SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The first new hospital tower in 40 years in the South Bay could have a major impact addressing a shortage of beds in the region, officials say. Sharp Health Care is set to open its 106 bed Ocean View Tower this week in central Chula Vista. It is adjacent to the 243 bed Sharp Chula Vista original tower, which has seen an overflow due to a growing South Bay with too much demand for health care. "There's about 4,000 new homes in this area that have been built, so more and more we are going to have to provide health care for that population," said Pablo Velez, the hospital's chief executive. While the South Bay has experienced rapid growth, most of the new hospitals have been constructed in North San Diego, where there are higher paying patients, Velez said. At an open house Saturday, more than one thousand South Bay residents got a first look inside the hospital. Each room will be private, with big screen high definition televisions, large bathrooms, USB ports in beds, and local art. The hospital boasts a top floor cafeteria and large family waiting rooms. "I always go to Sharp, and my dad already knows the doctors here and the nurses because he's been in and out a lot of times since early last year," said Cesar Gonzales, an Eastlake resident who came to the open house with his 92-year-old father, a Sharp Chula Vista patient. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The coronavirus pandemic, combined with a recently enacted state law, has created a new problem along San Diego's streets and boardwalks.Business owners say they're being overrun by vendors who set up makeshift stores and crowd sidewalks and walkways, while also luring customers out of long-established businesses."It's pretty much a free-for-all," says David McDaniel, the owner of Paradise Cove near Crystal Pier. "Anybody can sell anything, anywhere."He's partially correct. A new state law, Senate Bill 946, went into effect in 2018. Passed by the legislature and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, it decriminalizes street vending, telling cities that they can create their own guidelines and can only enforce them with tickets for vendors who violate the rules, instead of criminal charges.Several cities in San Diego County, including Carlsbad and Vista, were quick to establish their regulations. San Diego still hasn't.As more vendors set up shop, the Pacific Beach Town Council is asking city leaders to move the process along."We're calling on city leaders to end the swap meet on our boardwalks now," says Brian White, the President of the Pacific Beach Town Council. "We have lots of pedestrian traffic, bicycles, skateboards. There really is no room for this type of vending activity."Earlier this month, the Town Council sent a letter to Mayor Kevin Faulconer and the City Council asking for specific rules.The San Diego City Council started to establish new rules for vendors in 2019. Faulconer sent a draft ordinance to the Economic Development Committee.It would have prohibited vendors on the boardwalk and other high traffic areas. It also would require business permits, set hours for vending, establish distances from public facilities, require vendors to follow health and safety rules, and several other rules.That ordinance passed the committee unanimously on July 25, 2019.The city then held three public forums about it in October. But it never went to the full council for approval."It is an issue that's becoming a real problem. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The latest surge in coronavirus cases has led Girl Scouts San Diego to cancel all in-person gatherings, meetings, and events for the rest of 2020. The decision comes just three weeks after the resumption of in-person troop meetings had been approved.Christa Sherman, Troop Support Manager for Girl Scouts San Diego, told ABC 10News the decision is the responsible one and is widely supported by troops across the county. "Our Girl Scouts are so resourceful and they really want to do what’s best for their communities, for their schools, for their troops," Sherman said.Both the national and local organizations have been building up their ability to support virtual meetings since the beginning of the pandemic. Troop leaders have access to lesson plans and videos. They can bring necessary materials to drop off at scout's homes before the meetings."We’ve had better attendance at meetings, which is crazy, virtually then sometimes when we were meeting in person," said Elise Hilliard, a troop leader in the South Bay.Even camp-outs are now being done virtually. Kids set up tents in the yard or build forts inside. They set up their mobile device so they can share the experience with their friends. Hilliard said the experiences may be different, but that hasn't changed the Girl Scouts mission. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego is trying to stop people from driving onto the Ocean Beach Pier, recently installing plastic pylons. The city recently installed the pylons at the foot of the pier after a car sped onto the structure, hitting two people and a police cruiser in June. The pylons are the first step, but the city says it’s still considering additional options to discourage people from driving onto the pier. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The battle over the Crossroads of the West Gun Show continued Tuesday in Del Mar.The Board that oversees the fairgrounds is reviewing the show that has been hosted at the fairgrounds for the last 28 years.A pro-gun, second-amendment political action committee collected more than 3,100 letters in support of continuing the show in Del Mar.The letters were given to the board for review and consideration. Michael Schwartz, Executive Director of the San Diego County Gun Owners is pushing is pushing for the board to renew the shows contract with no restrictions or limitations."It took us less than a week to collect all these signatures, we could have gotten more. Some are written by entire families who come to the show every year. It is a family event with almost a 30 year history with Del Mar," said Schwartz. Protesters also made an appearance at the board meeting dressed in orange and asking the board to cancel the shows current contract.The Del Mar, Solanna Beach and Encinitas city councils have approved resolutions calling for a ban on the gun shows at the fairgrounds.Guns can be purchased at the show, but California law requires extensive background checks and a waiting period.The board will make a decision to cancel or continue the gun show at it's board meeting in September. 1329
