WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Visiting top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Thursday met with U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of common concern.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, was the first top Chinese legislator that has visited the United States during the past two decades.     Before meeting with Obama, Wu met U.S. Vice President Joe Biden at the White House. Wu will hold talks with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton later in the day. SHANGHAI, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Baosteel Group, China's largest steel maker, said Friday it has agreed to pay 285.6 million Australian dollars (240.7 million U.S. dollars) for a 15-percent stake in Australian miner Aquila Resources.     Baosteel will buy up to 43.95 million shares in Aquila at 6.5 Australian dollars a share.     The deal, which will make Baosteel the second-biggest shareholder in Aquila, is still to get approval from Australian and Chinese regulators.     The company executives valued the growth potential of Aquila's assets in the deal that is another major step in its overseas expansion, said a statement on Baosteel's website.     Baosteel established a joint venture with iron ore giant Rio Tinto in 2001 and Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) in 2002 to secure iron ore imports.     In a press release, Aquila said the deal was "an important transaction in Baosteel's strategy to secure long-term supply of critical steel raw materials."     The strategic cooperation will "fast-track the development of Aquila's key steel raw materials projects including iron ore, coal, and manganese," said the statement.     Baosteel would possibly make further direct investment into a number of its projects and help it get low-cost financing from China for most of its major projects, including the strategic West Pilbara Iron Ore Project, said the Aquila statement.     It added that the state-owned Chinese steel mill had agreed not to hold more than 19.99 percent of Aquila before August 2010.     Shares in Aquila surged 9.16 percent, or 60 Australian cents, to 7.15 Australian dollars Friday.

BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao called on diplomats to play a bigger role in serving the country's reform and national interests as China is seeking a stable and rapid development amid global economic downturn.     "China is at a crucial moment in dealing with the financial crisis and maintaining rapid economic development ... diplomacy must better serve the overall situation of reform, development and stability," said Hu while addressing a national meeting attended by diplomatic envoys, which ended Monday in Beijing. It should focus on the task of ensuring growth, people's life and stability," He said.     Hu urged Chinese envoys to join the global efforts for promoting economic growth, safeguard national sovereignty and security, firmly follow the one-China policy and maintain stability.     China will stick to the independent foreign policy of peace, pursue the path of peaceful development and develop friendly cooperation with all the countries in line with the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, Hu said.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao also addressed the meeting, saying "the recovery of the global economy will be a slow process with twists and turns, there must be a long-term preparedness to effectively deal with (the global downturn)".     The global financial crisis has plunged the world into deep recession, and it's difficult to say the global downturn has reached the bottom, Wen said.

URUMQI, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region would accelerate local legislation against separatism, said the region's top lawmaker on Sunday.     Eligen Imibakhi, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Xinjiang Regional People's Congress, said the regional congress would unswervingly safeguard the dignity and authority of the Constitution and other laws .     The July 5 incident involving beating, smashing, looting and burning, was a severe violent crime colluded, planned and organized by "three forces" of extremism, separatism and terrorism both at home and abroad, said the regional top legislator.     A most urgent problem to be solved was the lack of law booklets in ethnic minority languages, he said. The region had organized experts to do the translation work and the booklets would soon be distributed to farmers and herdsmen across the region, he added.
