Alyson McClaran is a photojournalist who has captured many of the raw moments and emotions in 2020, including a photo of nurses blocking protestors in Colorado earlier this year.“The nurse kind of put his hands out,” McClaran said. “Then, the gentleman got in his face and the nurse just looked away from him and ignored him.”That photo would end up gaining international attention. “Within 30 minutes, I had thousands of shares,” she said. And for good reason.“I remember when I first saw it, it was really striking,” Hahrie Han, professor of political science at Johns Hopkins University, said. “It sort of felt like it brought together a lot of the complex streams of conflict and tension that we were having to grapple with as a society.”Han was chosen as a curator for a COVID-19 time capsule created by the non-profit Social Science Research Council, or SSRC. She chose McClaran’s photo.“The act of both people in that picture was an act of trying to make change in some way,” she said. “The people in the cars who are protesting are protesting against the shutdown order and they're using their right to free assembly and free speech to voice their concern. And likewise, the healthcare worker is standing up against that saying, 'No, we want people to stay home because that's how you’re going to protect us. That's how we are going to protect each other.'”As we close out this dynamic year, the SSRC decided to create this time capsule, not only for future social researchers but for the general public, as a reflection on 2020.The content ranges from ironic toilet paper shortage-related memes to images of hope and human connection.“They were like instant artifacts of that moment and there were a lot of those moments,” Alexa Dietrich, program director at the Social Science Research Council, said. “I believe it has accomplished a set of goals in the sense that bringing this type of analysis and perspective to much broader audiences.”Dietrich said the capsule is meant to bring about ongoing reflection, just as these curators had to do when coming up with their selections to put in the project.“That image I chose is the sort of 'how would you like to pay?' sign you'd see at any retail store or restaurant. But instead of having just the Visa, Mastercard, or Amex, it also has a roll of toilet paper,” said Bill Maurer, professor of anthropology and law at UC Irvine and another curator for the time capsule. “It really spoke to things like the concerns over hoarding that were taking place early on the pandemic, particularly around toilet paper. But, then, also that broader philosophical question, when you're in a global pandemic and there is an economic shutdown, what really is valuable anymore?”The time capsule is part of a bigger project the SSRC is putting together, free of use, to offer a range of perspectives and thoughts on the past year. “We’re not just delivering, we’re also really trying to learn and promote conversations,” Dietrich said.“The world is just in this moment of dynamism and flux and so to take this snapshot this moment in time, to think about what we want to capture and to create a historical record for future generations, I think is really important,” Han said. 3225

Whenever we’re given a problem, people come up with a solution," says Charles Abell with the U.S. Small Business Association.Abell says new tech companies are also thriving because it's a business that can be run remotely."You see so many new tech businesses starting up and that’s a great thing. There's a lot of need for medical tech, so people are coming up with new apps on how do we track our area with the COVID-19 virus," says Abell.He says it can be tough for some people who are finding themselves out of work and an expert in just one industry to suddenly pivot to another. The SBA says some are turning their hobbies into businesses."They have a great sauce or they have a great product that they can make at home and they can use Amazon and do the shipping services to market their products. So, I think a lot of people are being very experimental right now," says Abell.People who focus on delivery services are also finding business is booming. And many of these businesses are benefiting from easier access to loans."This is an amazing time right now. A lot of people are refinancing their homes and getting the lowest interest rate possible. Well, guess what, starting your business is a very similar process," says Abell.The key right now for people who are thinking of starting a brand new business is to think through your plan and funding needs. And make sure the business can thrive in the current state of our economy."It's good that they have a business plan and have someone helping them with the business plan to make sure it's sustainable," says Abell.The SBA has free tools available to potential, new and longtime business owners on their website. (KGTV) - Neighbors are fearful and outraged at the idea a sexual predator could move in next door after running into a detective investigating the neighborhood.Tucked away in Alpine Heights is a quiet sprawling neighborhood with multiple cul-de-sacs."Most people don't even know we're here," three decade resident Gerry Brewster said.David Csik and his wife Katie moved in two years ago and describe the area as a kid's dream, filled with block parties, and get-togethers around the BBQ or the pool. They have two kids, a toddler son, and 6-month old baby girl."We moved to Alpine for the community and to send our children to the schools out here; it's all we've ever wanted," Katie said.December 14th, they say a neighbor approached someone walking around a vacant property next door and found out she was an investigator for the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Task Force (SAFE). "They're writing what they call a factual site assessment which they submit to the courts and they're looking to place a sexually violent predator right down the street," David said they were shocked. Katie was ready to get going, "my initial thought was we have to move."The neighborhood jumped into action, writing stacks of concerned letters to their representatives and investigators with the SAFE Task Force.Supervisor Dianne Jacob responded to their emails, saying in part, "At this time, the County has not been made aware of any recommendation to place a SVP at this location. When a SVP is being proposed for conditional release from a state hospital, a public notification is provided by law enforcement and a court hearing takes place before a SVP is placed in the community. I have consistently stood with the community in opposition and will continue to oppose the release of any SVP into our neighborhoods."She said in the email she also contacted the Attorney General and is waiting to hear back.The neighbors did not wait. They created a map showing dozens of children who either live in the vicinity or visit their grandparents daily. After sending the letters, and after SAFE conducted their investigation, the District Attorney did not take this address to court as a possibility for a reformed sexual predator.It was a relief to parents. "I would never have slept at night knowing someone like that was around here," Katie said.While this particular case was thrown out, neighbors want a secure future."What we want to see is this property off the map out of their database," David said.The San Diego District Attorney's website says, "The Department of State Hospitals reviews all possible housing locations within the county and recommends a specific placement to the court." The department states, "Staff examines existing searches for properties that were previously identified. Such information is used only as a starting point. Staff uses many resources to find potential properties for rent including review of newspaper and Craigslist advertisements; visiting local real estate offices and even, driving through neighborhoods in search of "For Rent" signs."10News reached out to the department to see if this house has been removed from the database or how that could happen, and they said they would get back to us Friday. 3259
