SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Underwater robots showcased difficult tasks and the teams in charge of the technology are hoping to take the crown for the 21st International Robosub Competition in Point Loma.A total of 47 teams from 10 different countries came together with one mission, navigate their robots through a tricky underwater course."We have mechanical, electrical, and computer science, and it's all coming together to make one cohesive vehicle,” said David Garcia, one of the team members from Cal State.Students were able to check out each other’s models to learn what sinks and what swims. For those who think the competition is all fun and games, meet Chinoros Nakthewan from Kasetsart University in Bangkok.His team was part of the Thai cave rescue effort. At the time, they determined that his robot wouldn’t be able to reach the survivors, so they resorted to using their other equipment."We made a decision to bring sonar and drone to observe the high level of the cave,” said Nakthewan. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station are looking for a woman, possibly pregnant, accused of using counterfeit bills at several businesses in North County.According to investigators, on April 14, 2018, a woman used a counterfeit 0 bill at Yogurt 101 located at 152 N. Highway 101 in Solana Beach.Investigators said on April 19, 2018, the same female suspect used another counterfeit 0 bill at Sun Splash located at 2673 Via De La Valle in Del Mar. They also said the woman is believed to have used a counterfeit 0 bill at a business in Carlsbad.The suspect is described as a 25 to 35-year-old Hispanic woman who stands between 5’4” and 5’6” tall. She has long, dark wavy hair and a tattoo on the right side of her upper chest. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When the Chargers bolted north to the Los Angeles area, not only did they vacate what’s now known as SDCCU stadium, they also emptied out of their facility off Murphy Canyon Road.Formerly known as Chargers Park, the facility belongs to the City of San Diego. Team 10 discovered even though the site is vacant, the utility and maintenance bills continue to pile up.According to data analyzed by Team 10, the electric bill for August 2018 was ,949.78. The most recent water and wastewater bill from the end of June to the end of July 2018 shows a balance of more than ,000 and a year's worth of landscaping, maintenance, and fire safety repairs ran ,067.12.A city spokesperson said any vacant building still has operating and utility costs.“This is not a way to maximize taxpayer dollars,” said San Diego Councilmember David Alvarez, who saw the bills Team 10 received through a public information request.In 2017, Alvarez and Councilmember Lorie Zapf backed a plan that would have transformed the facility into a temporary homeless shelter. It didn’t happen.“We have a poor record and a history of not being able to use our real estate assets in a good way,” Alvarez said.Team 10 started looking into the operating costs after seeing a video posted to YouTube of people touring the facility.The guys from “The Somethin’ or Other Tour” took a peek around the building. The team of brothers explores new locations each week as part of their online content company.In their video, the lights inside the building appeared to be on, and the sprinklers were running.In one portion of the video you can hear one of the hosts saying, “The Chargers should have stayed in San Diego, that’s what we believe, and we’re sticking to that.”According to the city, the facility has been used off and on since the Chargers left.The San Diego Police Department occupied it Sept. 11, 2017 through Oct. 31, 2017, along with Jan. 31, 2018 and Feb. 19, 2018.San Diego State University also held a brief tenancy between Feb. 28, 2018 and March 14, 2018.The utility bills analyzed by Team 10 are noticeably higher when the facility is being used.A city spokesperson denied Team 10’s request for an on-camera interview about the costs and stated no one was available.They did email a response to our request: 2326

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two fires sparked Saturday afternoon in East County, in addition to a thunderstorm in Pine Valley, created dicey conditions for firefighters.Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said the humidity made a huge difference, "the monsoonal moisture the stickiness has been good because it's helped keep our fires small," slowing the spread of flames.The Bratton Fire sparked in Lawson Valley around 1:30 p.m. and scorched 4 acres. Then around 2:10 p.m., the Sloane Fire started burning in Dehesa, blackening 18 acres.Both were knocked down quickly."We hope that people don't get complacent that we've hit these fires very aggressively and it's worked out," Shoots said.He said if we didn't have the humidity we would be in trouble, "there's a lot of fuel that comes with a good winter so that grass crop is all cured out and ready to burn."Shoots said they were keeping their eye on the thunderstorm in Pine Valley.The National Weather Service reported a severe thunderstorm warning with quarter-sized hail and gusts up to 60 miles per hour."We knew it wasn't going to be to the extent that the north saw when the storms rolled through but it was still definitely a potential concern," Shoots said.Looking forward, Shoots says we need to be very careful, "San Diego and a good chunk of California is sitting at a higher potential for wildfire activity in October-November."He advises creating defensible space around your home not only to protect your home but protect your family if you can't escape in time.Shoots said he hopes firefighters are able to get a handle on the fires in Northern California and stay safe.He said 96% of all Cal Fire engines are working, which shows how extreme this fire season is.More than half of Cal Fire San Diego's resources have been sent up north to help, including 32 engines. Shoots says local fire departments are stepping up to help in their absence. 1907

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Workers around San Diego make more than the national average, according to a new U.S. Bureau or Labor Statistics report. The report shows that San Diegans make roughly .93 per hour, 12 percent more than the national average of .98. Management jobs paid the highest, with an average of just over per hour, followed by legal occupations at .43.
