UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's progress in meeting a development goal on children's health can serve as an inspiration to other countries working towards the same objective, Dr. Renee Van de Weerdt, chief of maternal, newborn and child health at the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) told Xinhua in an interview Friday.Van de Weerdt said that "the example of China is very encouraging because it means it can be done, even in a very big country with a very big population."China is on track to meet the fourth Millennium Development Goal (MDG), one of the eight development targets that the international community has pledged to meet by 2015. MDG 4 requires that each country reduce its rate of mortality for children under age five to two-thirds of what it was in 1990.According to Van de Weerdt, most deaths of children under five take place in the first month of life. After the first month, the most prevalent causes of death are pneumonia and diarrhea.ACHIEVING THE GOAL WORLDWIDEThe international community has been doing "relatively well" in working towards achieving MDG 4, Van de Weerdt said.The UN Interagency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (IGME) stated in their 2011 Report on Levels and Trends in Child Mortality that the number of under-five deaths worldwide has dropped from more than 12 million in 1990 to 7.6 million in 2010."We really continue to see progress," Van de Weerdt said. "The number of children that die every year continues to drop so we are really pleased to see that progress. Unfortunately, the progress isn't sufficient to really be able to say that if we continue at this pace we would achieve MDG 4 by 2015."Some regions, according to Van de Weerdt, like Latin America and parts of Asia are making more headway towards the goal than others that are currently lagging behind.

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- China will regulate the production and sale of cosmetic colored contact lenses by including them in its list of items classified as "medical apparatus."Some people wear such non-corrective colored contacts to change or enhance eye color for cosmetic and fashion purposes.As these contacts are not for vision correction and medication purposes, they are currently off limits to the country's medical administration and regulators, said a statement published on the website of the State Food and Drug Administration on Thursday.However, with the increasingly popular use of cosmetic contacts, safety and quality problems due to the regulation loophole are likely to harm consumers' health, and the administration has decided to expand the current medical regulation on contact lenses to cover cosmetic ones, the statement said.It explained that the administration will soon issue a notice to ban the manufacture and sale of these contacts without proper registration and licenses.The statement also warned consumers of the risks of these contacts and suggested they carefully choose and use such products.

BERLIN, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- The Sino-German strategic partnership has been further intensified and expanded in the year 2011, Chinese Ambassador to Germany Wu Hongbo told Xinhua in a recent interview prior to China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin's visit to Germany.The frequent, high-level mutual visits between China and Germany have pushed forward progress of political, economic, cultural and other cooperations steadily, and strengthened the communication and coordination on key international and regional issues, he said.This year has featured frequent mutual visits between the leaders of China and Germany, as Vice Premier Li Keqiang visited Germany at the start of the year, followed by the first round of bilateral minister-level strategic dialogue between German vice-chancellor and foreign minister Guido Westerwelle and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi during Westerwelle's visit to China three months later.In June, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his German counterpart Angela Merkel co-chaired the first round of China-Germany inter-governmental consultation. Attended by more than 20 ministers from both sides for 8counterpart conversation on a wide range of topics, the consultation wound up with substantial accomplishments.It was the first time China had ever established such a high-level inter-governmental negotiation mechanism with a European Union (EU) country. BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) - Orthopaedic experts have warned that China should improve its prevention of orthopaedic illnesses as its population ages.Osteoporosis, bone fractures and joint diseases, to which elderly people are particularly susceptible, have surged as serious health concerns, said Feng Huicheng, surgeon-in-chief of a leading Chinese orthopaedics hospital, at the Sixth International Congress of the Chinese Orthopaedic Association (COA) Sunday in Beijing.According to China's latest census in 2010, the number of people aged 60 and over stood at 177.65 million and accounted for more than 13 percent of the country's total 1.3 billion population."Orthopaedic diseases pose a great threat to the elderly, and they'll only grow more serious as we have a large population that is aging," said Dr. Feng from the No. 309 Hospital of the People's Liberation Army."The younger generation should start to be concerned with their health now, particularly calcium loss, to prevent osteoporosis when getting old.".A report issued by the International Osteoporosis Foundation this year shows that about 70 million people in China now suffer from the condition and that number may leap to 286 million by 2020.H.K.T.Raza, president of the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association, said at the conference that the prevention of osteoporosis should begin when people are still young."Osteoporosis is best prevented by regular exercises and good dietary controls. All that has to be done early in life, maybe between 20 and 30, to prevent the disease," he said.According to the World Health Organization, osteoporosis remains one of the primary threats to the health of the middle-aged and elderly.Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time. Parts of the bone grow weak and prone to fracture. Women are usually subject to greater risk of osteoporosis than men as they start with lower bone density and lose bone mass faster as they age.
