(AP) — The House has easily passed an .3 billion measure to battle the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S. The sweeping bipartisan vote came just nine days after President Donald Trump requested action.The legislation came together unusually quickly, a rarity in a deeply polarized Washington. The legislation more than triples the .5 billion plan unveiled by Trump just last week. It would speed development of vaccines and new medicines to battle the virus, pay for containment operations, and beef up preparedness. What do you do with your leftovers? For many Americans, it ends up in the trash; the average American wastes a pound a day of food per USDA figures. But an organization in Indiana is taking leftovers to fulfill a need in the community. The organization is called Cultivate, and it is based in South Bend, Indiana. Cultivate, a nonprofit organization, takes food left from event centers, convention centers and banquets. The leftovers are then repackaged and repurposed. “We get great food that’s been donated that’s made by really great chefs that had been going into the trash can,” Jim Conklin of Cultivate said. Food such as prime rib, lobster bisque and fresh vegetables sometimes make it to Cultivate's kitchen. The food then ends up in the stomachs of children, many of whom were not receiving meals outside of their school breakfasts and lunches. Principal of Madison Steam Academy Deb Martin said she has seen first-hand the effects of poverty in her school. Martin said that 93 percent of her students live in poverty. “When you have a limited amount of funds sometimes the first thing to go is your food source, especially if you have a larger family,” Martin said. In the past, Martin noticed that students came to school extra hungry on Monday mornings after going the weekend without being fed.“On Monday’s, our kids run to breakfast,” Martin said, “and when you have that, you know you have food deprived children.”On Fridays, the students are sent home with up to six prepackaged meals prepared by Cultivate. “We believe giving a child meals over the weekend will help their education,” Conklin said. “Which is truly the only way out of poverty.”Martin is thankful for the program. “It’s a unique way to take something that was going to be waste, and now make it into doing what it’s doing for our kids filling in those gaps, feeding those kids nutritious healthy meals that they may not get,” she said. 1931

UNIONTOWN, Ohio — A man and a woman made themselves right at home after they allegedly burglarized a Uniontown, Ohio, residence on Christmas Eve.Uniontown police responded to the 11300 block of Cleveland Avenue around 2:00 p.m. for a report of a suspicious vehicle in a driveway.Upon their arrival, they found the homeowner's relative holding the alleged burglars on ground at gunpoint, according to the report.Richard Nippell, 38, of North Canton, was arrested and charged with aggravated possession of drugs and burglary, according to a police report. The report states he had less than a gram of methamphetamine on him. Camri Cantwell, 20, of Canton, was arrested and charged with burglary.Officer Kim Berry, of the Uniontown Police Department, said Nippell took a shower, and both Nippell and Cantwell made a pot of coffee and did laundry at the time of the alleged burglary.Police recovered the homeowner's jewelry, a computer and copies of keys to the house and car inside the suspicious vehicle.Nippell and Cantwell were booked into the Stark County Jail. 1074

For one Wisconsin student it started on the school bus, last week.Axel started 4K last week, which is a pre-kindergarten year for kids 4 and under in an elementary school setting. His mom, Amy Johnson, wanted to mark the occasion by taking a picture of him on the school bus.Instead of a smile, Johnson got tears and a red face."He was super excited to go, but when the bus came around corner he was really quiet," she told CNN. "The bus opened the door and I looked at him and he started crying."Johnson said she picked Axel up to seat him on the bus but he was clinging onto her. That's when the bus driver, Isabel Lane, comforted him by showing him an open seat right behind her."I told him, 'Buddy, you got this and will have so much fun,' " Johnson said.Lane told CNN that Johnson was trying to get off the bus, but Axel kept grabbing for her."I stuck my hand behind the seat as maybe something else to grab onto and he grabbed my hand," Lane said.Johnson said she got off the bus but turned around, still wanting her "perfect picture."
