With five weeks remaining in the college football season, the College Football Playoff selection committee unveiled the first poll, and there is little surprise at who is at the top. Alabama, the defending national champs, was ranked No. 1 in the poll released Tuesday, followed by the 2017 champs No. 2-ranked Clemson. With Alabama and Clemson both sporting unbeaten records, it is not surprising to see the two squads at the top of the ranking. But the selection committee's third choice might leave some fans scratching their head. Rather than picking unbeaten Notre Dame at No. 3, the selection committee slotted one-loss LSU as the third pick. Notre Dame, who has a win over Michigan who is ranked at No. 5 in the CFP ranking, was at No. 4. With the toughest part of Notre Dame's schedule in the past, and no remaining Top 25 games remaining on the schedule, the Irish's chances of making the College Football Playoff are in question given that a one-loss team is already ahead of Notre Dame. A group of other one-loss teams are poised to potentially overtake Notre Dame at the No. 4 spot since most of those squads will get the opportunity to play in a conference title game. With Notre Dame being an independent, the Irish do not get the benefit of playing in a conference championship. Behind Michigan is a quintet of teams sporting 7-1 records going into Week 9. Those teams are No. 6 Georgia, No. 7 Oklahoma, No. 8 Washington State, No. 9 Kentucky and No. 10 Ohio State. UCF, who is the only other unbeaten team besides Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame, was ranked No. 12. The top four teams at the end of the season advance to play in the College Football Playoff.  1728

With news of two highly effective COVID-19 vaccines on the horizon, health officials and scientists are giving us new insight into how we could gain herd immunity."If we think of the population as a single group of people with all similar risks and susceptibilities and behaviors, we need 60% of people to be immune, meaning that not only they don’t get sick, but also they don't pass on the virus to other people," says Dr. Stuart Ray, an infectious disease professor and herd immunity expert at Johns Hopkins University.Dr. Ray says achieving herd immunity with the help of a COVID-19 vaccine would mean enough people would either get the vaccine or already have recovered from the virus and be immune to help stop the spread of the virus."It's a little bit like this notion that if you’re going to pass on a message from a lot of people in a group, they have to speak the same language. And the more people don't speak the language, the harder it's going to be to pass that message and there’s a threshold at which the message just gets stopped," says Dr. Ray.Still, it would take a certain number of people to get the vaccine and have that immunity last in order to reach herd immunity. Stanford University's Dr. Bali Pulendran hopes that we can achieve herd immunity, even though there are a certain number of people who are still hesitant to take the vaccine."I think we should remember that a vaccine that is 95% effective is only effective if the majority of people in a population take it. If only half the population or only 60% of the population take it, then we are unlikely to have achieved the level of herd immunity that you need for curbing the disease," says Dr. Pulendran.And if the new COVID-19 vaccine requires two doses, how crucial will it be to make sure people receive that second round of immunization?Asked whether follow up will be a concern, Dr. Ray says, "I think it is a possible concern. We’re going to do a lot of learning. So, one of the things we’ve learned is that some vaccines we thought you needed multiple doses, one dose works pretty well."Doctors say research will be ongoing on the vaccine and the virus itself to ensure people will be protected as much as possible, because so many are hopeful for an end to COVID-19. 2268

When you leave the big cities and head out to lesser populated areas of the United States, you realize President-elect Joe Biden may have won but President Donald Trump still enjoys plenty of support. "Since I was 18, I voted for Democrats, every time, but this year I voted for Trump," Scott Will, a new Trump voter in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, said. "My dad, he is a Joe Biden fan. He is calling me and teasing me about," Will said jokingly. While Trump is projected to lose the 2020 election, he did set voting records. Thus far, Trump has received more than 10 million more votes than four years ago. That is more votes than any American presidential candidate in history, except Biden. CHANGING REGIONS POLITICALLY While he lost the election, Trump did improve his margins in several key areas around the country. In Kenosha County, Wisconsin, Trump did 3% better. In Miami-Dade County, Florida, Trump did `12% better. And in Mahoning County, Ohio Trump actually flipped this county for the first time since Eisenhower. For perspective, this county, which includes Youngstown, Ohio, went for the Obama/Biden ticket in 2008 by 30 points. "The funny thing here is Trump stole the Democratic message. Can the Democrats steal it back?" Paul Sracic, a political scientist at Youngstown State University, said. Sracic said in defeat, Trump's legacy maybe forever changing politically places like Youngstown. Sracic said old trade deals, like NAFTA, were particularly toxic in this part of Ohio and voters rewarded Trump for getting rid of it and promising old jobs would come back. "Trump didn’t create these voters, they were waiting for Trump," Sracic said.WILL THESE VOTERS RESPECT BIDEN? At Thanos Restaurant in Mahoning County, Ohio, diners here know how Trump changed this area's politics. Ken Morrow eats here twice a day. In 2016, he voted for Bernie Sanders. In 2020 he voted for Trump. "For me, it's confusing," Morrow said, commenting on the election results and Trump's refusal to concede. His advice to Biden? "We need a lot of good paying jobs around here, everything is gone," Morrow said. Every Trump voter we spoke with said they would respect Biden come January 20th."I am very conservative," Jean Hasey said.
