BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Li Keqiang has said China would advance practical cooperation with the European Union (EU) in all areas.Li made the remarks Friday when meeting with a delegation from the European People's Party and European Democrats (EPP-ED), which is the largest group in the European Parliament.China hopes the two sides work together to expand common interests, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, so as to promote the China-EU relationship in a maturer and more steady way, Li said during the meeting.Since the two sides forged diplomatic ties 35 years ago, China and the EU had scored leap-forward development in bilateral relationship, which was exerting more and more influence to the world peace and development, Li said.Noting inter-party contacts constitute an important part of China-EU relations, Li, also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said the CPC is willing to deepen dialogue and exchanges with the EPP-ED.Joseph Daul, chairman of the EPP-ED and also head of the delegation, said he is willing to cement inter-party exchanges with the CPC and push forward the EU-China relations.

BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Thursday lauded traditional friendship and agreed to step up cooperation between the two countries and two armed forces to a higher level."China and the DPRK have respected and helped each other for years," said Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie, citing consolidated and deepened cooperation and precious friendship between the two countries.Liang made the remarks in his meeting with a visiting DPRK military delegation led by Vice Minister of DPRK People's Armed Forces Pyon In Son.Both China and the DPRK are facing tasks of promoting their own development, and safeguarding common interests and the regional peace and stability, Liang said.China would like to work with the DPRK to strengthen exchanges and enhance coordination for the further development of relations between the two countries and two militaries, Liang added.Pyon told Liang that the DPRK side wishes to further its friendly cooperation with China in various fields and lauded the friendship created by the old generations of leaders of both countries.Pyon said his delegation had witnessed achievements China has made in its socialist construction and military development during the trip. The delegation, invited by Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), will also pay a visit to southwest China's Yunnan Province.

BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- One of China's top banking regulators has called upon the nation's commercial lenders to improve their balance sheets and reduce excessive reliance on lending for profits.Wang Zhaoxing, deputy chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission(CBRC), said banks should not seek excessive profits from a rapid increase in loans and a widening gap between lending and deposit rates, which is unsustainable.Chinese banks went on a lending spree in 2009 in response to the urging of the government as part of the 4-trillion-yuan (601 billion U.S. dollars) stimulus package to ward off the effects of the global financial crisis. Also, nearly 9.6 trillion yuan in new loans last year fuelled fears of banks distributing bad loans. Many banks continue to depend upon issuing credit to government-backed projects to secure profits, Wang said at an industry meeting Thursday. However, those projects often lack adequate risk management.Further, Wang urged lenders to improve balance sheets and the quality of assets, as well as the ability to manage risk aversion.Chinese banking and financial institutions reported net profits of 668.4 billion yuan last year, of which a lion's share came from the gap between deposit and lending rates, investment proceeds and fees, according to the report on China's banking industry issued by the CBRC in July. The report noted that the average capital adequacy ratio stood at 11.4 percent at the end of last year, above the international safety line, while the non-performing loan (NPL) ratio fell to 1.58 percent, down 0.84 percentage points from the level at the beginning of 2009.Despite the improved data, CBRC chairman Liu Mingkang has repeated warnings that an NPL rebound could bring with it risks from lending to local government financing platforms and the property sector which has accumulated asset bubbles. At the meeting, Wang said the CBRC would enhance oversight to assure unscrupulous and unhealthy financial institutions are phased out of the market. Also, China will gradually move towards a market-driven interest rate mechanism, which would ultimately squeeze bank profits.

ATHENS, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday pledged to support a stable euro and strengthen cooperation with the European Union (EU)."China will not reduce its euro-bond holdings and China supports a stable euro," Wen said during a speech at the Greek parliament.China and the EU have signed a string of important trade investment contracts to help Europe overcome its financial difficulties, said Wen who arrived in Athens on Saturday on a three-day official visit.Since the outbreak of the global financial crisis, Chinese leaders have visited Europe several times and had frequent meetings with EU leaders, noted the Chinese premier. That, he said, shows Beijing attaches great importance to China-EU relations and "wants to join you in a concerted effort to tide over difficulties."After some European countries suffered sovereign debt crisis earlier this year, Wen said, his government announced many times that Beijing firmly supports the measures adopted by the EU and the International Monetary Fund."China is sincere in enhancing cooperation with Europe and we are confident about the prospects of our cooperation," Wen said. Thanks to joint efforts, China-EU trade has already exceeded the pre-crisis level, he said."China is committed to advancing China-EU relations. This is not an expediency, but a long-term strategic policy," Wen said.
