SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The director of California's unemployment benefits department, Sharon Hilliard, said she will retire at the end of the year. The announcement Friday comes after the agency has been overwhelmed by more than 15 million claims during the coronavirus pandemic. The agency has a backlog of more than 900,000 people still waiting to receive benefits. Hilliard has said the backlog won't be cleared until the end of January. California Labor and Workforce Development Agency Secretary Julie A. Sue praised Hilliard for helping reset the agency's culture. (AP) — California Democratic Party Chairman Eric Bauman announced Thursday that he plans to resign, following a cascade of sexual harassment allegations that emerged against him in recent days.Bauman's decision came hours after Governor-elect Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, called for the embattled chairman to step aside. "I look forward to putting these allegations behind us and moving forward as unified Democrats."An outside investigator is looking into the claims. Other California Democrats have already called for Bauman to be replaced, including U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna and the Orange County Young Democrats.A series of sexual misconduct allegations against lawmakers, lobbyists and others in politics rocked California's political world late last year, at the height of the #MeToo movement.
