SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Italian restaurant in Encinitas agreed to pay ,800 to settle a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit filed by a former employee who alleged her hours were substantially cut, and she was ultimately fired, after she told her employer she was expecting, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced Tuesday.After informing the owner in 2015 that she was expecting, the server was told that she "should stay home since she was pregnant, that her pregnancy had caused coverage problems, and that (the owner) would offer a position with less pay for more work so that she would not come back from her pregnancy leave," according to the complaint filed against Maurizio Trattoria Italiana LLC.She was fired in the summer of 2015, while less experienced servers were hired, according to the complaint.RELATED: Lawsuit aims to stop California's AB 5 from taking effect"Women should not be penalized for having children," said Christopher Green, director of the EEOC's San Diego office. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person at Southwestern College has tested positive for tuberculosis and may have exposed others to the disease, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday.The agency is working with the college to notify people who were possible exposed to TB. The period of possible exposure is from last Sept. 10 through Feb. 21, according to the HHSA.Tuberculosis is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact with an infectious person. Most people who are exposed do not become infected."We are recommending that all the identified people get tested to make sure they are not infected," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent the infectious form of the disease."The HHSA and college are reaching out to students and other members of the public who possibly interacted with the positive-testing individual. They can go to the college's Student Health Services Student Center, Room 601F, 900 Otay Lakes Road, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.Affected college employees will be tested separately by Occupational Health.The infected person was not publicly identified, nor did officials specify whether it was a student or staffer.Symptoms of active tuberculosis include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. Tuberculosis can be treated and cured with medication. People who have TB symptoms or are immuno-compromised are encouraged to see their medical health care provider to rule out TB.Tuberculosis is not uncommon in the San Diego region but has been decreasing since the early 1990s and has stabilized in recent years. In 2013, 206 cases were reported in the county, the lowest number since local TB cases peaked at 469 in 1993. There were 237 cases reported in 2017 and 226 in 2018. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Hanukkah, Judaism's eight-day commemoration of the temple rededication that followed the Maccabees' victory over a larger Syrian army, begins at sundown Thursday evening, with socially distant and virtual events replacing public menorah lighting ceremonies because of coronavirus-related restrictions.Hanukkah runs through Friday, Dec. 18 this year.At 5 p.m. Thursday, Liberty Station -- in partnership with The Chabads of Downtown San Diego and Pacific Beach -- will host a public menorah lighting at Liberty Station's Central Promenade to commemorate the first night of Hanukkah. The family-friendly festivities will feature music and the traditional lighting of the menorah.Entertainment includes Cyr Wheel Acrobats and Fire Dancers, packaged treats and the traditional lighting of the menorah. The Central Promenade has 20,000 square feet of space in which to spread out and socially distance. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A security guard at a bar in Little Italy was sentenced Friday to six years in state prison for shooting a patron during an argument outside the establishment.Dangelo Jeffrey, 24, pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of assault, discharging a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon for the April 20 attack that began at the El Camino Bar, 2400 India St., according to Deputy District Attorney Mary Naoom.Around 2 that morning, Jeffrey got into an argument with the male victim and others, and made threats. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was shot when a verbal argument turned physical in the Valencia Park neighborhood of San Diego, authorities said.It happened just after 9 p.m. Saturday in the 5000 block of Palin Street, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.``During the argument it turned physical with pushing,'' Heims said. ``There were gunshots and a 35-year-old female was shot in the foot.''The woman was driven to a hospital with a wound not believed to be life-threatening, he said.There was no suspect description, Heims said. 549
