CARLSBAD (KGTV) -  A new airline will begin flying from Carlsbad's McClellan Airport, trying to give North County travelers an alternative to Lindbergh Field.California Pacific Airlines will take off for the first time on Friday, with a flight to San Jose. They also have flights planned for Reno, Sacramento, Las Vegas, and Phoenix/Mesa by the end of November. The airline already offers flights from Denver to several cities in South Dakota."We’ll be flying at least 15 flights a day in the next two months," says CEO Ted Vallas. "We're getting a great reception for it."Vallas says his airline will offer competitive rates, but travelers will save money in the long run because they won't have to first drive up to an hour to Lindbergh Field or pay to park.The airline hit a snag on its first morning, however, having to postpone its inaugural flight Thursday. A mechanical problem delayed the airplane in Denver.Vallas says that's not a sign of things to come, noting that his airline will have a fleet of 15 to 25 planes stationed at all cities it serves.McClellan Airport has had problems keeping commercial travel. CAMP PENDLETON (CNS) - A man was killed on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton Saturday morning when his Chevrolet Suburban overturned, landed on the right side of the freeway and was struck by a second car.The deadly sequence of events happened a little before 3 a.m. on the northbound side of I-5 past Basilone Road, near San Onofre State Beach and not far from the Orange County line.A 25-year-old San Clemente man was behind the wheel of the Suburban when it left the road and went up an embankment before flipping over and coming to rest on the right shoulder, California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Latulippe said.Shortly afterward, a Nissan Rouge driven by a 46-year-old Tijuana man approached the wreck and struck the disabled Suburban, Latulippe said.Passing drivers stopped to assist the Suburban driver, who was found unresponsive outside his car on the right shoulder.It's unclear if he exited the SUV after the initial crash, or was thrown from it during the second collision, Latulippe said.Emergency personnel from the Camp Pendleton Fire Department headed to the crash, but the Suburban driver died at the scene, Latulippe said. The man's name was not immediately released.No information on the condition of the Rogue driver was available.Drugs and alcohol were not considered to be factors in the crash, Latulippe said.Northbound lanes of I-5 were congested through the area for about an hour after the crash while officials investigated. 1460

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Charlotte Hornets have suspended radio play-by-play broadcaster John Focke indefinitely after he used a racial slur on his Twitter account. Focke used the slur while tweeting about the Jazz-Nuggets playoff game. He has since deleted the tweet and apologized, saying it was a typo. (AP) — NASCAR has cleared Kyle Larson to return in 2021, ending his long suspension for using a racial slur while playing a video racing game. “NASCAR continues to prioritize diversity and inclusion across our sport,” the sanctioning body said in an official statement. “Kyle Larson has fulfilled the requirements set by NASCAR and has taken several voluntary measures, to better educate himself so that he can use his platform to help bridge the divide in our country," NASCAR said in a press release. "Larson’s indefinite suspension has been lifted. Under the terms of his reinstatement, he will be cleared to return to all NASCAR racing activities effective January 1, 2021.”Larson was suspended in April after he used the n-word while playing an online racing game in which viewers could follow along. (KGTV) - A brush fire broke out in a training range on Camp Pendleton Friday, creating a plume of smoke visible above North San Diego County.The fire started at 11 a.m. near the center of the base in the Basilone/San Mateo area, officials said. By 3:30 p.m., 50 acres had burned.Helicopters were deployed to drop water and fire retardant.Ground crews from Camp Pendleton and Orange County Fire also battled flames in 90-degree weather.Officials said there were no structures threatened by the fire. 529
