At a White House briefing on Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence said that the government will have 1.5 million coronavirus tests ready to distribute this week after bipartisan criticism was levied on the government's ability to distribute tests. Pence added that tests are available in all 50 states, giving doctors the ability to better determine whether patients have been sickened with coronavirus. These tests will go to hospitals and labs at state universities. The eventual goal is to make the tests accessible more broadly. "Our objective is to make tests available broadly to the American public," Pence said. "We want to make sure the American people can go to their doctor, can go to the local MedCheck or CVS, and obtain access to coronavirus (tests)."On Tuesday, members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee expressed frustration with the distribution of tests. "I'm sure across the nation are really scared," Sen. Patty Murray said at Tuesday's hearing. "I'm hearing from people who are sick who want to get tested, are not being told where to go. I'm hearing that even when people do get tested and it's very few so far, the results are taking way longer to get back to them. "The administration has had months to prepare for this and it is unacceptable that people in my state and nationwide can't even get an answer as to whether or not they are infected."The announcement comes as the death toll nationwide is up to 11 from coronavirus. It also comes as United Airlines announced that it is cutting back the number of domestic and international flights. Administration officials said that elderly and those with pre-existing conditions should reconsider elective travel. Pence and other members of the coronavirus task force said for the general population, the risk posed by coronavirus is low. 1852

Are selfie photographs spurring an increase in deaths at Grand Canyon National Park? Not necessarily. In fact, more deaths at the park occur from medical issues and heat-related woes than falls that occur while taking photos. However, a 67-year-old man died Wednesday after falling over the edge of the Grand Canyon. It is not clear what led him to fall. His death is the third at the popular tourist destination in eight days. The visitor fell Wednesday near the Yavapai Geology Museum, which is on the South Rim in Grand Canyon Village, according to the National Park Service.Grand Canyon National Park rangers responded and found the man's body about 400 feet below the rim. Helicopter and technical rescue teams recovered the body and park service officials are investigating.Last week, two people died while visiting the canyon. On Thursday, a man from Hong Kong was taking pictures at an overlook when he slipped and fell, according to the Grand Canyon West. The man, who was in his late 50s, was part of a tour group visiting the Eagle Point observation area at Grand Canyon West and was apparently taking a selfie, according to David Leibowitz, a spokesman for Eagle Point."The thoughts and prayers of every Grand Canyon West employee remain with the loved ones of this individual and the members of the tour group," the tourist destination said in a statement. The first of the three deaths was not the result of a fall, according to Vanessa Ceja-Cervantes, a spokeswoman for the Grand Canyon National Park. She said the victim was a foreign national and that the body was found March 26 in a forested area south of the South Rim Village area of the park. The park service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner are conducting an investigation."On average, there about 12 fatalities in the park per year, but a small percentage of those are from fatal falls," said Ceja-Cervantes. "The causes of those deaths range from heat, to drowning, to medical issues and more. High elevation plays a role in some of the fatalities." 2038

Businesses are making changes to workspaces to bring employees back safely, but there's a question of how much influence they can have over what you're doing outside of work. Some employers are implementing return to work surveys that will ask if you've been around somebody who's been exposed to COVID-19.A St. Louis County executive is pushing for companies there to ask workers if they've been social distancing outside of work, along with others they've been with. This comes after leaders there learned people traveled outside the city over Memorial Day and didn't do this.“The society for human resource management" tells us employers have to be careful,” said Amber Clayton with the Society for Human Resource Management. “It’s not very practical to have an employer actually monitoring someone's social media and you don't want to make an assumption either that someone is not social distancing just because you heard about it or saw it in a picture. They may have been with immediate family members that they've been in the house with for a very long time.”But she says if employers know for a fact you haven't been social distancing and have been exposed to COVID-19, they can require you to work from home or to self-quarantine for 14 days. You may not get paid while you're self-quarantining, though. If your boss asks you what you're doing for the weekend, it's really up to you if you want to share this information.Employers are providing workers with the CDC guidelines about social distancing and wearing masks to keep them safe. But then, it's really up to you.“The employers and the employees need to trust one another, and employees should be letting their employers know if they've been exposed even if there hasn't been an implementation of a survey in place,” said Clayton. “They should let their employers know if they're sick, if they're not feeling well, so that they can stay home or leave work if they actually came into work. There are "lifestyle discrimination" or "off duty conduct laws" that protect you outside of work, if what you're doing is lawful. 2092
