SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Lupus patients were shocked and scared when they found out they couldn't get a refill of their life-altering prescription, due to COVID-19.Grandmother Michele Fumar said her daughter has had lupus, an autoimmune disease, since she was 11. She's 27 now, married with two young kids.Her daughter got an email from Kaiser Permanente reading in part, "in order to keep an essential supply of hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) for critically ill COVID-19 patients, we have placed a temporary freeze on refills."She was just shocked, we were all shocked," Fumar said about reading that email. "This drug is very important to maintain her health so yes it is just very frustrating."The kind of lupus her daughter has attacks her kidneys. Even while taking her prescription she's had complications. Fumar said her daughter became ill at the mall several years back, suddenly weak with a headache. That trip to the emergency room turned into a week long hospital stay.Fumar said her daughter has been trying to wean off of the medication with no luck thus far. "She only has 16 days left of her prescription." Now they're both scared. Her daughter was told to space out the medication, but they don't know how that will affect her health.Janae Lessnau was just diagnosed with lupus in January. On average it takes six years to get diagnosed with lupus, meeting several criteria from several specialists, the Lupus Foundation says.Lessnau said the drug has already had a huge impact on her life, "it helps with fatigue, it helps with the joint pain. It's not really affecting my kidneys or any vital organs right now but not being on it, it could increase the spread, you know increase the process."Lessnau said she felt lucky to pick up her monthly prescription Tuesday at CVS. She heard at the pharmacy she won't be able to get a refill in the future.In contrast, CVS put out a statement reading in part, "With client consent, CVS Caremark is setting appropriate limits on the quantity of each of these medicines for potential use in treating COVID-19. Members who already take these medicines for approved uses will be able to bypass the new quantity limits.""We all feel bad for the patients who may be suffering from COVID-19 but it's not a proven solution," Fumar said. Lessnau agreed adding, "when did we get to the point where we pick and choose lives?"The Lupus Foundation is contacting politicians in Sacramento for help, hoping to find a solution."Right now, today we can't say yes there is a shortage, I don't believe that's true. But what I am afraid of is it will be very quick, because if people are hoarding the drug it will turn out to be like the toilet paper," Executive Director of the Lupus Foundation Southern California Division Elizabeth Savage said.After reaching out to Kaiser Permanente they said they are re-evaluating their policy. 2874

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Just in time for the Fourth of July, the Mission Beach Plunge pool is reopening to the public. The iconic pool was one of the original attractions when the amusement park opened in 1925. However, it had run into hard times in recent years and has been closed for much of the last decade. One management company went bankrupt. The next came up with a renovation plan, only to discover dangerous, corroding conditions inside, leading to the pool's closure in 2014.Thanks to a partnership between the City of San Diego, Fit Athletic, and Pacifica Enterprises, the renovated pool is almost unrecognizable. "This is absolutely special, incredible," said Dr. McQuary, a longtime San Diego resident who is active in the community."What I remember about the Plunge was the issues and concerns about how we can swim and still be safe. When things would fall from the sky, it wasn't rain; it was the plaster from the ceiling!"The Plunge at Fit features floor to wall glass ceilings and a retractable roof. It also incorporates some of the building's original features, replicating the tiling and original archways.Part of the new Fit Athletic Mission Beach gym, the facility also offers beach views throughout. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Memorial Day Weekend kicked off Friday night on the USS Midway. As a part of their Legacy Week, they had their annual benefit concert. This year, Daughtry took the stage. Kevin Beam is a big fan and made sure to buy his tickets early, “you got Memorial Day Weekend, Daughtry and beautiful San Diego”. People filled the top deck of the Midway. Ahead of the concert, the USS Midway Foundation presented three ,800 checks to different local charities. The night served as a way for people to remember and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Penny Erickson was especially grateful for the event Friday, “I’m from a military family my dad was from Pearl Harbor so it means a lot to me.” Chuck Erickson is a volunteer for the USS Midway and a veteran. Friday night, he tells 10News he’s making sure he is grateful all weekend long, “a lot of people lost their lives giving us the freedom we have today”. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- La Mesa Police Department announced it has dropped their charges against Amaurie Johnson, a black man whose controversial arrest was captured in a viral video last week.La Mesa Chief of Police Walt Vasquez said that "after a full review of all of the evidence in the criminal investigation" against Johnson, the police department will not seek prosecution "on any of the alleged misdemeanor charges."The announcement comes two days since the department released body camera footage showing the events that led up to an arrest video that surfaced last week.A week prior, a video surfaced showing an argument between Johnson, a black man, and a white police officer at the Grossmont Trolley Station. The officer is seen pushing Johnson into a sitting position onto a bench. Eventually, Johnson is handcuffed and told he is being charged with assaulting an officer.It's unknown what actually occurred in the first few moments of the encounter because the witness video began recording sometime after the confrontation began, and the first the 30 seconds of the video provide by police starts without any sound. On the day the body camera video was released, Vasquez said the beginning of the video is muted because of the way the body camera is activated."Mr. Johnson is relieved that the criminal aspect of this case seems to be over with (but) until we have something formal from the prosecuting agency, he is not at rest in believing that it is completely over with," Johnson's attorney, Troy Owens, said. "He has still expressed that he is shaken up and upset by what took place. He has expressed that this is not the first time an incident like that has happened, it's just the first time it happened to be captured on camera, so Mr. Johnson is adamant he wants to see change.""We do believe that the officer should be investigated for potential criminal liability, but there is also a civil aspect to this. Mr. Johnson and I are discussing our options as far as moving forward with a complaint with the city of la mesa and potentially taking this to state or federal court," Owens added.The incident sparked a large protest last Saturday in La Mesa. Thousands of demonstrators took over city's streets to protest Johnson's arrest and the department's investigation of the incident. The peaceful demonstration and marches ended when a large group gathered outside of the La Mesa Police Department and began attacking a bear cat vehicle that was brought in to help disperse the crowd. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lifeguards say two people were rescued from a trail in the Blacks Beach area on Sunday in separate incidents.The first involved a woman who injured her ankle, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. The woman was about half-way down before being injured. Lifeguards put her on a stretcher and used ropes to lower her down to the beach. She was taken by lifeguards to meet paramedics.The second occurred on the same trail, involving a woman suffering from heat exhaustion. She was unable to make it down the rest of the trail, requiring lifeguards to hoist her to the beach below to get her to paramedics.Lifeguards said with Labor Day weekend approaching and a heatwave expected next weekend, they are reminding visitors to local trails to know their limits, wear proper footwear for uneven beach terrain, and make sure they have plenty of water.Beach lifeguards say they don't expect to see crowds slow down anytime soon. 945
