ORIENTAL, N.C. – A Navy veteran says his Chihuahua mix saved his life.Rudy Armstrong was on his houseboat in Oriental, North Carolina, when he suffered a stroke, according to CarolinaEast Health System.Luckily, Armstrong’s dog, Bubu, was there and sprang into action.“He and Bubu have a special bond and when Rudy couldn’t get to his phone to call for help, he looked his little friend in the eyes and said ‘I need help. Go get Kim,’” wrote the hospital in a Facebook post.Immediately, the hospital says Bubu ran off to get Kim, the area dockmaster, who called 911. They ultimately saved Armstrong’s life, with the help of paramedics and the staff at the hospital.On Aug. 7, the hospital says it was able to orchestrate a reunion between the veteran and “his best girl.” It was an emotional moment for everyone there. Armstrong, who has reportedly sailed all over the world and “has stories for days,” said he was very appreciative of the care he received at the hospital. 980

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A state-wide program to help community college students transfer to 4-year schools has found increased success at Mira Costa College.The Puente Program helps educationally disadvantaged students navigate the complicated process of applying to 4-year schools, while also bringing them up to speed with other students who start their college careers at universities."They would transfer, but they were not ready," says Mira Costa Puente Counseling Coordinator Sinar Lomeli. "They didn't have the reading or writing comprehension skills. So they couldn't compete with students who were already there."The Puente Program began in 1981 at Chabot College in Hayward. It's now in 64 community colleges around the state. The students take two semesters of English reading and writing classes, and also get mentoring and counseling to guide them towards a 4-year degree."When I got to school, I was like a dog chasing a car," says Mira Costa Sophomore Manny Ramirez. "Getting into the Puente program gave me a sense of belonging. I could say I belong at college, and I can do whatever I set my mind to."Mira Costa's Puente Program is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2019. This year they're expanding to let current Puente students volunteer at elementary schools around Oceanside and Vista. That helps them get public service hours they can put on a college application. It also helps inspire the next generation to see college as a possibility."It gives us hope that we're leaving behind something for them to build on," says Ramirez.Results of the Puente Program have been well documented. Between 2013 and 2016, Puente student enrollment at UC schools has increased by 59%. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Since 1975, the Oceanside Senior Citizens Association has been serving hot meals to North County seniors in need. Due to financial hardships, that will end after Dec. 28."Our program has skyrocketed, we have a lot of seniors that are below poverty level, they have no family, they have no finances," Executive Director Sylvia Spears said. "Our meal is sometimes the only meal they get for the day and we ask for a donation only, we never turn anybody down if they can’t make a donation."Spears says the program is funded by senior donations, the county, and grants. However, she says senior donations have dropped 75 percent and they now have more clients than ever. Spears says the nonprofit asked the City of Oceanside for help, requesting an additional ,000 a month. The city could only offer half of that."I had to realize that we just couldn’t go on anymore and that’s hard because I know what these meals mean to these seniors," said Spears. Despite the nonprofit shutting down, the city says it’s committed to ensuring there’s no gap in services."Those who’ve been participating in the nutrition program will continue to have access to that here at the Senior Center as well as within their homes if they choose to do so," said Mark Olson, Parks and Recreation Division manager for Oceanside.Olson says they are working closely with the county to bring in another meal provider. 1423
