WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — Python hunters continue to remove invasive snakes from Florida, and they seem to be getting bigger. The Big Cypress National Preserve in Ochopee, Florida, posted on its Facebook page Friday, April 5, that hunters caught a female snake more than 17 feet long, and it weighed 140 pounds. The massive python also contained 73 developing eggs.Officials said this is the largest python ever removed from Big Cypress National Preserve and that it was caught using radio transmitters. The picture posted on Facebook shows it took four people to hold up the behemoth.Using male pythons with transmitters, it allows the hunters to track the male to find the breeding females. In this instance, it led the hunters to a record-breaking snake. Big Cypress says its team is not only removing the invasive snakes, but collecting research data, developing new removal tools and learning how the pythons are using the Preserve. The Facebook post said hunters have been able to locate and remove several breeding female pythons in the past few months. Last month, the battle against the invasive Burmese python in the Everglades reached a major milestone with the 1183

Walmart workers could soon go back to work at the El Paso store where 22 people were killed on August 3, a company spokeswoman said. The store near Cielo Vista Mall has been closed for nearly two months since a gunman opened fire in one of the deadliest attacks against Latinos in the US."Construction work on the Cielo Vista Walmart is progressing smoothly and we are currently working toward re-opening the store on Wednesday, November 6," Delia Garcia, the company's senior director of communications, said on Thursday.Garcia said employees are expected to return to the property in early October "to help prepare their store to serve the community again." About 93% of the hundreds of workers at the store were assigned to temporary jobs at multiple locations across the city following the mass shooting.Construction crews have been working to renovate the property since law enforcement returned control of the site to Walmart officials more than 10 days after the shooting. The renovation involves taking the store "down to the shell" and "basically rebuilding it," Randy Hargrove, Walmart's senior director for national media relations had said.Walmart announced last month its plans to dedicate an area of the store to honor the mass shooting victims."Our goal is to establish a memorial that honors the victims, recognizes the binational relationship between El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, and celebrates the strength of the El Paso community," Hargrove said at the time.Family suing Walmart will be allowed inside storeRepresentatives for a 1557
While beautiful spring temperatures have settled into the Plains and Midwest, folks there shouldn't get used to it. There's a storm on the way that's going to remind Midwesterners that winter's never over till it's over. The potential is there for a "bomb cyclone" to impact the Plains this week. That's an area of low pressure that drops 24 millibars in 24 hours -- aka a potent, rapidly intensifying storm system. This would be the second time in less than a month a storm of this magnitude has developed in the Plains. It's rare enough to have one form inland, much less two.Typically we see "bomb cyclones" form off the US East Coast in the form of nor'easters.Right now the forecast models have the storm teetering on the edge of bomb-cyclone criteria. Either way, this storm is forecast to unleash a variety of wild weather this week.Blizzard conditions likely for manyThis powerful storm is forecast to develop Tuesday in the Rockies, where it will rapidly intensify and bring blizzard conditions to the Plains on Wednesday.Overnight temperatures in the Plains will drop nearly 40 degrees in just 12 hours, including in Denver -- which is expecting a high of 80 degrees Tuesday and blizzard conditions by Wednesday night.Winter storm warnings and watches stretch from the Rockies to the Great Lakes. There are blizzard warnings for almost 4 million people from eastern Colorado to southwestern Minnesota. Up to 2 feet of snow will be possible with wind gusts of 45-55 mph across South Dakota and Nebraska, along with white-out conditions.A potentially historic winter stormThursday the storm will reach the Midwest, bringing with it the heavy snow and wind. A foot of snow is possible for places like Minneapolis, where forecasters are calling for "a potentially historic winter storm."Winds will gust up to 45mph.While an April snowstorm seems like a punch in the gut, April snowstorms do happen. 1914
