SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University Saturday ordered all on-campus residents to stay at home over Labor Day Weekend amid an increase of coronavirus cases tied to the university. The university sent an email to students who live on campus, advising them to stay “in their current residences except for essential needs.”The “Stay at Home” order is in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday, September 5, through Tuesday, September 8 at 6 a.m.RELATED: San Diego State University reports 120 more COVID-19 cases since fall start“At that time, this order will be revisited and updated as necessary,” the university said of the order’s expected expiration.“Violations of this order may result in disciplinary consequences,” the school continued, although no specificities were given as to the consequences for violating the order. The announcement comes as the university has, so far, experienced 184 confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases since the start of the fall semester. 978

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students are demanding Gov. Gavin Newsom sign a bill that would require high school students across California to take an ethnic studies class to graduate."My parents are both first-generation immigrants, they came from Hunan, which is where all the spicy food from China is from," Alvin Lee, 17, said chuckling.Lee is a first-generation American and as a high school senior, sees flaws in our education system."Christopher Columbus is the savior, right all these white figures are the saviors but they don't talk about what Asian Americans, African Americans, what Hispanic Americans and Native Americans did to build America," Lee said emphatically. "We don't learn about this lived history and I think it's very destructive. I think it almost erases some of our identity."Lee said it also leaves minorities feeling powerless. He is a co-founder of GENup, a youth organization committed to changing our nation's schools by giving students more of a voice in their education. That is why he supports AB 331."AB 331 would ease in eventual graduation requirement for high-schoolers in California that they take an ethnic studies course. Now it will be localized, it will be up to the school district and up to the individual schools about what that course looks like," Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-80, said.Gonzalez said this gives each public and charter school the opportunity to tailor the class to their students. "When you have 70% of the population are Latino and probably about 90% of schoolchildren are Latino, Mexican immigrants, in particular Mexican American and Mexican immigrants. Well, it might make sense to teach about Mexican American history in California," said Gonzalez, who co-authored AB 331. She says she's been pushing to get the issue to the governor's desk for 18 years."Having that validation and being able to learn about the historical context of different race and ethnic roots in California is really essential and we think the outcomes will actually show that kids are going to be less likely to drop out, they're going to be more likely to graduate and they're going to do better in school," she said.Lee hopes the bill is passed and creates more empathy and compassion."I really want to see a much more inter-sectionalized community where we all really understand each other's cultures, histories, and identities much better," said Lee.Newsom has until Sept. 30 to sign or veto the bill. It was presented to him Monday. If the bill sits on his desk with no action, it will become a law once the deadline passes. If the bill passes, California high schools and charter schools must offer the class by the 2025-2026 school year.Gonzalez said schools can phase in curriculum sooner. This comes one month after a bill was passed requiring California State University undergraduates to take an ethnic studies course to graduate.Gonzalez said we need to integrate ethnic studies from day one of school. 2957

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday, Dec. 8 will be the tenth year since a tragedy in the heart of University City.Four people died in 2008 when an FA-18 military jet crashed into homes in the San Diego community west of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.Rebecca Cosford was in her home and heard two loud noises. The first was the pilot blowing out the plane’s canopy and ejecting. The second sound was the crash.“One was popping, then a massive explosion that shook the whole house,” Cosford remembers.Cosford and her husband ran outside to see a “large column of smoke”.Teresa Rizzo not only heard it: she felt it. Someone yelled at her to stay back and told her a plane had crashed."I just thought, 'That was an airplane?’ That was an actual airplane that fell out of the sky and exploded around the corner from my house?"Marine pilot Dan Neubauer’s parachute landed a block west of the crash site after he ejected. He had been trying to reach MCAS Miramar on one engine, but his second engine failed. The FA-18 dropped like a stone. The four lives lost on the ground were Dong Yoon’s family."I believe my wife and two babies and my mother-in-law are in heaven with God," Yoon said after the crash.Neighbors had tried to help when disaster struck. Alain Blanc had a cell phone in one hand, 911 on the line. His other hand was holding a hose as firefighters arrived."There are moments we don't have time to be scared, you react! I heard this incredible bang, the earth shook, and I was outside. How I got there, don't ask me," said Blanc.Today, two new homes stand where the other two were destroyed. One thing is the same: the sound of roaring jets."Not that far but when they're close, when it's the same elements as it was that day: overcast, the middle of the day, cool temperatures and a plane flies really close by, my heart still races."Many neighbors told 10News they plan to attend a memorial which will be held Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. at University Village Park. 1982

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University canceled spring break 2021 on Tuesday night, citing concerns of rising COVID-19 cases. Instead of the traditional nine day break, students will get four "rest and recovery days" scattered throughout the semester. The days will create multiple long weekends for students and faculty. The decision was made during a University Senate meeting. The vote was 44 to 28. The school senate is made up of faculty, staff and student representatives. Within hours of the decision, an online petition gained thousands of signatures from students asking for the school to bring back spring break. In a lengthy email sent to the entire campus, school officials explained the decision was made in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19,citing health and safety as the schools top priority. Officials say the rest and recovery days are for no instruction, assignments, deadlines or exams. Students argued that the rest and recovery days are not enough to give them a mental break from school, many arguing that it was best to have the longer, 9-day break instead.Read the full email from SDSU official below: 1151
