Ananya Vinay, the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion, has had quite a year.It started with confetti cannons on stage after she spelled "marocain" correctly. Then she made the rounds: talk shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live and other media appearances.She rode in a limo to the Golden State Warriors' final basketball game of last season, and got to see the trophy presentation when her team won the championship."It was really exciting," she said.She also toured the Google campus, got a rally at her school and had a day named in her honor by the governor of California. It was all a big surprise, she said.And she's picked up other hobbies, too: she made it to the National Science Bowl, the state science fair and competed in Mathcounts.She also wants to write more and join the forensics team. And she's started a website and tutors some spellers.A lot of it comes from her Bee experience."It really gives you a lot of confidence," Ananya said. "It gives you a lot of knowledge about the world."Ananya carried the trophy in to the opening ceremony Monday night and kicked off the Bee."I'm really glad to be back; I have a lot of friends here," she said. An Ohio couple was stunned to find a Nazi symbol on a pizza they picked up from Little Caesars Pizza Saturday night.Jason Laska was running an errand for his wife and picked up a pizza from the Little Caesars in Brook Park.“I walked in. I said, ‘What do you guys have left?’ And they said a pepperoni and a cheese and I said ‘give me the pepperoni,’” Laska said.He told WEWS he paid for the grab-and-go pizza but didn’t look inside the box until he got home, but his wife said she was disgusted to find pepperonis carefully arranged in the shape of a backward swastika. ANAHEIM (CNS) - Orange County health officials are investigating 12 cases of Legionnaire's disease among people who traveled to, resided in, or worked in Anaheim during the month of September.  The discovery has led to the shutdown of two cooling towers at Disneyland, which nine of the 12 people visited during September.  "On October 27, 2017, when the Disneyland Park was identified as a common location of eight (8) cases, HCA contacted the Disney organization and set up site visits at the Park to assess potential sources. Since that time, HCA staff have visited Park properties and worked with Disney to identify potential sources of Legionella," said Jessica Good, spokeswoman for the Orange County Health Agency."On November 3, 2017, Disney reported to HCA that records provided by a contractor indicated that (as part of their quarterly, routine testing) elevated levels of Legionella had been identified in (two of 18) cooling towers on October 2, 2017 and treated/disinfected by the contractor on October 4, 2017. Neither Disney nor the contractor would have been aware of the human cases at that time."On November 1, 2017, Disney had the towers taken out of service. They report having performed subsequent testing and disinfection and brought the towers back into service November 5, 2017. Test results will not be known for approximately 10-14 days."Because of the existence of human illness and the inability to assure the cooling towers are clear of Legionella bacteria until test results are known, the County of Orange Health Officer issued a Health Officer's Order on 11/8/17 requiring that Disney take the towers out of service until they are verified to be free from contamination, at which time the Health Officer will lift the order Disney independently made the determination to take the towers out of operation on 11/7/17, after meeting with HCA staff but prior to the order."The 12 cases range in age from 52 to 94, Good said. Ten of the 12 were hospitalized and one person with additional health issues died. That person did not visit Disneyland, she said.There is no known ongoing risk associated with the outbreak, according to Good.Health agency officials say the disease is becoming more common, citing 55 reports of Legionella disease in Orange County through October 2017, compared with 53 for the entire year of 2016 and 33 in 2015.Officials say Legionella, at low levels, poses no threat to humans and is commonly found in human-made water systems. It becomes problematic when it is in large quantities, typically due to stagnant or improperly sanitized spas and water systems.When Legionella bacterial levels are high, it can be transmitted through inhalation of contaminated water vapor. Typical sources are improperly sanitized spas; indoor and outdoor fountains, showers, and cooling towers (which emit water vapor into the air) used as part of air conditioning systems in large spaces such as hospitals, hotels, entertainment venues, etc.Symptoms of legionellosis develop 2-10 days after exposure, and include fever, chills, cough, muscle aches, and headaches. Infected persons often have pneumonia and may need to be hospitalized. It is treated with antibiotics, which can improve symptoms and shorten the length of illness.Persons with legionellosis are not infectious; the infection is not spread from person to person.Those most at risk of getting sick from Legionella infection include people who are smokers, have chronic lung disease or weak immune systems, and people over the age of 65.   3561

An Oceanside City Councilman is proposing a tax credit for companies who hire Oceanside residents and pay them at least ,000 a year.Councilman Christopher Rodriguez says he wants to reward Oceanside businesses who hire locally. The proposal, which the City Council will initially discuss Wednesday, would pay Oceanside companies ,500 for each new hire who lives in Oceanside and is paid that minimum salary. "It's a big problem, housing affordability in North County," Rodriguez said. "North County, Coastal Oceanside, we're up and coming. It's more expensive to live here for sure."Rodriguez said his proposal is a starting point and that he is willing to move on the numbers based on council feedback. If there is support, city staff could analyze the proposal and return in 120 days with a concrete plan.Business groups such as the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce expressed support for the plan. Peter Rodriguez, an operations manager at Beachfront Only, a vacation rental property management firm, said the credit could help his company. He says Beachfront Only often hires Oceanside residents because they are close to most of their properties. The company has two openings that pay about ,000 a year. (AP) — A filly broke both front legs at the end of a workout on the main dirt track at Santa Anita and was euthanized on Thursday, becoming the 22nd horse to suffer catastrophic injuries since Dec. 26.Trainer and owner David Bernstein said the 3-year-old filly named Princess Lili B broke down just past the finish line after a half-mile workout.Bernstein told KTLA-TV that Princess Lili B apparently took a step as she changed leads, which led to her breaking her left ankle and then her right ankle. A lead change refers to which set of legs, left or right, leads or advances forward when a horse is galloping."She was always very sound and we've never had a problem with her," Bernstein said in the interview. "We didn't have to train her on any medication. She's just a lovely filly to be around."Bernstein said the filly's exercise rider didn't indicate any problem with the dirt surface."I think it's one of those things that happens, sadly enough," the trainer told KTLA.Bernstein said he wouldn't hesitate to train another horse on Santa Anita's surface again."I know they've done the best job they can possibly do," he said. "They're hired a number of great experts to handle this surface."Santa Anita had reopened its main track for limited workouts on Monday, with horses limited to jogging and galloping while the surface was monitored for any irregularities that may have caused the deaths of 22 horses since the winter meet began on Dec. 26.This week's workouts were the first conducted under the track's new training protocols, which include two veterinarians observing each horse going to and from the track. 1648
