SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A La Jolla hardware store is being forced to remove their popcorn machine they say was used to give the buttery treat to customers for free over the last 25 years.According to a food inspection report, the Meanley and Son Hardware on the 7700 block of Girard was investigated for serving popcorn without a permit."Everybody has had fun with this until now, but we have to obey the law," said co-owner Bob Meanley.One of the store's owners says the inspection happened after someone complained.A customer reportedly saw another person reach into the popcorn machine barehanded."I’m sorry we can’t continue with the popcorn, but we’ll do it with everything else," added Meanley.In the report, the inspector said the small Gold Medal brand popcorn maker was seen in use and with “popped popcorn prepared.”The report forces the hardware store to stop making popcorn and to remove the popcorn machine from the building.If the shop wants to give away popcorn, according to the health department, they’ll have to go through the permitting process. A process which will also legally require that the store install three compartment sinks. The store says staff regularly cleaned the machine and refilled it with popcorn throughout the day for customers to enjoy.The hardware shop has an extensive history in La Jolla. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A jury deadlocked Monday in the second trial of a former Navy commander accused of trying to rape a military colleague.The alleged victim said John Michael Neuhart II sexually assaulted her after they spent time drinking and hanging out with colleagues downtown in 2016.The woman said Neuhart took off her pants and underwear and was physically violent inside her Valencia Park home.RELATED: Mistrial declared in trial of former Navy commanderIn a cell phone video recorded by the defendant, the woman can be heard telling Neuhart to "stop" as he tries to get her to open the door about 3 a.m."I've wanted you for a while," Neuhart tells her. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A number of San Diegans who were abroad in Peru are now stranded there amid the coronavirus outbreak.On March 15, as the disease spread, the Peruvian government declared a 15-day national quarantine, eliminating travel out of the country. The U.S. government has taken the first 600 American tourists out of Peru, but the San Diegans who are still there say they still don't have concrete information on when it will be their turn. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local woman says a recent shopping trip turned into a nightmare, in the form of a sexual assault inside a 99 cent store in Clairemont.Around 7 p.m. on Thursday, inside a nearly empty 99 Cents Only store at Clairemont Town Square, Sarah was 30 minutes into a shopping trip. She recalls seeing the same man, as she walked through three different aisles."I didn't think anything of it. Just thought he was shopping for the same items," said Sarah.When Sarah bent down to get some poster board from a shelf, he attacked."He came from behind and forcefully shoved my shoulders into a seated position into his lap, and he had an erect groin," said Sarah.Sarah says she quickly got away from the man, who was fully clothed."I was shocked and gasped. Stood up and turned around, and he backed up. He said, 'Oh, sorry, I thought you were somebody I knew,'" said Sarah.Sarah describes the man as a thin, dark-haired man in his 20s, wearing a black mask and blue-and-white, checkered cap. She raced to find a store employee."I could see he was still stalking me. He was still peeking his head around the corner. When he saw me talking to an employee, he took off," said Sarah.She called the police and waited outside the front door to get a photo of him, but he never appeared. He likely got out a side door."I feel very violated. Just very violating," said Sarah.A day later, there is a growing fear and anxiety. After she posted details on the Nextdoor site, neighbors reported four recent and similar incidents at grocery and drug stores, all involving a man with a similar suspect description. Police tell us they're looking into a possible link to other cases."It's very scary he could potentially be doing this to women while they're shopping," said Sarah.Sarah is worried about what the man may do next."He's very brazen.
