BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- China pledged on Thursday to make more efforts to aid people living in the drought-stricken Horn of Africa in collaboration with the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC)."We noticed that the ICRC launched an appeal regarding the situation in the Horn of Africa. The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has decided to donate 4 million yuan (about 623,000 U.S. dollars) to the ICRC for its humanitarian aid in the region," said Hua Jianmin, president of the RCSC, while meeting with visiting ICRC President Jakob Kellenberger in Beijing on Thursday.Earlier this month, the RCSC donated 8 million yuan (1.25 million dollars) to famine-plagued countries in the Horn of Africa to be used for emergency humanitarian aid.A donation of 2 million yuan was sent to Kenya through the country's Red Cross organization, while another 2 million went to Ethiopia. The other 4 million yuan was donated to other countries in the region.The Chinese government has decided to provide a total of 90 million yuan (14 million dollars) in emergency food assistance to countries in the Horn of Africa."The Red Cross Society of China is willing to work together with the International Committee for the Red Cross to meet the needs of those who have been affected (by the droughts)," Hua said.Some 12.4 million people in Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia and other countries in the region are in dire need of food due to a serious drought, the worst to hit the region since the 1980s.

BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Gary Locke, the newest U.S. ambassador to China, promised on Sunday to promote bilateral cooperation and understanding between the two countries.Acknowledging challenges in the "important and complex diplomatic and economic bilateral relationship" between the two countries, Locke said he looks forward to working with the Chinese government to expand bilateral cooperation and collaboration.He made the remarks at a press conference held on Sunday afternoon, his first public appearance since arriving in Beijing on Friday evening. Locke's wife Mona Lee and their three children accompanied him at the conference.Speaking about the things he hopes to accomplish over the next several months, Locke said the most important thing will be "to promote stronger and better understanding between the U.S. and China.""This must be done so that more people in the United States understand China, its history, its contributions to world civilization, its challenges and the amazing progress China has made in such a short time," he said.Locke also stressed China's "unique history, culture, and philosophy," which he said must be understood if the two countries wish to forge a more cooperative relationship.Locke, a Democrat, was elected as Washington state's 21st governor in 1996, becoming the first Chinese-American governor in U.S. history. SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- More U.S. Internet users will access Internet through mobile devices than through PCs or other wireline devices by 2015, market research company International Data Corporation (IDC) said in its latest study released on Monday.According to IDC, the number of mobile Internet users will grow by a compound annual growth rage of 16.6 percent between 2010 and 2015, as mobile devices sales, such as smartphones and media tablets, explode."The impact of smartphone and especially, media tablet adoption will be so great that the number of users accessing the Internet through PCs will first stagnate and then slowly decline," said IDC in a forecast.Western Europe and Japan will not be far behind the U.S. in following this trend, the study noted.IDC also predicts that some 40 percent of the world's population will have access to Internet in 2015, when the total number of Internet users will grow to 2.7 billion from 2 billion in 2010."Forget what we have taken for granted on how consumers use the Internet," Karsten Weide, IDC's research vice president of media and entertainment, said in a statement."Soon, more users will access the Web using mobile devices than using PCs, and it's going to make the Internet a very different place," he added.

BEIJING, August 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Women who experience any form of gender-based violence are at greater risk of mental health disorders and related dysfunction and disability, according to Australian researchers Wednesday.Those who'd been through at least one form of this abuse -- which includes intimate partner violence, rape, sexual assault, or stalking -- were almost three times more likely to experience a mental health condition than those who were never victimized, according to Susan Rees, PhD of the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and her colleagues.Those who'd experienced three or four forms had an 11-fold greater risk, reported in the Aug. 3 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.The study "reveals a pattern of social disadvantage, disability, and impaired quality of life among women who have experienced gender-based violence," the researchers wrote.

YUEYANG, Hunan, June 2 (Xinhua) -- The population of finless porpoises, an endangered species of freshwater dolphin that lives in China's Yangtze River, may decrease by over 80 percent over the next 30 years, experts said on Thursday after conducting a field survey along the river.The rare species will edge closer to extinction if no action is taken, said Wang Ding, a dolphin expert from the Hydrobiology Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.Wang's team conducted a survey on Poyang Lake, Dongting Lake and other locations along the Yangtze from Sunday to Wednesday this week.The dolphin population currently stands at 1,000, even lower than that of the giant panda, Wang said.The dolphin population is decreasing by a rate of 6.4 percent annually, Wang said."The next ten years will be a critical period for the conservation of this species," Wang said.A long-lasting drought in central China has lowered water levels in many of the region's lakes and rivers, doing great harm to the dolphins' habitat and leading to a decrease in population, Wang said.Mei Zhigang, a member of Wang's survey team, said that human activity has also contributed to the dropping population.Mei said that large numbers of shipping vessels on the Yangtze have impeded the dolphins' migration path, causing them to reproduce less frequently.
