If you are filing for divorce, it could take much longer than you think. There is a backlog in family court of about four months, according to the Court Executive Officer, Michael Roddy.  Sherman McEachern found that out as he was going through his divorce process. He and his soon to be ex-wife filed for divorce in October. McEachern said it should have been finalized in April. When he tried to find out why divorce documents were not mailed back to him yet, he learned it was going to take much longer. “I called the clerk’s office. That was the first time, I realized they were telling me we’re eight to ten months behind,” McEachern said.  It’s affecting him both personally and financially. “I can’t change health insurance until I have the signed divorce decree. She doesn’t want to use my health insurance because we’re separated, getting a divorce, so I’m paying for coverage no one’s using,” McEachern said. “We’re hearing a lot of complaints from people,” Roddy said. “They want to get divorced.” Roddy said this fiscal year, they’ve had to make million in budget cuts on top of a million deficit.  “That’s a million dollar hit to the court. We lost about 100 employees and we had a hiring freeze,” Roddy said.  In small claims court, Roddy said it takes about a year to set your case for trial.  When asked who is at fault for the backlog, Roddy said it started with the recession. “The recession hit California very hard, hit the courts very hard, and we have not bounced back to that level,” Roddy said. “It’s just very frustrating because every day, I’m still being tied to a marriage that we both have left from,” McEachern said. He added that it is “disheartening” that people pay for a process and the service isn’t being delivered. Roddy said they are hoping for more money in this next fiscal year, which they can use for personnel. He is expecting a flood of new orders in family court as the new tax law could affect divorce cases, with the changes in alimony payments. 2076

In a bizarre twist following the Parkland, Florida school shooting that killed 17 people, the confessed shooter Nikolas Cruz has been receiving "fan letters" from across the nation. The Sun Sentinel reported that Cruz not only has been receiving letters from admirers, he has also received money for his commissary account, which allows inmates to purchase snacks and accessories. So far, Cruz has been given 0. The letters, many of which are coming from teenage girls, are not being shown to Cruz as he is on suicide watch at the jail.Broward County Public Defender Howard Finkelstein told the Sun Sentinel the craze is "perverted." Some of the letters have included suggestive photos of young women. According to the Sun Sentinel, one woman from Chicago sent nine photos of herself that were sexually suggestive. "In my 40 years as public defender, I've never seen this many letters to a defendant," he said. “We read a few religious ones to him that extended wishes for his soul and to come to God,” Finkelstein added, “but we have not and will not read him the fan letters or share the photos of scantily-clad teenage girls.”The Sun Sentinel reported that one person from Texas sent a letter that included hand-drawn hearts and happy faces. "Your eyes are beautiful and the freckles on your face make you so handsome," the woman said in a letter to Cruz. “I’m really skinny and have 34C sized breasts.”A teenager wrote, “I’m 18-years-old. I’m a senior in high school. When I saw your picture on the television, something attracted me to you," the Sun Sentinel reported.Cruz, who admitted to killing 17 people last month at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, awaits trial. If you've been hearing the disembodied voice of a laughing young woman or child in your home lately, there's (probably) no need to call a ghost hunter.According to The Verge, Amazon confirmed on Wednesday that "Alexa," the voice of Echo smart speakers, may cackle unprompted from time to time.In a statement to Scripps National, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the company is changing how to make Alexa laugh. "In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase 'Alexa, laugh,'" Amazon said. "We are changing that phrase to be 'Alexa, can you laugh?' Which is less likely to have false positives, and we are disabling the short utterance 'Alexa, laugh.' (KGTV) — Though it stands nearly 20-feet tall, The Spirit of Imperial Beach eludes some residents.  The 18-foot tall statue of a bronze surfer holding a longboard at his side stands tall just north of Imperial Beach Pier. At the foot of the statue, two children building sandcastles.The statue, designed by artist A. Wasil, was dedicated on Jan. 3, 2009, and aims to honor the IB community's cherished surfing and sandcastle history.Many consider IB one of the birthplaces of surfing.SURFINGImperial Beach has continued to provide both challenging and easy-going waves for surfers. Not only those who take to the waves, but those who design and shape boards have called IB home.According to the city, pioneers of surfing came to the Tijuana Sloughs as early as 1937 to shape their sport. While at times the waters in IB close to Mexico are in no condition to swim, the city remains proud of its place in surfing history.Not only does the statue commemorate surfing culture, but IB's outdoor surfboard museum also honors 25 prominent surfboard shapers, nine of which are local.SAND CASTLESSandcastles played a prominent role at Imperial Beach for more than 30 years. Castles, sea animals, and more were carefully crafted on the shoreline during the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition.The event was canceled in 2011, due to increasing costs and a lack of volunteers.This gave rise to IB's Sun & Sea Festival, which has given a home for sand sculptors to continue their creative work. 1554

In a fleeting moment, life can change dramatically. Two summers ago, Fred Quin was celebrating the 4th of July at his family’s lake cottage near Grand Rapids, Michigan. They loaded up the boat and headed to the sand bar.“I decided to go off the front of the boat, and that’s when it gets fuzzy,” Quin siad.Quin's girlfriend, Meghan Anderson, noticed Fred was acting strangely. She walked over to him and grabbed his shoulder.  He didn’t move.The group grabbed a raft, put it under Fred, called 911 and floated him to shore.  They were met by an ambulance.Within four hours, Fred was in surgery.  He'd shattered his C-6 vertebrae, causing his body to become motionless. "The surgery was to remove those pieces, put a donor bone in, put a plate in the front side, and on the back side put two rods going down my spine. And they fused my C-5 to C-7 vertebras," Quin said.The trauma doctor told Fred he would never walk again, and he would be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.“It was devastating,” Anderson said.Quin wasn't giving up on his hope to walk someday, so he spent every day in therapy. With Anderson always by his side and after months of rehab, there was a sign of progress. Eventually, he began to regain feeling in his leg.“My first moment was my big toe on my left foot,” Quin said.Quin moved back home and started intense workouts at Detroit Medical Center's Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM).“Fred’s determination is what makes you make it enjoyable to come to work,” RIM Physical Therapist Kyle Weishaupt said.They have been putting Fred in a wearable motorized machine that helps increase strength and endurance during workouts.“With the robot, the Exoskeleton, and me, we can get him up, and we can do over 1,000 steps in one session,” Weishaupt said.As the steps progressed, so did Quin and Anderson’s relationship. On their eight-year dating anniversary, they returned to the water for a pontoon ride, and Quin proposed.“The next goal is to walk down the aisle with Meghan with just with one crutch,” he said.On May 12, Meghan became Fred’s bride, and he accomplished his biggest goal.He walked down the aisle on his wedding day — fulfilling his dream and sharing his special day with family and friends. “Whether it’s exactly how we wanted it to happen or not, that’s not what matters. It's that we’re doing it together, and we’re happy," Meghan Quin said. After the honeymoon, the Quins plan on getting back to their life and setting new goals for their future. His next big challenge is to master walking in the grocery store.  2673
