SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new technology platform launched this week is making it easier for restaurants, hotels, and caterers to donate food to those facing hunger in San Diego County.The new platform, MealConnect, was unveiled by Feeding San Diego. CEO Vince Hall says the free platform will help rescue the more than 14 million pounds of food going into San Diego landfills every year. "This is an issue that is compelling, it is serious, and it is urgent because hunger is debilitating," said Hall. Restaurants and food service providers use the MealConnect app to submit a food donation. It's then picked up by a volunteer and delivered to a nearby charity. Nancy Kane is one of the first San Diego volunteers to take part in the program. "It's flexible, it's not that hard to do, I can do it on my own time. I love it; it's one more thing I can do to make a difference," said Kane.Volunteers receive training and equipment to ensure food is delivered safely. They can choose their delivery hours and can accept or decline requests via text message. MealConnect enables food donors of all sizes, such as hotels, meeting and event planners, restaurants, farmers market vendors, and convenience stores to post surplus food to the system.Feeding San Diego received a ,500 grant from the Walmart Foundation to support the launch of MealConnect in San Diego County. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A handful of San Diego County fire departments have sent crews across the state to help with the Woolsey and Camp Fires. But Cal Fire officials tell 10News they're making sure that enough resources are left behind to cover any emergencies that happen here."We have an obligation here to make sure we keep enough strategic reserve to stay safe in San Diego," says Cal Fire Battalion Chief Jon Heggie.Through a process called "Mutual Aid," Heggie says Cal Fire sent three strike teams, consisting of 15 engines, to help around the state. That leaves 32 engines in San Diego. Heggie says those engines are placed around the county ready to pounce on any fires that spring up."The conditions they've seen up there are very similar to what we're seeing right now," says Heggie. But, he added that all time off had been canceled for Cal Fire employees while San Diego is in a Red Flag Warning."Everyone from the Chief down to the firefighters, they're staying in a heightened state of readiness," he says. "We'll never exceed those thresholds to make sure that we have enough adequate resources available for any fire that starts here in San Diego."Cal Fire's ability to respond quickly was put to the test Monday, when a house fire erupted in Ramona. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A runaway boat became lodged on rocks after taking off while the owner was trying to dock the vessel Monday afternoon.Captain Tony Olson with TowBoatUS San Diego said a man sailing from Harbor Island was trying to dock at Shelter Island when the boat took off.According to Olson, the man was trying to tie the boat off with the sail partially up and the motor running, causing it to take off without him.The 35-foot vessel became lodged on rocks at the Naval Base.It took a while for the boat to become dislodged. Olson says there doesn’t appear to be any major damage to the vessel.Olson noted that this is one of several boats that ran aground Monday.A 19-foot vessel, pictured below, also smashed into rocks at the foot of Point Loma. The Coast Guard warned people traveling through marine channel 16 of the boat that ran aground.  872

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man who admitted to several "Peeping Tom" instances in the Pacific Beach area was sentenced Wednesday.James Wayne Hubbard, 48, was sentenced to 364 days in jail for the series of incidents between Sept. 11 and Oct. 12.Hubbard pleaded guilty to three counts of peeping and prowling as part of a plea deal. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report from the Auto Club ranks San Diego as the top travel destination for Southern Californians this Labor Day weekend.According to the report, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Grand Canyon and Santa Barbara also rank among top travel destinations for Southern Californians. The Auto Club is also warning San Diegans not to drink and drive. According to AAA, 31 people were injured in DUI-related crashes last year over Labor Day weekend.Statewide, eight people were killed in DUI crashes last year. “While alcohol-related crash fatalities have dropped in the last three years over this holiday, injuries have risen,” said Auto Club Traffic Safety Manager Anita Lorz Villagrana.“We want to remind everyone to make a plan before celebrating – use a rideshare service, stay at a hotel or someone’s home, or designate a sober driver.
