San Diego (KGTV) - A group of concerned residents made their voices heard at the Claremont Planning group meeting Tuesday evening.Several residents made public comments expressing their concern for a proposed homeless housing development at 5858 Mt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A compromise in San Diego’s short-term rental debate may help the city get answers.In a news conference, San Diego City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell announced a compromise between “United Here,” which represents more than 6,000 local hotel, gaming, and hospitality workers, and Expedia Group, which is the parent company for short-term rental brands.Both sides have agreed on rules that Campbell said could help regulate the short-term rental industry -- by providing a balance between the hospitality industry and preserving the right of homeowners to use their property to help make ends meet.Under this agreement, it would cap the number of short-term rental permits that were granted and also establish a 2-night minimum stay.In turn, residents will be allowed to home share and those who rent out their homes part time -- usually during big events like Comic-Con, Pride, or December Nights -- wouldn’t have to pay the full permit costs.There will also be strict enforcement of the Good Neighbor Policy, which would include fines for those who violate it and possibly having permits revoked for repeat violations.This plan will be sent to the full council for further review. 1210

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A baby southern white rhino born this week at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park has monumental implications moving forward.Not only is the rhino calf the zoo's first successful rhino birth via artificial insemination, it's the first successful in North America for the rhino species.The calf, named Edward, was born Sunday at the zoo's Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center. Edward's birth now represents the potential to bring back the rhino's relative, the northern white rhino, from the brink of extinction.RELATED: San Diego Zoo to be featured in new reality television series on Animal Planet"Not only are we thankful for a healthy calf, but this birth is significant, as it also represents a critical step in our effort to save the northern white rhino from the brink of extinction," Barbara Durrant, Henshaw endowed director of Reproductive Sciences at San Diego Zoo Global, said.Researchers hope the science behind the calf's birth can lead to a successful recovery of the genetic recovery of the northern white rhino, of which only two remain on the planet. Both are females.Ultimately, researchers believe southern white rhinos could serve as surrogates for northern white rhino embryos. The process has already been successfully applied to other rhino species, according to the zoo. Durrant says Victoria is very attentive and the calf is walking around and nursing frequently.Victoria was artificially inseminated on March 22, 2018, after hormone-induced ovulation. White rhino gestation is estimated to take 485 days. She carried the calf for 493 days. The calf is the zoo's 99th southern white rhino born at the Safari Park. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A college student is suing the San Diego County Sheriff's Deputies from the Las Colinas Detention Facility after she disfigured her face while detained.The lawsuit stems from May 6, 2019. San Diego State student Tanya Suarez, 23, tried methamphetamine with a new group of friends.The document states she had psychotic delusions in a gas station parking lot, causing nearby San Diego police officers to arrest her for being under the influence of drugs.According to the lawsuit, at Las Colinas Detention Facility, while being fingerprinted, she heard another woman screaming about her eyes. That's when Suarez started to claw out her own right eye.Deputies restrained her on a gurney and cut her acrylic nails leaving them jagged.The suit claims deputies then placed her in a safety cell unrestrained. Suarez started clawing again at her right eye.She says the entire time she was screaming and saw a guard standing outside her cell filming her with an iPhone.Within five minutes she scratched both eyes out.Documents state it took another 5-10 minutes before deputies entered the cell.Suarez is now blind and, according to the lawsuit, she was known "to sleep with the lights on because she is afraid of the dark. Now she lives in complete darkness."The lawsuit states she told nurses she is bipolar and was previously hospitalized for wanting to commit suicide.Suarez's lawsuit states she is going back to finish her psychology degree at SDSU and is taking classes with the Center for the Blind; adding she wants to help others who suffer from mental illness and drug abuse.The San Diego County Sheriff's Department sent 10News the following statement: 1681

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  A San Diego man walked up to a horrifying sight:  his wife bloodied and unconscious in Balboa Park.Donna Gookin and her husband Ed were part of a group participating in orienteering last Wednesday in the early evening.  Orienteering is hiking sport that combines a compass, a map and locating markers.  The two were on separate parts of the trail.
