GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Crews battling the sprawling Pine Gulch Fire were presented with another problem overnight Tuesday — a flurry of lightning, and not solely from a rain-producing thunderstorm.Instead, it was the fire itself — now an estimated 125,000 acres after growing 37,000 acres overnight — that produced cloud-to-ground lightning for several hours early Wednesday. The phenomenon was a product of pyrocumulus clouds, which can form when moisture or atmospheric instability moves over an intense heat source, according to the National Weather Service. In the case of the Pine Gulch Fire on Tuesday night, an outflow boundary had produced showers near the Wyoming border, north of the fire area. When that moisture moved south, the fire responded with a rapid output of heat, leading to the pyrocumulus, according to the NWS forecast discussion Wednesday morning.Radar showed consistent lightning strikes for several hours, and NWS employees could see the lightning from their office in Grand Junction. The extreme nature of the Pine Gulch Fire produced a couple more byproducts, noticeable in Grand Junction overnight. When the smoke plume from the fire rebuilt, the temperature in Grand Junction rose from 78 to 90 degrees, according to the NWS forecast discussion. The plume was also dispersing ash, which was falling in Grand Junction.Lightning has been a steady concern for crews battling the fires. While some thunderstorms were in the forecast this week, they were likely to be dry, with not much rainfall and more lightning, increasing the fire risk. The Pine Gulch Fire is one of four major fires currently burning in Colorado that have already scorched more than 175,000 acres of land. The Grizzly Creek Fire burning in Glenwood Canyon was at 29,000 acres Wednesday and has Interstate 70 still shut down. The Cameron Peak Fire in western Larimer County was 15,738 acres as of Wednesday morning, and the Williams Fork Fire burning in Grand County was 6,726 acres. This story was originally published by Ryan Osborne on KMGH in Denver. 2056

Health officials in Rockland, New York, say that a group who attended a recent party sparking a localized outbreak of coronavirus cases are not cooperating with officials.Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel told reporters on Wednesday that a subpoena will be issued in order to force the party attendees to comply with the county’s contact tracing efforts. Dr. Schnabel said that eight subpoenas in total will be issued.Health officials hope to be able to find out who those party attendees have been in contact with amid efforts to minimize the spread of the virus.Dr. Schnabel said that the host, who was symptomatic at the time of the party, infected seven others with the virus. All eight are in their 20s, she said.Dr. Schnabel said that health investigators have been hung up on by infected revelers, or allegedly been lied to.“They deny being at the party even though we have found their name from another party attendee, or a parent provides us with the information” she said. “Many do not answer their cellphones or call back. Sometimes parents answer for their adult children and promise that they have been home consistently when they have not been.Dr. Schnabel said that large gatherings remain an issue."The risk for transmission of the virus is high and very real."The failure to comply with the subpoena is “costly.”“,000 a day,” Dr. Schnabel told reporters.“These civil fines will be declared to those who ignore us or fail to comply,” Dr. Schnabel said. “This is a serious public health issue – a deadly one.”Rockland County Executive Ed Day said that the party attendees “aren’t in trouble,” but agreed that there are serious consequences for not complying with the health commissioner’s investigation.“If you get in the way of a health department investigation, we will take every step necessary to ensure we respond appropriately and we’re talking a serious response,” Day said. 1914

Have you ever looked at a person in an ad and wondered, what do they look like in real life? Now, with at least one company's ads, you won't have to wonder.CVS has unveiled a beauty campaign using un-retouched images, aimed at creating a more realistic standard of beauty. But do they really look that different? It's called the Beauty in Real Life campaign. CVS says the goal of this campaign is to create a new and more realistic standard of beauty. The way you can tell if an ad is a part of the campaign is it has a CVS Beauty Mark, a white stamp watermark that reads beauty unaltered. If you see the stamp on an ad it means that the images in the ad haven't been "materially altered." That means the brand did not "digitally alter or change a person's shape, size, proportion, skin or eye color or enhance or alter lines, wrinkles or other individual characteristics."So essentially if you saw the person in the ad walking down the street, they would look like they do in the ad. That's the goal, because in general, the editing of photos in ads really has has an impact on how women and girls feel about themselves.A survey found two out of three women strongly agree that the media has set an unrealistic standard of beauty. 80% of women feel worse about themselves after seeing a beauty ad. 90% of girls ages 15 to 17 want to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance. We asked a few people what they think about this new initiative."I think that's awesome," one woman said.  "I think we've been given unrealistic beauty standards for a really long time. So it's really nice to see companies putting in women who actually look like me. I don't have to have these unrealistic standards of what I should look like. I think it's a really awesome thing."Other women felt differently."Non touching is a good start," one woman said. "But if I saw that I would be like, real life? I don't know if I'd look like that in real life."Her friend agreed."When I wake up I do not look like that in real life," the woman said. "So I think like the touch up is a good start, but for that like slogan for the campaign I feel it's sending the wrong message in a way."This campaign is rolling out now digitally and the goal is for all the images in the beauty sections of CVS stores to reflect transparency by the end of 2020. 2339

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — President Donald Trump and rival Joe Biden have spent Labor Day diminishing each other's credentials on the economy and understanding of the American worker. Watch Trump's presser below:Labor Day typically marks the unofficial start to the fall campaign season as candidates accelerate their activity for the final sprint to Election Day. Biden was meeting with labor leaders and union workers in Pennsylvania while his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, campaigned in Wisconsin. Both are key swing states. WATCH Harris' roundtable below:Republican Vice President Mike Pence was in Wisconsin, too, while Trump held a White House press conference. This will mark Harris’ first trip to the state since accepting the party’s vice-presidential nomination. The New York Times reports that the senator will visit union workers and leaders as well as Black business people and pastors in Milwaukee. Labor Day typically marks the unofficial start to the fall campaign as candidates accelerate their activity for the final sprint. But Monday’s events are playing out this year against the backdrop of a pandemic that has upended campaigning, forcing much of the traditional activity online. 1209
