2018 was toxic.That's the view of the esteemed Oxford Dictionaries, the British publisher that has been defining language -- and our times -- for over 150 years.It has chosen the word as its annual "Word of the Year," arguing that it's "the sheer scope of its application that has made it the standout choice," a video posted on the Dictionary's twitter page explains.Strictly defined as "poisonous," Oxford Dictionaries says that its research shows that "this year more than ever, people have been using 'toxic' to describe a vast array of things, situations, concerns and events.""In its original, literal use, to refer to poisonous substances, 'toxic' has been ever-present in discussions of the health of our communities, and our environment," the video explains, pointing, among other examples, to the recent increase in discussion surrounding the "toxicity of plastics."But it adds that "toxic" has "truly taken off into the realm of metaphor, as people have reached for the word to describe workplaces, schools, cultures, relationships and stress."It adds the "Me Too" movement has "put the spotlight on toxic masculinity" whereas in politics more broadly "the word has been applied to the rhetoric, policies, agendas and legacies of leaders and governments around the globe."It certainly seems to have made its mark on CNN -- with around 600 news stories and opinion pieces online featuring the word in 2018 so far, popping up in articles about everything from US President Donald Trump, to conspiracy website Infowars, the national debt, Michigan's drinking water and Tide pods.Part of Oxford University Press (OUP), a department of the University of Oxford, the dictionary has, in the past, turned to neologisms to describe the zeitgeist. A Barrio Logan school that is under construction is the center of a battle. Artists in the community painted a mural at Memorial Preparatory School in the 1970s and part of the construction involves tearing that wall down, an action the artists tried to fight.The artists gathered outside the school Wednesday to voice their concerns over the destruction of the wall. They said they asked the San Diego Unified School District to move the mural before tearing the wall down, but the school said asbestos in the wall made it too dangerous to move and it could not be saved.The artists said the wall is a celebration of the Chicano community.“What I painted on the wall was the diversity of the students, the diversity of the world. I got on there blacks, browns, whites, Chinese and everybody that was concentrated there including Jimmy Hendrix,” said Mario Torero, one of the original artists.A spokesperson for the school district said this construction is years in the making and will ultimately better the community because of the improved infrastructure. The district took high quality photographs of the mural and plans to display those pictures on the newly renovated campus. There will also be space for new murals. They added that they did not want to take the mural down, but had to for safety reasons.For the Chicano community, these actions are not enough. They wanted more effort in trying to preserve the piece of history.“We are finally facing what we want, justice, not just for one, not for all, so this is a very important move we’re doing here. They mean business too, so do we,” said Torero.Wednesday, the original artists and advocates gathered in front of the construction to share their message. Shortly after, a woman sat in the middle of the demolition zone in protest. She was eventually arrested and moments after she left the area, demolition of the mural continued and it fell to the ground. The artists were standing by to watch their work fall.“It is very very hurtful, especially knowing that we were trying to save it and we did everything possible to save it. They went ahead anyway in a callous manner so this just shows you what we’re having to endure.” 2196

(KGTV) - The mother of two girls found dead in their San Bernardino County home will be charged with their murders when she is released from the hospital, Ontario police said Thursday. Officers said Linda Nguyen, 47, was placed under arrest and will be booked when she is medically cleared. She is currently unresponsive, police said. The bodies of Nguyen’s daughters, aged 4 months and 14 years, were discovered by their father Tuesday when he returned home from work. Among the evidence were two suicides notes written by Nguyen “indicating that she intended to kill the children and to kill herself," police Sgt. Bill Russell told reporters. "We do know that the mother was dealing with depression prior to the incident and had dealt with that in the past," he said.
