps Air Station Miramar broke ground Friday on its first hangar to house the F-35, the most advanced fighter jet in the world. While the plane may be controversial, the hope is to replace aging aircraft. The new project will also include a flightline expansion."We're building new F-35 joint strike fighters and we're going to send them right here to Miramar,” President Trump said in his visit to the base Tuesday.Congressman Scott Peters and other military leaders were in attendance at the groundbreaking, thrilled about finally moving these projects forward."We're really taking care of the nation's defense," said Rep. Peters, representing the 52nd District. "One of the things when I went to the Armed Services Committee was to make sure that this facility was high on the list of priorities," he said. Harper Construction won the bid and will employ about 2000 workers.  The 160,000 square foot hangar is designed to hold up to 12 F-35s."We need to upgrade the infrastructure, the connections, the systems inside the hangers," said Col. Jason Woodworth, the Commanding Officer at MCAS Miramar. While critics have pointed to design flaws and skyrocketing costs on the new planes, the military says aging aircraft like the F/A-18 hornets are becoming tougher to maintain."Older airplanes are like that telephone on your wall you had when you were a kid with the rotary dial on it," Woodworth said. "[The] cell phone in your pocket, that's the F-35 that does it all.""3rd Marine Aircraft Wing was more excited than anybody here," said Asst. Wing Commander Michael Borgschulte with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. The Marine Corps plans to replace its entire fleet of Harriers, Hornets, and Prowlers with new F-35s."The more flight hours, the more times our pilots can get in the aircraft an actually execute their mission, the more proficient they are," Borgschulte said. The Pentagon admits budget shortfalls have hurt military training, but it stopped short of blaming cutbacks for this week's F/A-18 crash in Florida that killed two navy pilots. The hangar should be done by January 2020, about the same time the F-35s are set to arrive. This groundbreaking kicks off just two of nine projects scheduled over the next 13 years.MCAS Miramar expects to have at least 70 F-35s by 2031. 2333

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In lieu of going door-to-door throughout the neighborhood, some parents will instead take their kids to a one-stop shop for candy and safety. On Halloween, multiple places will be running family-friendly, safety-oriented events to give parents the ability to take the kids trick-or-treating with peace of mind.So on Halloween night, consider these events for some spooky — and safe — fun!Alpine Harvest Festival — Alpine Christian Fellowship 487

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – James Prince, the owner of a recycling center in Point Loma, went to the Peninsula Community Planning Board Thursday night to try and save his business.Prince Recycling is being evicted from his location on the property of the Stump’s Family Market Place.Prince Recycling has become a controversial business in the past one or two years.  It is the only recycling center in the area, but many neighbors have started complaining that it is bringing homeless problems to the area.Dirk Stump, the owner of the grocery store, confirmed he is evicting the recycling center, ending their agreement for the past five years. The area is required to have a recycling center, and Dirk says the state could fine him more than ,000 a year for cutting ties with recycling, but at this point, he is willing to pay, because he says the center is attracting homeless and chasing away customers.  He said Mr. Prince is a good person and it was purely a business decision.“I recycle thousands of tons of material, and it’s not just from homeless,” Prince said.  “Not only that, they’re people too. What am I supposed to do? You’re homeless you can’t come in?” The planning board did not take any action on the issue. Prince says he’s not making any plans to vacate. He is getting legal help to fight the eviction. 1350

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lime can still operate its dockless scooters and bikes in San Diego, after the city's petition to revoke the company's permit was denied.Tuesday, a hearing officer reportedly refused the city's petition to revoke Lime's Shared Mobility Device (SMD) permit. The city argued that Lime violated municipal code on several occasions.“Lime is pleased with today’s decision and we appreciate the hearing officer for recognizing our compliance in San Diego. As San Diego’s longest serving operator, we value our partnership with the City and look forward to continuing to serve the community," Lime said in a statement.RELATED: City Council committee OKs changes to dockless scooter, bike lawIn August, Lime was made aware of the city's intent to revoke their SMD permit after they said the company failed to address speeding violations within the city's geofenced areas. A letter to Lime from the city's Development Services Department claimed the company had violated San Diego Municipal Code on July 13, July 14, and Aug 1.Dockless scooters and bikes are required to have a 8 mph speed restriction in high-traffic areas areas like Spanish landing and near Petco park, and as low as 3 mph along the Embarcadero and the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade."The Mayor has made it abundantly clear that operators who don’t follow rules meant to protect public safety could lose their permit and no longer do business in San Diego anymore. That’s exactly what is being done in this case," a statement from the city said.Lime argued that they were in fact in compliance, adding at the time "it is unfortunate they have chosen to move forward with this hearing" and offering to demonstrate their compliance to the city in a letter from Lime to Mayor Kevin Faulconer. After approving an initial package of rules in April, the city council is set to consider adding new regulations on dockless scooters and bicycles, including:A rider curfew from midnight to 5 a.m.;Usage of one device per government ID;A fine structure and punitive actions for companies that violate regulations;Eliminating the original ordinance's provision that allows for temporary fleet spikes during large events;Authorizing the city to reduce a company's fleet size if it poses a public safety hazard;Authorizing the city to suspend a company outright for multiple violations; andRequiring the eventual use of geofencing technology to keep riders from traversing the city's sidewalks. 2468
