SAN MARCOS, Calif (KGTV) - A North County military veteran and Cal State San Marcos student is spearheading an effort to expand a veterans remembrance wall in San Marcos. The wall stands at Helen Bougher Memorial Park, and it was funded and put up by a veterans group in 2009, but spots filled-up close after about two years. The open spaces left on the wall now are reserved for POWs and those KIA or MIA. "Unfortunately, I was the one that had to tell all the veterans and their families that there was no room left on the wall, which was unacceptable," said Heidi Rassat, a co-founder for the remembrance wall. Jason Beyer said he believes he was the last to purchase a tile before requests were capped. Now, the ex-Marine is on a mission to add more spaces to the wall. "I think about my co-workers who have passed away, and doing this project keeps their memory alive for me," Beyer said, adding veterans should have the opportunity to be remembered. "They should have this space for their loved ones to remember them, to remember their service, remember their sacrifice," he said. Beyer started a group called the San Marcos Veterans Memorial Initiative. Beyer is also a student at CSU San Marcos, and he has gotten art students involved in designing a way to free up or add spaces to the existing wall. They hope to give design concepts to the city and hopefully begin fundraising next year. "The City of San Marcos is proud to honor our veterans, and we look forward to considering potential proposals for enhancing the memorial," said City Manager Jack Griffin. You may not have heard of Inspire Brands, but chances are you've eaten a meal at one of its franchises.The owner of Sonic Drive-In, Arby's and Buffalo Wild Wings is making another addition to its growing restaurant empire: sandwich chain Jimmy John's.Inspire said the acquisition of Jimmy John's will make it the fourth-largest US restaurant company, with more than billion in annual sales across 11,200 restaurants. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed."Jimmy John's is a great fit for the Inspire family," said Paul Brown, Inspire's co-founder and CEO. "What started in 1983 as a sandwich shop in a converted garage in Charleston, Illinois, has grown into a national, differentiated brand with a passionate fanbase."The company acquired hamburger joint Sonic last year for .3 billion.Inspire Brands, a private equity-backed firm that also owns Rusty Taco, said the agreement was unanimously approved by the Jimmy John's board of directors, including founder and chairman Jimmy John Liautaud.At the close of the purchase, which is expected by the end of October, James North will serve as president of the Jimmy John's brand, and Liautaud will step down as chairman and transition to an adviser role.Jimmy John's, which has more than 2,800 locations in 43 states, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 1357
(AP) - There was a loud bang, and suddenly the Southwest Airlines jet rolled sharply to the left. Smoke began to fill the cabin, and flight attendants rushed row by row to make sure all passengers could get oxygen from their masks.When flight attendant Rachel Fernheimer got to row 14, she saw a woman strapped in her lap belt but with her head, torso and arm hanging out a broken window.Fernheimer grabbed one of the woman's legs while flight attendant Seanique Mallory grabbed her lower body. They described being unable to bring the woman back in the plane until two male passengers stepped in to help.The harrowing details from the April 17 fatal flight were released for the first time as the National Transportation Safety Board began a hearing Wednesday into the engine failure on Southwest Flight 1380, which carried 144 passengers and five crew members.The flight attendants told investigators at least one of the male passengers put his arm out of the window and wrapped it around the woman's shoulder to help pull her back in. Fernheimer said when she looked out the window, she could see that one of the plane's engines was shattered, and there was blood on the outside of the aircraft.Flight attendants asked for medical volunteers. A paramedic laid the woman across a row of seats and began chest compressions. They tried a defibrillator but it indicated that there was no shock. The paramedic and a nurse took turns at CPR.Passengers asked if they were going to die. Fernheimer said she squeezed their hands. "She told them that they were going to make it," an investigator wrote.Pilots Tammie Jo Shults and Darren Ellisor landed the crippled Boeing 737 in Philadelphia. The passenger in the window seat, Jennifer Riordan, was fatally injured — the first death on a U.S. airline flight since 2009. Eight other passengers including at least one of the men who helped pull Riordan back in the window.Wednesday's hearing in Washington focused on design and inspection of fan blades on the engine, made by CFM International, a joint venture of General Electric and France's Safran S.A.An official from CFM defended the design and testing of fan blades like the one that snapped on the Southwest plane as it flew high above Pennsylvania, triggering an engine breakup that flung debris like shrapnel into the plane.After the fatal accident, CFM recommended the use of frequent and more sophisticated tests using ultrasound or electrical currents.Another Southwest jet had suffered a similar blade-related engine breakup in 2016 over Florida.CFM and federal regulators considered the Florida incident an aberration."We determined early that we would require some corrective action in that it was an unsafe condition," an FAA expert on engines, Christopher Spinney, testified on Wednesday, "but we also determined we had some time."Rather than order immediate inspections of fan blades after the 2016 incident, the FAA began a slower process for drafting a regulation and getting public comment before enacting it. That process was still underway when the fatal accident occurred nearly two years later.Since the deadly flight, widespread inspections have turned up eight other fan blades on similar CFM engines that also had cracks. The fan blade that broke was last inspected six years earlier and, it was determined, suffered from metal fatigue even then — but it went unnoticed by a less sophisticated exam used at the time.Fan blades have been thought to have no real lifetime limit. CFM and FAA officials said they were now considering whether blades must be replaced at some point even if they don't show wear.Representatives from CFM also testified about testing and certification of jet engines, which are supposed to be built to prevent pieces from breaking off and flying free.The investigation is continuing. Most of Wednesday's hearing was highly technical. It was led by one of the safety board's five members, Bella Dinh-Zarr. The full board is expected to determine a probable cause for the accident in the next several months.Meanwhile, Riordan's husband, Michael, said in a statement on behalf of his family that they were "grateful for the heroic actions of the passengers who tried to save Jennifer's life.""The most important thing now is making sure that the aircraft and engine failures that caused Jennifer's untimely and unnecessary death never happen again," he said. 4408
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A potential partnership between the San Diego Unified School District and UC San Diego could help prevent the spread of the coronavirus within the school district.On Tuesday, officials with SD Unified and UC San Diego will discuss a collaborative effort that will provide COVID-19 testing -- with rapid results -- for district students and staff members every two weeks.Under the proposed testing program, all students and staff would be tested even if no symptoms are shown. The plan is to get their more than 100,000 students and 15,000 staff members tested twice a month.School Board Vice President Richard Barrera said, “We can’t wait for the federal and state government to provide so we can reopen our schools. We have to take the initiative ourselves ... being able to test on our campuses both students and staff is the best way to get large numbers of people being tested. UC San Diego would bring health professionals onto our campuses to do the testing.”San Diego Unified School District schools are currently in Phase One of the district's reopening plan. Under Phase One, which began Oct. 13, teachers have returned to campuses to provide appointment-based, in-person instruction for elementary school students identified as having “the greatest needs.”Phase Two of the district’s reopening plan would begin for elementary school students on Jan. 4, 2021. Middle and high Schools will start Jan. 25, at the beginning of the third academic quarter.SD Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten, district School Board President Dr. John Lee Evans, and UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K.
