What pollsters now know is then-candidate Donald Trump persuaded white voters to break with long-held, predictable voting habits and vote for him. Polling samples that once represented the population at-large, no longer did. "The media looked at that and portrayed what we were showing there as being more precise of a prediction than it could ever be," Murray said. These pollsters do not believe a "Silent Trump Voter" exists -- that is someone who is reluctant to tell a pollster they support Trump. “The so-called secret Trump voter doesn’t exist in terms of polling and the idea that polling is missing certain voters," Murray said. "Here you have a president now for 3 1/2 years, almost four years, as president of the United States, so people aren't going to feel a great reluctance to speak to their feelings on that topic," Lee Miringoff said. California just gave museums, galleries, zoos and aquariums the go-ahead to reopen, but the way they operate won't be the same. There are a lot of new rules across the nation and new changes that will affect your entertainment experiences as everyone adjusts to a new normal amid the pandemic.Executive Director Jason Jacobs can't wait to let people back in to the Sacramento, California Zoo. They'll be greeted by alligators, like little Ronnie, a 9-month-old American gator.“He made his way to California during the pandemic as we had scheduled an alligator habitat to open in April of 2020,” said Jacobs.The alligators were on their way from Florida when things shutdown. Since then, veterinarians and scientists from the University of California at Davis have worked with zoo staff. They were ready for the pandemic. As people started the lockdown, officials at the zoo were ordering extra food and supplies for their animals.“We have to have emergency management plans,” said Jacobs. “I’ve worked at zoos threatened by hurricanes, by earthquakes, by wildfires, you just have to be prepared and that’s part of operating a zoo.”And they also knew what they'd need to do to safely reopen.“Shutting down the reptile house, shutting down the playground which kids love, but it’s a high contact area, not having animal education demonstrations,” said Jacobs.The guidelines from California officials are specific. There's a long list of stipulations, things like limited capacity, disinfecting, no large events, no big in person fundraisers. The Sacramento Zoo got creative with some of those new rules.“Things like – stay within your own flock, because our flamingoes flock together, so if you come as a family, stay together,” said Jacobs. “We have other reminders that say to stay an alligators length away, not like little Ronnie alligator, but the big ones that are over 6 feet long.”They've hired more cleaning crews and strongly encourage face coverings. Those masks are a sticking point for the Memphis Zoo, which reopened about a month ago.Chief Marketing Officer Nick Harmeier says, “The biggest pushback on the new policies was the facial covering. People are either for it or completely against it. They didn’t seem like anyone was really in the middle there.”Harmeier says they wanted as many precautions as possible and didn't want to take any risks with their animals either, as there are so many unknowns about COVID-19. They've employed one-way traffic, pulled their gift facilities outside and like everywhere else, they have extremely limited capacity.“That was a big a hah for us,” said Harmeier. “We were like people have been in their houses for three months, we’re going to be slammed but that wasn’t the case and we’re still seeing that today numbers aren’t anywhere close to where they were last year and previous years.”Financially, all zoos and nonprofits have taken a hit. For Memphis, this is fundraising season. And while they're slowly opening back up, the money isn't where it needs to be.“This zoo has been through a lot of hard times – Great Depression, Spanish flu – there’s a lot of things this zoo has withstood. Kelly still found time to talk to fans, give autographs and to meet an underage girl he later invited to his home, according to prosecutors who depicted the R&B star as manipulative and sometimes violent.Other accusers included a girl who met Kelly at her 16th birthday party and a hairdresser who expected to braid the singer's hair only to find that he wanted oral sex instead, court documents said.The accounts emerged Saturday as Kelly made his first court appearance since being accused of sexually abusing four people in a case that could produce another #MeToo reckoning for a celebrity.A judge gave Kelly a chance to go free while awaiting trial, setting bond at million. His collaborators have included Jay-Z and Usher.The jury in 2008 acquitted Kelly of child pornography charges that centered on a graphic video that prosecutors said showed him having sex with a girl as young as 13. He and the young woman allegedly seen with him denied they were in the 27-minute video, even though the picture quality was good and witnesses testified it was them, and she did not take the stand. Kelly could have been sentenced to 15 years in prison.Charging Kelly now for actions that occurred in the same time frame as the allegations from the 2008 trial suggests the accusers are cooperating this time and willing to testify.Because the alleged victim 10 years ago denied that she was on the video and did not testify, the state's attorney's office had little recourse except to charge the lesser offense under Illinois law, child pornography, which required a lower standard of evidence.Each count of the new charges carries up to seven years in prison, and the sentences could be served consecutively, making it possible for him to receive up to 70 years. CEDAR PARK, TX — Three police officers were shot Sunday while responding to a call in Cedar Park, Texas, according to police.The three officers suffered non-fatal injuries while responding to the call on Sunday afternoon and are currently stable at a local hospital.The shooting began an hours-long standoff that lasted throughout the evening on Sunday and well into Monday morning. Two hostages were released from the home on Monday morning at about 8 a.m. CT. About an hour later, a third hostage and the suspect emerged from the home peacefully.Preliminary information obtained by ABC News says the incident started as a domestic dispute. 650

CAMDEN, N.J. -- Lieutenant Gabriel Rodriguez is a part of the Camden County Police Department, a department that started over from scratch seven years ago.“East Camden is actually an area I grew up in. I was born and raised out there. Very familiar territory for me. A lot of my cuts and scratches and bumps out there, a lot of good memories,” Lt. Rodriguez said.Back in 2011, then-Mayor Dana Redd says Camden was confronted with a fiscal and public safety crisis that led them to lay off more than half of the Camden City Police Department.“We were facing a million deficit in fiscal year 11 and looking for ways not only to balance the budget, but to certainly provide for the safety and protection of our citizens,” Former Mayor Dana Redd said.Lt. Rodriguez was part of those layoffs.“When I was laid off in 2011, it was a horrible experience. Not to have a job I was laid off for 10 months,” he said.He wasn’t so sure the transition was a good idea, but then he says he saw a culture change as the new police force was required to be more community driven -- getting out of their vehicles and interacting with the people of Camden.“I received my first thank you in my entire career when I was out on my walking beat as a Camden County Metro police officer. I’ve never heard that before… ‘thank you for your service,’” Lt. Rodriguez said.The process of creating the new model took about two years. Redd says the city hired a consultant and had conversations with stakeholders and representatives from 19 diverse neighborhoods in Camden. As mayor, her intention was to establish a system that would reduce the number of crime victims and help people feel safe.“In my mind and my opinion is that public safety is not just about enforcement. It’s prevention, it’s intervention programs that you have available for children, youth and families, and it’s also reentry programs for individuals who have been formerly incarcerated who are returning home to communities like Camden, New Jersey,” Redd said.Redd says there was a lot of support for the changes, but there was also a lot of pushback. And some residents say they still haven’t witnessed major changes with the new system -- like Keith Benson, who was born and raised in the area. He’s also the president of the Camden Education Association.“If you’re a community police department, you should be required to live where you’re serving,” Benson said.Benson says he'd like to see residency requirements for officers be reestablished. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau show more than 90% of Camden identifies as either black or Latino - and Benson says he believes the police force should mirror that. Right now, about half the force is white. However, Benson says more needs to be done to have an effective and trustworthy police force. He says going out into the community is part of it, but actually being a friendly member of the community and looking non-threatening is another.“When you recognize – you know you have access to social media – you see cops killing people and you see this big gun hanging on this cop’s hip that at any moment they can reach on you. That makes you feel a certain way as a civilian. Specifically, if you’re a person of color in a neighborhood like this,” Benson said.George Floyd’s death has put the topic of police reform in the spotlight.“We’re not law enforcement officers, we’re public servants. Our job is not just to enforce the law, it’s to serve the people," Lt. Rodriguez said. "And to see someone murdered by that person that took that oath is very sickening and disgusting. And it hurt me as a person – not as an officer – as a person it really hurt me to see that happen because I have brown skin and that could have been me. I get pulled over by police and get treated a certain way until they find out I’m a police officer.”David M. Kennedy is a professor of criminal justice at John Jay College and the Director of the National Network for Safe Communities.“When it comes to policing and public safety, I really think the world just changed,” Kennedy said.Kennedy says he’s been paying close attention to the Camden situation for quite a while, and he thinks it’s time for other places across the U.S. to consider a change.“People are not going to tolerate the kind of policing that many of them have been having,” Kennedy said.Even though Former Mayor Dana Redd says the restructuring of police was mostly a financial decision, the nation is now looking to it as a potential blueprint for community-based policing.“What Camden did, do you think that would be a good step for Minneapolis moving forward?” Reporter Elizabeth Ruiz asked.“That’s a question for the people of Minneapolis," Kennedy said. "If it’s going to be legitimate, it has to be welcome and authentic in the eyes of the public.”Kennedy says in order to defund and disband a police department and build something new, law enforcement has to gain people's trust.“Institutions that have done harm need to acknowledge that harm. They need to be honest about it. They need to engage with those who have been harmed in a way that those people find authentic,” Kennedy said.Lt. Rodriguez says he stands with those who feel hurt and violated by the death of George Floyd.He says he believes in the system they’ve created in Camden and hopes police officers all over will work harder to connect with the communities they serve.“We’ve worked so hard with the community to build that trust and that confidence," Lt. Rodriguez said. "That they can reach out to us that their voices are being heard. When something so unfortunate and so terrible happens like it did to Mr. Floyd, it really stains the badge.” 5677
