White House counsel Don McGahn's final day at the White House was Wednesday, sources say.A White House official and a source with knowledge of the matter confirmed his departure to CNN.McGahn has been planning to leave the White House, but a source told CNN his departure was expedited after President Donald Trump said Tuesday he had selected Patrick Cipollone as his successor.A source said McGahn had a 20-minute farewell meeting with Trump Wednesday. But in this case McGahn was tired of the President and the President was tired of McGahn."McGahn leaves his post after serving as White House counsel through the tumultuous first 18 months of Trump's presidency, steering the White House's handling of the Russia investigation and responding internally to the President's mercurial moods as the investigation ballooned.His departure is another one from the handful of top aides who worked on the Trump campaign before joining the White House. McGahn served as the Trump campaign's top attorney throughout the GOP primary and 2016 presidential election, becoming a trusted adviser to the future President in the process.But McGahn immediately faced controversy in his earliest days at the White House, beginning with acting Attorney General Sally Yates' warning to McGahn that then-national security adviser Michael Flynn could be blackmailed by Russia and that he had likely lied to Vice President Mike Pence. Flynn was forced to resign after reports revealed Yates' warning to McGahn about Flynn's conduct.As the Justice Department and congressional investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 election heated up, McGahn found himself increasingly at the center of Trump's and the White House's response to the investigation.And when Attorney General Jeff Sessions faced pressure to recuse himself, Trump enlisted McGahn to urge Sessions not to take that step. Sessions eventually did recuse himself, giving his deputy, Rod Rosenstein, the ultimate authority to appoint a special counsel.McGahn threatened to resign in the summer of 2017 after Trump ordered him to fire Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia's election meddling and questions of obstruction of justice.For McGahn, the President's order to fire Mueller was a bridge too far -- with the White House counsel refusing to follow through on the order, a person familiar with the matter told CNN. When legendary singer Aretha Franklin died, she did not have a will or trust. Her four sons have filed a document listing themselves as interested parties, reports say.Franklin died last week from advanced pancreatic cancer. It said under Michigan law, if an unmarried person dies without a will, his or her assets are divided equally among any children.Franklin's lawyer has represented her in entertainment matters for nearly three decades, and told the paper that he constantly asked her to do a trust, but she never got around to it."I was after her for a number of years to do a trust," Los Angeles attorney Don Wilson told the paper. "It would have expedited things and kept them out of probate and kept things private."Wilson is Franklin's attorney in copyright matters, song publishing and record deals, and will be consulted on estate planning purposes. He said while he doesn't have a dollar figure on the value of her assets, the lack of a will means the finances will become public in Oakland County Probate Court."I just hope (Franklin's estate) doesn't end up getting so hotly contested," Wilson said. WHERE DO ADVOCATES WANT THE MONEY TO GO?In short, leaders in the Black Lives Matter movement want the money currently allocated to police to be re-invested in communities instead. That could take the shape of city development in an often forgotten part of town or in mental health awareness campaigns. Homeless outreach and improved educational opportunities have also been mentioned. NPR recently profiled an effort in Eugene, Oregon, that dispatches social workers to certain emergency calls instead of officers. Advocates support measures like that as well. WILL CRIME INCREASE?You can't have a discussion on defunding police without exploring the possibility that crime could increase. But there is evidence that crime can actually go down with fewer police officers. A 2017 study found that when NYPD reduced its proactive policing polices in 2015 and 20`14, the number of criminal complaints filed actually decreased in New York City. The Fraternal Order of Police though disagrees. Sgt. Robert Pride, who met with President Trump at the White House this week, said he believes more officers would want to leave law enforcement if major programs were defunded. The Hubble Telescope captured a unique sight as two galaxies are in the process of merging.NASA says the galaxy, called NGC 1614, is about 200 million light-years from Earth and is the result of a “galactic merger” which has created a unique appearance. They call it “eccentrically shaped” and “ablaze with activity” in a statement on NASA’s website. It sits in the constellation of Eridanus.The result of the cosmic collision is a flow of interstellar gas from the smaller galaxy into the nucleus of the larger one, “resulting in a burst of star formation that started in the core and has slowly spread outward through the galaxy,” NASA says.Astronomers say NGC 1614 is one of the most luminous objects in the local universe. 780
