A Rikers Island inmate is back in police custody in New York after attempting to escape on Thursday, officials said.Around 12:30 p.m., the detainee climbed a recreation yard fence and ran to the shoreline, Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Peter Thorne said.The detainee was apprehended by K-9 Correction Officers Larry McCardle and Gregory Braska, Correction Officers' Benevolent Association President Elias Husamudeen said."These two brave officers immediately jumped into action to bring the inmate back into custody without any regards for their own safety," Husamudeen said. A significant drop in the number of plastic bags littering Britain's seabeds suggests that a charge on plastic bags and other efforts to tackle marine litter are working, according to a new report.The study, published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, was carried out by scientists at the UK government's Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas), who analyzed data complied between 1992 and 2017 to reveal a drop of nearly 30% in plastic bags on Britain's seabeds.The report inspected 2,461 trawls off the UK's coasts and found that over the 25-year period, 63% of trawls contained at least one plastic litter item. 663

A New York appeals court has denied a motion by President Donald Trump's attorney to stay the Summer Zervos defamation case pending appeal, meaning the gathering of evidence known as "discovery" can move forward as both parties await a ruling on the appeal.Zervos, a former "Apprentice" contestant, filed a lawsuit against Trump in January 2017 in which she alleged that Trump defamed her in 2016 after she said he sexually assaulted her in 2007.Trump's lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, is appealing the March 20 ruling by New York Supreme Court Justice Jennifer Schecter, who allowed the case to go forward. He wants the appellate court to revisit the matter of whether the Constitution's Supremacy Clause bars a state court from hearing an action against a sitting president -- what would be considered immunity, because it would make the President immune from suit. Schecter ruled it does not. Kasowitz also argues that Schecter erred in denying the President's motion to dismiss or delay the case on First Amendment grounds.Kasowitz said his motion should be granted on the grounds that New York and federal law both mandate a stay pending appeal, that proceeding with the case could irreparably harm Trump, and that the temporary suspension being sought was not designed to delay the case. But the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court denied his motion in a one-page ruling."We look forward to proving Ms. Zervos's claim that defendant lied when he maliciously attacked her for reporting his sexually abusive behavior," said Zervos' attorney, Mariann Meier Wang. A Vero Beach, Florida family woke up to a man stomping on their roof, the Indian River Sheriff’s Office says. When deputies arrived, they say Jacob Futch claimed he was having a meeting with a DEA agent on the roof.The family told deputies that they don’t know Futch, and Futch admitted to not knowing who the agent is, according to an arrest report. A man living in the home told deputies he and this three young sons woke up to Futch yelling, howling and walking down the road around 6 a.m. on Nov. 11.Two hours later, the man says they woke up again after hearing Futch on the roof of his home.When Futch was asked if he was under the influence he said he had injected meth at approximately 2 a.m., an arrest affidavit states.Futch is facing a misdemeanor charge of trespassing. He is being held in the Indian River County Jail on 0 bond. 872

A Minnesota school security guard admitted to authorities on Wednesday that he lied about an active shooting after he accidently shot himself, St. Paul, Minnesota police said in a statement The department reported that Brent Patrick Ahlers, 25, was arrested for filing a false police report. St. Paul Police said that Ahlers told investigators that he was handling his gun when it accidently discharged, sending a bullet through his shoulder. He originally claimed that while working a guard shift at St. Catherine University that he was shot in the woods by a suspect. St. Paul Police said that the incident tied down vast resources, including 55 officers, four canines and a Minnesota State Patrol aircraft. “Last night I was talking to you about an incident that shocked the community,” Sgt. Mike Ernster told the Star-Tribune in a news conference. “It had basically 1,800 students held captive in their dorm rooms at St. Catherine’s, it had residents of the Mac-Groveland and Highland Park communities fearing they would be hurt in their homes.” 1107
