BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese farmers have begun to reap crops as autumn drew to a close, and the nation is expecting a good harvest this year, China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) said here Tuesday in a statement on its website.The forecast is based upon higher average yields and an estimate that China's planting area for autumn crops rose by 10 million Mu (about 667,000 hectares) from one year ago, said the ministry.According to figures from the MOA, a total of 386 million mu of crops had been harvested by Sept. 27, accounting for 33.3 percent of the total.In a break down of the harvest, 130 million mu of rice, or nearly 50 percent of the total rice planted, had been reaped, while 140 million mu of corn and 60.7 million mu of soybean were harvested, accounting for 28.5 percent and 46.5 percent of the total, respectively, said the MOA.The ministry also arranged for 29 million sets of farm equipment to help with the autumn harvest, it said.China's grain output reached 530.8 million tonnes in 2009, the sixth consecutive year of growth in grain yield.In the wake of a severe drought in China's southwestern regions earlier in the year, summer grain output this year stood at 123.1 million tons, down 0.3 percent from one year ago.

BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- China expressed on Sunday its firm opposition to any kind of investigation by the Japanese side on the illegally detained Chinese trawler after the Japanese authorities towed the trawler for a mock collision.In a written statement, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Japan's so-called evidence-taking activities were illegal, invalid and would finally go in vain.China demands the Japanese side to stop activities that would lead to escalation of the situation and release the Chinese fishermen and their ship immediately and unconditionally, Jiang said, stressing it was the only way to solve the problem.Early Sunday morning, the Chinese boat was towed to the sea near Ishigaki island in Okinawa Prefecture to recapture the situation when it collided with two patrol ships of Japanese Coast Guard off Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea on Tuesday.The Chinese trawler under detention stops at the harbor of Ishigaki, Okinawa, Japan, Sept. 9, 2010. BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Property prices in 70 major Chinese cities rose 9.1 percent year on year in September, the slowest growth rate this year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Friday.The rate was down 0.2 percentage points from the 9.3-percent growth rate in August, a statement on the NBS website said.On a month-on-month basis, prices rose 0.5 percent in September.New home prices climbed 11.3 percent year on year in September, also up 0.5 percent from August.Prices for second-hand homes rose 6.2 percent from a year earlier and 0.5 percent on a month-on-month basis.Real estate investment continued to expand in the first three quarters, with the total standing at 3.4 trillion yuan (511.4 billion U.S. dollars), up 36.4 percent from the same period in 2009, the statement said.The property price growth rate peaked this year at 12.8 percent in April.To curb excessive rises in housing prices, the central government introduced a raft of policies in April, including higher down payments and an end to mortgage discounts.It also encouraged local governments to build more affordable housing to increase the supply of housing for low-income people.On Sept. 29, the government announced further measures to check the continuous rise in property prices, including by banning loans for third home purchases and instituting a 50 percent down payment requirement for second-home purchases and a 30 percent down payment for all first-home purchases.Xue Jianxiong, an analyst with the China Real Estate Information Corporation (CRIC), said the overheated property market will likely cool in the next few months.These government's moves will cause transaction volumes to tumble and ease price-increase expectations, Xue added.
