SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Across San Diego County, cities will soon raise and illuminate that all-important sign of Christmas.Tree lighting ceremonies kick off this month, with several planned for residents no matter where in the county they live. Many of this year's tree lighting events will celebrate with holiday treats, shopping, rides and games, and, of course, appearances by Santa.Check out where you can catch a tree lighting ceremony in San Diego this season:Otay Ranch Town Center Tree Lighting (Nov. 19): The South Bay will usher in the holidays at Otay Ranch Town Center, where their Christmas tree will light up at 7 p.m. Festivities, crafts, and delicious treats will be available starting at 5 p.m. and Santa will pay everyone a visit at the shops.Santee Holiday Tree Lighting (Nov. 22): Santee starts the holiday season with crafts and games, carriage rides, photos with Santa, sledding, and more at Santee Trolley Square. Then at 6:30 p.m., the crowd will gather as the square's tree comes to life.Liberty Station Tree Lighting (Nov. 29): The holiday fun gets started at 5 p.m. in Liberty Station before the district's 88-foot tree is switched on by a patient family of Rady Children's Hospital. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After losing her husband and her son to a rare form of cancer, a local mom is doing her part to bring awareness to the disease. She teamed up with her family’s medical care team to come up with a step challenge.“I’m a mother on a mission to find and fund a cure for this disease,” says Debra Melikian.She lost her son Merak in February. He was diagnosed with a rare form of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor, also known as GIST.“He was so strong, he was so brave and determined to live life on his own terms,” says Melikian. “Merak never let cancer define him.”Melikian says the cancer is hereditary. She lost her husband to the cancer months prior.“I have lost my entire immediate family in a mere two-plus years. I do not want any other family to have to go through the despair and destruction that this cancer brings.”When not tending to patients, the care team at UCSD, who treated Merak and his father, would often participate in fun challenges, like Tough Mudder. Nurse Maura Caffrey says after Merak’s death, they wanted to do something to honor him and bring awareness to GIST.The team came up with a step challenge.“Whether you do Zumba, yoga, or hiking, you can do any type of activity,” says Caffrey. “It’s sort of a movement challenge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman's trip to Mission Bay ended with her, and her car, soaked.The woman, who identified herself as Candy, said she was next to her car on a boat ramp preparing to unload her kayak for a day of fishing and roaming around Mission Bay. Suddenly, her 2002 Audi convertible started rolling as she was unloading gear.Candy jumped into the car and road it into the bay as she tried to get her emergency brake to engage."It just wouldn't. It just kept on going," Candy told 10News. "I was standing straight up in it as it was going down ... quite a scene, I'm sure."The car started sinking into the bay with Candy still inside, before she jumped out to swim back to shore. Her lunch and kayak floated to the other side of the bay as her car became completely submerged, she told 10News."I'm going to have plenty of fish now," she joked. "It's not a big deal, things happen."Two tow trucks were able to fish Candy's vehicle out of the bay and San Diego Lifeguards retrieved her car and kayak, in which she had left her purse and lunch.Candy said she had just purchased the car in November.San Diego Lifeguards reminded locals to exercise caution while using boat ramps. 1216

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A winter storm warning has been issued for the mountains in San Diego County ahead of a strong winter storm expected to move in Monday night.The winter storm warning goes into effect from 7 p.m. Monday to 10 p.m. Tuesday.Snow accumulations are expected to be anywhere between six to 12 inches with difficult travel conditions expected, warned the National Weather Service.More than a foot of snow is expected above 6000 feet with accumulation between 4000 and 6000 feet expected to be four to eight inches and accumulations between 3000 to 4000 feet expected to be between two and four inches.The National Weather Service also said snow is expected to fall to 2000 to 2500 feet Tuesday.  RELATED: Ski Reports | Today's Forecast | Traffic conditions | Strong winds, light snow hit Laguna Mountains In addition to heavy snow, winds could top out at 50 miles per hour.The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department says mountain residents should be prepared for crowds as families from low-lying areas travel to snow-packed mountains.Area businesses also say they typically see an influx in visitors during snowy periods.An employee with the Julian Lodge Bed and Breakfast says visitors usually come from San Diego, North County, Los Angeles and that the lodge has even hosted visitors from as far away as China and Japan.In San Diego, 280 beds are being made available downtown as cold winter temperatures are set to swiftly fall over the county after sunset.Father Joe’s Village will house 250 people at its building on 1501 Imperial Avenue. Check-ins will also be made available throughout the night with meals also being provided.As many as 30 others will be sheltered at the PATH San Diego/Connections Housing Shelter at 1250 Sixth Avenue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An 86-year-old man was killed crossing the street in Mira Mesa Thursday night, police say. According to San Diego Police, the crash occurred on Mira Mesa Boulevard and Aderman Avenue just before 7 p.m. Thursday. Police say the man was using a crosswalk against a red light when he was struck by a 52-year-old woman driving a 2009 Lexus sedan. The man died at the scene and the driver, who police say stayed at the scene, was uninjured. Drugs or alcohol aren’t suspected in the crash. 512
