SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Valley Fire has scorched more than 17,000 acres forcing families and animals out of their homes, but during all the chaos, the Children's Nature Retreat in Alpine was able to find safe homes for most of its 143 animals. It's been a tough last few days says Executive Director Agnes Barrelet, who spotted the fire and a hillside, the minute it sparked."You can't panic. You have to worry, but you have to remain cool. If you panic, your animals are going to sense it, and it's going to be worse," said Barrelet.In all, the nature retreat had to evacuate 118 of their animal which wasn't easy."We evacuated the most fragile animals first, and then the one's that may panic. I evacuated all the horses, then the mini horses mini donkeys," Barrelet says.A majority of the animals were taken by Good Samaritan's and given places to stay at various locations in East County."They were calling us and we were determining what space they had, and how much space. We also needed to know the height of the fences," Barrelet said. "That gave us an indication of who would take which animals where."It's been a tough year for the Children's Nature Retreat, as they were forced to close earlier this year due to COVID-19, and now the fires have temporarily shut them down."The fire of course forced us to close down again. If we are closed down, we have no revenues at all," Barrelet added. 1409

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego region needs to develop new housing units at a pace not seen since before the housing bubble burst to meet the demand.A new report from the San Diego Association of Governments says the region needs to add about 171,000 new houses, condos and apartments by 2029, based on a state projection of population growth. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff's Department has released the number of inmates it transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody in 2019. In a meeting that lasted nearly four hours on Tuesday, the department announced it transferred 271 people to ICE for offenses like assault, battery, and sexual abuse exploitation. The information was released during the virtual Truth Act Forum, a forum required by law, for any local law enforcement agency that chooses to transfer people to ICE. After the department's presentation, there were hours of public comment criticizing the practice. There was also a presentation from the San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium. "We want to end all transfers, regardless of whether they were allowed under the law or not," said Lilian Serrano, the chair of the consortium. Critics also argue that Sheriff Bill Gore has found a loophole by posting lists of "Inmates Pending Release"; critics are calling for that practice to stop. "What we’re seeing is ICE picking people up in the parking lots -- this is a practice we’re seeing throughout our county," said Serrano. After listening to hours of public comment, Gore addressed the community's concerns, saying he wants to form a working group to look at some of the issues brought up during public comment. “I think we can come to an accommodation when it comes to the inmate pending release report. I think we can make changes there, significant changes there,” said Gore. The sheriff said he's following the Values Act, only transferring those with a qualifying conviction or judicial warrant, with ICE only allowed contact with inmates if they agree to be interviewed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The search is on for three teenagers that held a man at gunpoint then stole his car in Paradise Hills.According to San Diego police, the incident happened around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at the victim's apartment complex on Doriana Street.Police believe the carjacking happened just minutes after the same teenagers attempted, but failed, to carjack another man near the intersection of Alta View and Potomac, a few blocks away.The victim suffered a minor injuries to the head and is expected to be OK.Police say the three teens are believed to be between the ages of 16-18. They sped off in the victim's gray Honda and are still on the loose.Detailed descriptions of the teens and a license plate number for the stolen car were not immediately released. 778

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Valley Fire continued to burn overnight in East County as evacuations remain in place.So far, the blaze has scorched 17,345 acres and is 3% contained, as of 6:20 p.m. on Monday. Authorities with the Cleveland National Forest tweeted Monday that the fire had only grown by 408 acres overnight.Monday morning, Cal Fire said new evacuation orders were in place for the areas of Corral Canyon off-road area, Bobcat Meadows, and Los Pinos.Evacuation orders have also been issued for Barrett Lake Dam, while evacuation warnings have been issued for Lake Marina, Dulzura, Dog Patch, Potrero, Campo, Honey Springs, Barrett Junction, Dearhorn Valley, Corte Madera, Pine Valley, and the area from Lyons/Japatul Valley Rd. to the 8 Freeway.Evacuation centers have been set up at Steele Canyon High School at 2440 Campo Road and Joan MacQueen Middle School at 2001 Tavern Road.Cal Fire said Sunday night that 11 habitable structures and 25 outbuildings have so far been destroyed in the fire.
