Ed King, who co-wrote the Lynyrd Skynyrd hit "Sweet Home Alabama," the tune with the classic riff that became a Southern rock anthem, has died. The retired guitarist died Wednesday at his home in Nashville, according to his Facebook page. The post did not include a cause of death or King's age.King was a member of the Florida band in its early days. He left before a 1977 plane crash in Mississippi that killed three members of the group and later rejoined for a reunion tour, according to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.King was one of three writers of "Sweet Home Alabama," which was released on the album "Second Helping" in April 1974, according to Rolling Stone. The rollicking track begins with King counting "1-2-3" before the guitar lick that generations have come to know as a tribute to the state of Alabama."When we were out in the country driving all the time, we would listen to the radio. Neil Young had 'Southern Man,' and it was kind of cutting the South down. And so Ronnie (Van Zant) just said, 'We need to show people how the real Alabama is,' " guitarist and founder member Gary Rossington told Garden & Gun in 2015."It wasn't cutting him down," Rossington said of Young. "It was cutting the song he wrote about the South down. Ronnie painted a picture everyone liked. Because no matter where you're from, sweet home Alabama or sweet home Florida or sweet home Arkansas, you can relate."The iconic song was born in a practice session.Rossington told Garden & Gun?he kept playing a riff over and over while they waited for everyone to arrive for rehearsal."Ronnie and I were sitting there, and he kept saying, 'play that again,' " Rossington said in the 2015 article. "Then Ronnie wrote the lyrics and Ed [King] and I wrote the music."Four days later, the group recorded the hit, according to The Birmingham News."I am mainly known as the one who verbally counted off 'Sweet Home Alabama,' then played the infamous Stratocaster riff as well as the solos in that tune," King said, according to the newspaper."I am the luckiest guitar player that ever lived. Who could've guessed that song would pay the rent for over 30 years?"The band was named after a Jacksonville, Florida, high school gym teacher who was their nemesis. The teacher's name was spelled differently, Rossington told CNN. The group, who liked the Beatles at the time and just wanted to be a band, often got in trouble in gym class because of their long hair, Rossington said.On Thursday, tributes poured in for King.Rossington tweeted: "Ed was our brother, and a great Songwriter and Guitar player. I know he will be reunited with the rest of the boys in Rock & Roll Heaven."Randy Bachman with Bachman-Turner Overdrive said King "wrote the anthem of the south with Sweet Home Alabama and was such a talented guitarist."County music legend Charlie Daniels said King "played so many of the classic guitar parts on their early records.""Rest in peace Ed, you left behind some great riffs Buddy," Daniels wrote.King had been retired since 1996, according to his Facebook page.He once played the opening lick from "Sweet Home Alabama" for CNN's Jake Tapper, then with VH1 News. Tapper's interview with King in Nashville featured in the 2002 documentary "Lynyrd Skynyrd's UnCivil War.""Is there something unusual about the lick?" Tapper asked, during the interview.King stopped playing his red and black guitar and gave a classic answer."I think the tone of the guitar kinda, like, sounds like Alabama." 3538

Donald Trump Jr. is seeking to scale back his Secret Service protection, four sources familiar with Trump Jr.'s Secret Service protection confirmed Monday. The President's eldest son previously requested to travel without protection during a family trip to Nassau, Bahamas, in late June, a move reluctantly accepted by the Secret Service. Trump Jr. and his family traveled aboard a yacht for several days without his full detail, CNN has learned. A law enforcement source stressed the request to pull back on protection did not come from the agency. The Secret Service strongly pushed back on Trump Jr.'s request to waive protection for the Bahamas trip, according to two sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, but it was "demanded" by Trump Jr. himself. Now, the President's eldest son has asked that his full-time protection end, as well. The Secret Service would not confirm the request."To ensure the safety and security of our protectees and their families we will not confirm who is currently receiving Secret Service protection," a Secret Service spokesperson told CNN.A spokesperson for both Trump Jr. and the White House did not immediately respond to CNN's requests for comment on Trump Jr.'s request.A decision to waive full-time protection is not unprecedented; Ron Reagan ultimately declined Secret Service protection during his father's second term as president. It's unclear whether full-time protection for Trump Jr. has ended.Trump Jr. is authorized, but not required by law, to have Secret Service protection as an immediate family member of the President. The decision comes as the Secret Service is already stretched thin, due in part to the large size of the Trump family. The source added that leaving Trump Jr. unprotected would be a "huge risk," saying: "It's just a stupid decision."The family has expressed a desire for more privacy and personal space, one of the sources said.Earlier this year, two Secret Service agents faced an internal investigation over alleged conduct while they protected one of Donald Trump Jr.'s children. The agents allegedly took a picture of a child sleeping in the Secret Service vehicle, according to people familiar with the matter.Donald Trump Jr. and his brother Eric are longtime supporters of the Secret Service, with a deep history and many friendships dating back years before their father's presidency. Both of Trump's adult sons have also quietly financially supported training initiatives and counterterrorism training through different organizations. 2538

EL CAJON (CNS) - A man who drove drunk and at high speed down a curving Campo roadway, causing a crash that killed his two passengers, was convicted Wednesday of second-degree murder and other charges.Ryan Renz, 26, faces up to 30 years to life behind bars when he is sentenced Dec. 20 for the Jan. 25, 2017, crash that killed his friends, 23-year- old Johnny Ray Meyer Jr. and 26-year-old Dillon Cody Wiltfong.Prosecutors said Renz -- who was on probation and driving on a suspended license due to a prior DUI conviction -- was drunk when he crashed Wiltfong's Volkswagen Jetta into a tree on Buckman Springs Road, near Lake Morena Drive, in the evening hours of Jan. 25.RELATED: Campo crash leaves two dead, driver facing chargesOne of the victims was ejected and the other was trapped inside the vehicle. Renz suffered minor injuries.Deputy District Attorney Laura Evans said Renz and the victims drank throughout the afternoon of Jan. 25 before the defendant got behind the wheel and drove somewhere between 85 to 96 mph down Buckman Springs Road, then crashed the Jetta into an oak tree. The passenger's side of the sedan -- where both Meyer and Wiltfong were sitting -- took the brunt of the crash, according to the prosecutor.Evans said the high speed of the Jetta caught the attention of Border Patrol officers stationed near the scene, some of whom pursued the sedan, but were unable to stop it before the crash. Officers arrived to a "very violent scene," in which the Jetta was found overturned and on fire, Evans said.Mechanical issues were ruled out as a potential cause of the crash by California Highway Patrol investigators, according to the prosecutor. 1677

Editor's note: This article contains details and information about an ongoing case that some people may find disturbing.New court documents reveal new evidence behind the search at Chad Daybell's Idaho home, which led to the discovery of the bodies of 7-year-old JJ Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan.JJ and Tylee were reported missing in late 2019. Their remains were found in Rexburg, Idaho, earlier this month on property owned by Daybell, their stepfather. The children's mother, Lori Daybell (née Vallow), was arrested in connection with their disappearance earlier this year.According to the probable cause affidavit for Daybell's arrest, the remains of one child was found wrapped in plastic and sealed with duct tape. The other was burned and buried next to a pet cemetery on the property. The documents also state that in the days before JJ's and Tylee's disappearance, Lori Daybell referred to her children as "zombies" in a conversation with a friend.Lori Daybell said part of her and her husband's religious beliefs was a mission to "rid the world of zombies."The document states that a "zombie refers to an individual whose mortal spirit has left their body and that their body is now the host of another spirit."Lori Daybell told a friend that JJ had become a zombie, loved Satan, and that the boy's "an increased vocabulary" was also evidence that JJ was a zombie. That same friend observed JJ's behavior and noted that it was the same as she had always seen him.TIMELINE: Investigation into Lori Daybell, disappearance of JJ Vallow and Tylee RyanCourt documents also state that GPS tracking put Lori Daybell's brother, Alex Cox, on Chad Daybell's property near the burial sites on Sept. 9 — one day after JJ and Tylee was last seen.Cox later died on Dec. 11. Authorities have since determined Cox's death was of natural causes. On the day officers searched Chad Daybell's home on June 9, he was seen observing officers conduct the search. When officers found the remains, he attempted to drive away and was later caught. Both Lori and Chad Daybell are now behind bars. However, neither has been charged with murder. To read the full probable cause statement, click here. This story was originally published by KNXV in Phoenix. 2244
