In just a few days, New York could be the first state in the country to ban declawing cats, unless it's for medical reasons. Cities like Los Angeles and Denver already outlaw it. Dr. Aubrey Lavizzo, with Paw Project Colorado, stopped declawing cats years ago, and he helped lead the charge to banning it in Denver. “It's a mutilation,” he says. “Basically, partial digital amputation is an amputation without cost. That's a mutilation, so it's cruel for that reason.” That's why he's excited to hear New York might become the first state in the country to ban declawing. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has to sign the bill that would forbid declawing for "cosmetic or aesthetic reasons." If the bill becomes law, those who violate it could face a ,000 fine. “Finally it's going to happen, and once that happens, I think it will create a domino effect. I'm pretty sure it will,” says Dr. Lavizzo. The New York Veterinary Medical Society opposes the bill, arguing that declawing should be allowed "when the alternative is abandonment or euthanasia." The group released a statement, saying in part "cats that would lose their home if not declawed face a higher risk of euthanasia than if their owner were able to care for them." However, Dr. Lavizzo says cat relinquishments have dropped 20 percent in Denver since the ban. “I'm not saying that's connected, but it does say that you know people are not relinquishing your cats because he can't get them declawed in Denver,” Dr. Lavizzo says. New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have added three new states to the tri-state travel advisory as more areas across the nation see an uptick in coronavirus cases.The advisory requires travelers from certain states hit hard by COVID-19 to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in the tri-state area.New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo first announced Tuesday that Delaware, Kansas and Oklahoma will now join the growing list. A now-5-year-old pit bull is back home with its owner after disappearing two-and-a-half years ago."This is a picture of her on the couch on Christmas," said Savannah Rastrelli, as she reminisced about her dog, Sugar. "This was in 2016."Rastrelli said one day after roaming their 45-acre lot, Sugar never returned."I posted on Martin County lost and found pets, lost and found pets of the Treasure Coast," said Rastrelli.Nobody ever answered the plea for help until this week, when the Port St. Lucie Police Department received a call of a stray dog.The dog was wandering around the 1400 block of Southwest Del Rio Boulevard, more than 20 miles from where Sugar disappeared."It really is remarkable," said Port St. Lucie police Sgt. Keith Boham.Boham said animal control officers were able to scan Sugar's microchip and identify the owner. Derek Lowe "With a microchip, we have the ability to scan the dog or pet and locate you in the event that your animal goes missing," said Boham.Now reunited with her long-lost furry friend, Rastrelli said their story is proof that even when all hope is lost, it can still be found."I'm really happy we were able to get that call," said Rastrelli. The Cleveland Indians are moving forward in the process to examine and possibly change the team name and will be meeting with Native American leaders to help determine the best path forward.Indians owner Paul Dolan announced Thursday that as part of the organization's continuous efforts to discuss the team name, there have been productive meetings earlier this week with manager Terry Francona and numerous players to discuss the name, as well as social justice and racial equality issues.To continue examining the best path forward, the organization said it will be engaging with Native American leaders to “better understand their perspectives,” in regards to the team name.The organization will also hold discussions with civic leaders and said it will continue to listen to the opinions and perspectives of players, fans, partners and employees.“We feel a real sense of urgency to discuss these perspectives with key stakeholders while also taking the time needed to ensure those conversations are inclusive and meaningful,” Dolan said. “We will continue to share periodic updates as we make progress.
