(KGTV) - A Southern California police department's Facebook post is igniting the online debate over panhandling.Ventura Police posted a video on their Facebook page Wednesday discouraging locals not to give to panhandlers and to give to charities instead."Want to help those in need in our community? Please say no to panhandling and yes to charities," Ventura Police's post read. "Giving money to panhandlers often feeds addictions and does not help someone get long-term help."The video features a silent officer holding various signs reading things like "want to help?" and then "please don't give to panhandlers."Comments on the viral video have ranged from supportive to not, some claiming that charities are not enough to solve the issue. (KGTV) -- Democrat Juan Vargas has won reelection to the U.S. House in the 51st Congressional District, the Associated Press says. He faced Republican Juan Hidalgo. Juan Vargas was first elected in 2013. He served on the committee of financial services and the committee of foreign affairs from 2019 to 2020.Vargas previously served on the State Senate representing the 40th District, the State Assembly in the 79th District, and the San Diego City Council.Hidalgo is a retired US Marine. He faced Vargas in 2018 with Vargas capturing 71 percent of the vote.The district includes all of Imperial County and the southern part of San Diego County including National City, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, and El Centro. 721

(KGTV) - Income taxes on military pension is pushing a lot of people out of California. A new study proves that taking those taxes away would actually help both veterans and the state. For the people who served their country, it's tough to make it in California. "My wife just retired," said Matthew Schillingburg. "I just retired and so we're all on disposable income right now."He served in the army for more than 20 years. When his income is taxed by the state it can be hard to get by. "The thing that’s really holding us here, this community right here in San Diego that we grew up and love so much, our kids and our grandkids here," Schillingburg added.He joins 1.8 million military veterans who live in California. Many of them are looking to leave the state for more affordable areas where their pension won't take a hit. Assembly Bill 2394 is trying to change that. "If we can eliminate that, that helps us have more disposable income and we can consume more in the community that we love so much," said Schillingburg.According to a new study, if veterans were exempt from state taxes there would be big changes by the year 2025. More than 12,000 jobs would be added to the economy, along with 0 million in total personal income, million in state and local taxes and billion in total business sales. The bill is currently in committee. If it does pass, it could go into effect as soon as January 2019.  1484

(CNN) -- Jamba Juice is squeezing out part of its name. It's now simply now known as "Jamba."The health food chain announced the name change Thursday. Jamba said the new name better reflects its menu, which has more than juices. It's expanding its offerings with smoothies, bowls and sandwiches as consumers gravitate toward healthier foods.The company said its loyal fans have been calling it "Jamba" for years. But the official name change is part of a larger modernization initiative for the 30-year-old company, which also includes a new mobile app, remodeled stores and new delivery options through Uber Eats and Postmates.Jamba is also trying to stay on trend with plant-based alternatives. Jamba said its beverages will soon be available to be made with spirulina, oat milk and pea protein."Food and beverage category lines are blurring so fast, especially in the premium functional segment, that it no longer makes sense to limit a brand's identity," said Duane Stanford, executive editor of Beverage Digest, a trade publication. "Smart brands are creating platforms that have meaning and meet consumers wherever they are."Jamba changed its name as "juice" has become a dirty word in recent years.
