TOKYO, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Japan Friday for the 18th Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), which is slated for Saturday and Sunday in Yokohama.Hu and his wife, Liu Yongqing, were welcomed by senior officials from the Japanese Foreign Ministry at Haneda airport.Chief Executive Donald Tsang of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Chinese Ambassador to Japan Cheng Yonghua were also present at the airport to greet Hu.President Hu, who flew into Tokyo from Seoul after attending the fifth summit of the Group of 20 (G20), was traveling by car to Yokohama.With the theme of "Change and Action," this year's Economic Leaders' Meeting will focus on the regional economic integration, a growth strategy for the Asia-Pacific region, human security, the economic and technical cooperation, and the assessment of achievement of Bogor Goals by APEC economies, according to the meeting agenda.The Bogor Goals call for free and open trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific by 2010 for industrialized economies and by 2020 for developing economies. These goals were adopted by leaders at their 1994 meeting in Bogor, Indonesia.President Hu will speak at the meeting to present China's view on these issues, Chinese officials said.Before the Economic Leaders' Meeting, the Chinese president will deliver a speech at the APEC CEO Summit, Chinese officials said.APEC is the premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region.Since its birth in 1989, APEC has grown to encompass 21 members spanning four continents, and represents the most economically dynamic region in the world, accounting for approximately 40 percent of the world's population, around 50 percent of world GDP and about 44 percent of world trade.APEC's 21 member economies are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, China's Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam.

BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, met with his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid in Beijing Monday and called for closer relations between the two nations and the two parliaments.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, said the growth of bilateral relations in recent years had yielded substantial benefits for the two peoples.Wu said China valued ties with the Maldives and was willing to maintain friendly exchanges and cooperation at all levels in an effort to expand political mutual trust and economic and trade cooperation in fields such as fisheries, tourism, and infrastructure construction.China would encourage Chinese companies to further participate in the Maldives' national construction and more Chinese tourists to visit the country, Wu said.Wu voiced his hope for stronger coordination between the two nations on international issues in order to build a relationship that would be a model for relations between big and small nations.Wu suggested the two legislatures promote dialogue and exchanges of views among members on successful experiences of national construction so as to inject new vitality to the development of bilateral relations.Shahid, speaker of the Maldivian People's Majlis, said the Maldivian people treasured the friendship of the Chinese people, and the rapid growth of the Chinese economy offered inspiration to developing countries, including the Maldives.Shahid pledged the Maldivian parliament would continue to play a constructive role in promoting bilateral relations.Shahid is leading a Maldivian parliamentary delegation to China at the invitation of Wu. SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- The death toll of a big fire that engulfed a high-rise building in downtown Shanghai had risen to 53 by 9:20 a.m. Tuesday, local authorities said.More than 70 people injured in the inferno are being hospitalized.The 28-story building at the intersection of Jiaozhou Road and Yuyao Road in Jing'an District, a densely-populated area in Shanghai, was being renovated when it caught fire at about 2:15 p.m. Monday.The fire was mostly extinguished at 6:30 p.m. after local authorities dispatched 25 fire units and more than 100 fire engines to the scene. BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China said on Tuesday it would punish six companies, including affiliates of the country's two oil giants, for selling diesel above the state-set prices, in an effort to ease the diesel shortage and keep soaring prices in check.The companies, including Sinopec's units in Wuhan and Luoyang, and PetroChina's Wuhan unit, were selling diesel at prices as high as 8 percent above the government set price, according to a statement posted on the website of National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's top economic planner.These companies also included local refineries and oil dealers in Shaanxi, Shandong and Jiangsu provinces and according to the NDRC, the acts have exacerbated the diesel shortage and disrupted market order.The commission urged local authorities to seize the illicit revenue from above-ceiling sales and fine the companies up to five-times of their income.To relieve domestic diesel shortages, both Sinopec and PetroChina are increasing diesel imports, while Sinopec said last week it had even suspended diesel exports.According to customs statistics, China's diesel imports in October rose to 400,000 tonnes, surging 60 percent compared with that in September.
