SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- California is desperately searching for nurses, doctors and other medical staff, perhaps from as far away as Australia, as the coronavirus surge pushes hospitals to the breaking point. With many of the state's hospitals running out of capacity to treat the severest cases, the state has brought in and deployed more than 500 temporary medical staff members, but it needs a total of 3,000.The staffing shortage in California comes as a surge of COVID-19 cases across the U.S. has led to a nationwide demand for contracted medical workers, particularly nurses with critical care expertise. 616

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A new website from the City of San Diego's Planning Department is asking residents to help re-imagine the Clairemont neighborhood.Clairemontplan.org is like an online public meeting, where people can look at different ideas for adding housing and retail to the neighborhood and weigh in on which ones they like the most."We understand not everyone can make an in-person meeting at the time we schedule it for or attend a city council hearing in the middle of the day," says City Planning Director Mike Hansen. As MTS builds a new trolley line through Clairemont along the I-5, the area is coming up with a new community plan. The city wants to add housing and retail to the area to help meet new goals for housing, transportation and climate change. To do that, they're looking to add density to the neighborhood. The website identifies eight areas of Clairemont that could be redeveloped. It asks users to make changes to at least three areas while adding 5,000 new homes. At least 40% of the houses need to be near the trolley. To help, it offers basic renderings of what different development could look like in each neighborhood."We wanted to try to find something that allowed people to get into the weeds if they wanted to," says Tait Galloway, the Program Manager who helped design the website. "But, this still allows them to do it within 15-20 minutes."The website will be available until March 14th. After that, the answers will be collected and used as the city devises the new Clairemont Community Plan. They hope to present it by the end of 2020.City leaders hope this will become a template for other neighborhoods and a way to get more people involved in the process. San Diego, Calif. (KGTV) - The PGA Tour rolled into La Jolla Monday to prepare for this week's Farmers Insurance Open. Players will have to quickly adjust to the first major renovation at the famed South Course in more than a decade."I can't wait to see them play it and see what their scores are and try to hear some of their comments," Scott Bentley, who helps oversee the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Golf Division, said while giving 10News a tour of the changes Monday ahead of the tournment.Respected course designer Rees Jones, who helmed the last major renovation to Torrey Pines in 2001, examined advanced analytical data from the 2019 tournament, studying where the pros are hitting their shots. Jones used that information to recommend changes, moving several bunkers to locations that will force players to make a difficult strategic decision on how to approach the hole. Jones also worked to bring Torrey Pines' cliffs and canyons closer to the action, bringing them more into play.RELATED: Tiger Woods commits to play San Diego's 2020 Farmers Insurance OpenAs one of the few world class courses that is municipally owned and operated, Bentley said it's a balancing act to make the course challenging for the world's top players, including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, while still making the course playable and enjoyable for the thousands of San Diegans and visitors who play Torrey Pines each year. "We tried to keep the changes not too dramatic because we do have all that public play and our residents visitors come here...we didn't want to make it too crazy," said Bentley.Other changes include significant modifications to the course's drainage and irrigation system, which will help use water more efficiently. 1748

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Pacific Gas & Electric says it may cut power to some 1 million people this weekend in central and Northern California, which could see the most dangerous fire weather of the season. PG&E says it could begin safety shutoffs Sunday morning as gusts and low humidity ramp up the risk of downing power lines and sparking massive fires in tinder-dry brush. The shutoffs in 38 counties could last into Tuesday. PG&E equipment has been blamed for sparking some of the most devastating fires in recent years, including a 2018 blaze in Butte County that killed 85 people. This year, wildfires already have destroyed some 9,200 buildings and killed 31 people.Northern California officials are urging residents to leave homes in the hills, secure backyard furniture and other loose items and have an evacuation plan ready ahead of powerful winds that could lead to widespread electricity outages. 927
