INDIANAPOLIS — In a rematch from four years ago, Democrat J.D. Ford beat Republican incumbent state Senator Mike Delph.As of Wednesday morning, Ford had a six-point lead on Delph for Indiana's Senate District 29.Ford is the first openly gay person elected to the Indiana General Assembly. "I think it's really time for us LGBTQ+ Hoosiers to have a voice in our General Assembly," Ford said.In 2014, Ford lost to Delph by about 2,300 votes for the District 29 Senate seat. Delph had been serving in the Indiana state Senate since 2005. In November 2017, he was sent to Puerto Rico to help with the recovery from Hurricane Maria. In 2014, Delph tweeted his frustration about a delayed vote on a gay marriage ban. In hopes of boosting international travel, American Airlines said it will begin offering coronavirus testing on some international flights leaving Miami, as well as flights to Hawaii out of Dallas.In cooperation with the governments of Jamaica and the Bahamas, American Airlines will be testing passengers for the coronavirus before flights out of Miami starting next month.The airline said that flights from Miami to Jamaica will allow for Jamaica residents to take a test, which will allow for a 14-day mandatory quarantine to be waved if the test comes back negative. The goal of the program is to eventually open the country to US citizens looking for a getaway.American Airlines said coronavirus testing will also be available for those flying from Miami to the Bahamas. Details of that program are still being worked out.Preflight testing will also be available for those flying from Dallas to Hawaii. The program will begin Oct. 15, and allow travelers three options: In at-home test, an in-person test at an urgent care, an or on-site rapid test available at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. Investigators are trying to determine whether an explosion early Tuesday at a FedEx facility outside San Antonio is connected to four explosions that have rattled the Austin, Texas, area this month.The most recent blast happened inside a FedEx facility in Schertz, Texas, FBI San Antonio spokeswoman Michelle Lee said. Schertz is a San Antonio suburb that is roughly an hour's drive southwest of Austin.One FedEx team member suffered minor injuries when a "single package exploded" at the ground sorting facility, company spokesman Jim McCluskey said Tuesday in a statement. An ATF spokeswoman earlier had said no injuries were reported."We are not providing any additional specific information about this package at this time," McCluskey said.Based on preliminary information gathered at the scene, Lee said there could be a connection with the four Austin explosions, which killed two people and injured four others over 17 days starting March 2. 956

But one driver lived to tell the tale after hitting a black bear head-on.Corbin Hardy, 27, was driving home to Westlake, Ohio from West Virginia on Friday when a black bear darted across the Ohio Turnpike."I was cruising down the middle lane, and at the very last second, I see a face, and it's the face of a bear. It was not even a 100 feet in front of me when it was crossing the lanes," said Hardy. "I only had time to lift my foot off the pedal."Hardy said the bear was large and the impact was so intense that the airbags deployed and his engine was left smoking.The bear was found on the left shoulder, around 100 yards from where it was initially hit."It was crazy. Nothing like hitting a deer. I was going 70 miles per hour, normal cruising speed and when I hit the bear, my car slowed down to around 50 mph. My head barely touched the airbag," Hardy said.He totaled the 2010 Subaru Legacy that he purchased when he was 18, but was, fortunately, able to walk away without a scratch. Even his cabin was untouched.Authorities told him that the bear most likely died on impact."If it had to die, I'm grateful it was sudden," Hardy said.Sightings of black bears in the Cleveland area have increased in the last several weeks. Last week, a black bear was spotted in Brecksville trying to get into a beehive.Several days later, landscapers in Pepper Pike spotted a small black bear before it ran off into the woods.Hardy credits his vehicle for letting him walk away without a scratch.
