SAN DIEGO — Some parents are keeping their children out of school Tuesday to protest the San Diego Unified School District’s sex education curriculum.A group of parents say the district’s Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP) is too graphic and not age-appropriate for their students, and they are urging district officials to eliminate the program.The parents have taken their concerns to the district’s School Board, but they said board members refuse to replace the curriculum.District officials said students can opt out of the course, but parents want the images they consider graphic gone.Ashley Bever, a substitute teacher who is organizing the one-day protest, said she was surprised to see all of the materials student had access to.“I thought a 6th grade teacher did not write this. Where it did come from? Why is it so explicit? SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Utah Amber Alert has been activated for a 6-year-old boy who was abducted Saturday night.Investigators are looking for Terran Alexander Butler and his mother, 43-year-old Emily Jolley.Terran is Caucasian, 4 feet tall, 40 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing black gym shorts, hiking boots, and a green t-shirt with blue sleeves.Jolley is 5 feet 8 inches tall, 140 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. In a news conference, Newsom said he directed all bars, nightclubs, wineries and brew pubs to close to help stop the spread of the virus. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A coalition of regional partners joined together Thursday to announce the San Diego County Childcare Provider Grant Program, an initiative that will distribute million in coronavirus relief funding to childcare providers impacted by COVID-19.The coalition, which includes the County of San Diego, The San Diego Foundation, Child Development Associates and YMCA of San Diego County, will open the application period Monday. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to distribute million of Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act funding to eligible childcare providers in San Diego County."The childcare sector is very important, as our economy cannot be sustainable if parents do not have safe places for their children to be cared for and educated while they are working," said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, co- chair of the county's COVID-19 subcommittee. "This new million grant program will help childcare providers make their centers safe during the coronavirus pandemic and allow them to remain open so parents can return to work."Funding will be allocated based on predetermined categories outlined in the CARES Act agreement. Large family childcare providers -- licensed to care for a maximum of 14 children -- will be eligible to receive up to ,500 and small family childcare providers -- licensed to care for a maximum of eight children -- will be eligible for up to ,750. Non-government-contracted licensed providers will be eligible to receive up to 5 per child capacity, based on childcare license.Partially-funded government-contracted licensed childcare centers such as HeadStart will be eligible to receive up to 5 per non-subsidized child, not to exceed license capacity. SAN DIEGO — It appears the Congressional seat vacated by Republican Duncan Hunter will remain in Republican hands, according a new scientific poll.The ABC-10 Union-Tribune scientific poll shows Republican Darrell Issa leading Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar 51 percent to 40 percent, with 9 percent undecided. The poll, released Tuesday, has a margin of error of 5.7 points. It comes after the two prior polls showed the candidates in a virtual tie for the 50th Congressional District, which comprises most of East County and stretches into southern Riverside County. The shift came because independents moved to support Issa. Last month, the poll showed Campa-Najjar leading Issa in independents by 13 points. Tuesday's poll showed a major swing, with Issa leading among independents by 14 points. That's a 27-point swing. "In the end, independents in red-leaning area tend to be more red leaning, vice versa for blue-leaning areas, and so it's not surprising that Darrell Issa, as we get closer to the election, is bringing home these independents out in East County, San Diego," said Thad Kousser, political scientist at UC San Diego.The 50th District is the county's last in which Republicans outnumber Democrats in registration, giving Issa the advantage.In an interview Tuesday, Issa said he was traveling the district from Temecula to Jamul, meeting voters with social distancing.
