An Ohio state Senator used the term "colored people" and asked if the coronavirus pandemic is disproportionately affecting black people because they "do not wash their hands as well as other groups" during a public hearing earlier this week.State Sen. "I was trying to focus on why COVID-19 affects people of color at a higher rate since we really do not know all the reasons."In response to Huffman's comments, the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus issued a statement calling on all 132 members of the Ohio General Assembly and their staffs to take racial equity and implicit bias training."It is just unbelievable he would ask that kind of question or use that kind of terminology," said Ohio NAACP President Tom Roberts, who used to represent Huffman's district.According to the bio on his state senator page, Huffman has a medical degree and is a practicing physician.The CDC says there are several reasons why African Americans are disproportionately contracting the virus. Black people are more likely to live in cities and multi-generational households, which increases the risk of spread. Black people are also more likely to be employed as essential workers and less likely to be offered paid sick leave. As disinfecting wipes and sprays fly off store shelves, companies are looking for new ways to keep surfaces coronavirus-free. Some are looking at repurposing UV light technology, a cleaning solution that’s been used for decades.Ava Robotics and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology partnered on a project to create a robot that uses UV-C light to disinfect large areas.“It was about a 4,000 square foot space. It was able to disinfect that in less than 30 minutes,” said Youssef Saleh with Ava Robotics.The purpose -- cleaning large, busy spaces of virus and bacteria, specifically coronavirus.“UV is not new. Robots are not new themselves,” Saleh said.“It's actually been in practice in hospitals for probably four decades plus,” said Dr. Eric Hill, the Chair of Emergency Services at Medical Center of Aurora. It’s usually used to sterilize rooms.“Anything that the light hits, it can kill. So it has to be in direct contact with the light beam and it has to be in contact for a certain period of time,” Hill said.“There are three factors of effectiveness of UV light, the first is the power itself,” Saleh explained. “Then there's the distance to the object that you're trying to disinfect, and then there is the amount of time.”"We cannot see it, it's the same kind of UV radiation you’d get from the sun,” Hill said. “It works by destroying the DNA and the RNA of the organism. And it doesn't affect just viruses, it affects bacteria, viruses, mold, and spores.”While it can kill germs, it can also do damage to us. UV light plays a role in diseases like skin cancer. “It is dangerous for humans to be in direct contact with it,” Dr. Hill said.That’s why the project with Ava Robotics and MIT also factors in safety for humans.“Safety elements have to be part of the solution, thought through, and understood,” Saleh said. The team is working on making the robot more adaptable to changing spaces, like warehouses, and potentially other large spaces like grocery stores and schoolsBut Hill says UV light isn’t a complete replacement for traditional cleaning methods.“It does not take the place of things like wiping something down,” he said. “But after you do that...adding in a UV light system can really hit in a broad area...and get all the microorganisms that were in there.”Hill also warns consumers that are interested in this to look at products closely.“Several hundred dollars is realistic for a good UV light system,” he explained. “We have seen much more of a demand of it, if you go on Amazon the amount of UV light products I’ve seen pushed out is incredible.” 2591

As hundreds of thousands of workers were sent home, and office buildings evacuated over coronavirus concerns, the CDC is warning about a potential secondary health concern when they come back: Legionnaires disease.The CDC should know, they are dealing with a Legionella bacteria discovery itself in some of their leased buildings in the Atlanta area. Several buildings are now closed because the bacteria was found in their water system, likely because of the prolonged shutdown."During the recent closures at our leased space in Atlanta, working through the General Services Administration (GSA), CDC directed the landlord to take protective actions," the CDC said in a statement to CNN."Despite their best efforts, CDC has been notified that Legionella, which can cause Legionnaires' Disease, is present in a cooling tower as well as in some water sources in the buildings. Out of an abundance of caution, we have closed these buildings until successful remediation is complete."The bacteria grows in warm or stagnant water, which is why there is concern as office buildings and restaurants sit abandoned during the pandemic. The bacteria is common in water, and is usually only a problem when the water becomes aerosolized and people breath it in; common sources are showers and water fountains. Legionella bacteria can cause deadly pneumonia.Last year, the CDC reports, 4,294 cases were reported. So far this year, 1,813 cases have been reported.It’s not known if the pandemic-caused shutdowns will worsen the problem or improve it; people are not gathering in hotels, offices or factory buildings as much, however thousands of miles of pipes in buildings are sitting empty and stagnating in the warm summer months."There is currently no nationwide surveillance of water systems for Legionella disease," Chris Edens, an epidemiologist on CDC's Legionella team, told CNN. He said state health departments that normally monitor and report cases of Legionella infection are tied up dealing with coronavirus.To reduce the likelihood of the bacteria growing in pipes, keep cold water cold and hot water hot; Legionella bacteria grows between 80° and 120° Fahrenheit.The CDC has recommendations on their website for building owners reopening after a prolonged shutdown. 2275

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Late U.S. Senator John McCain will be laid to rest at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis.A private memorial service will first be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel.
