SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heat wave expected to bring record high temperatures to San Diego County this weekend will also bring a double whammy of wildfire danger and energy concerns to the area."We ramp up. We get ready," said Cal Fire Capt. Kendal Bortisser. "We'll have extra engines in place and extra personnel on duty."Cal Fire is already stretched thin, as they continue to help with wildfire efforts across the state. Already in 2020 there have been around 7,400 fires with 1.8 million acres burned so far.Last year at the same time, California had only seen 4,500 fires, burning 63,000 acres.Bortisser said prolonged drought created excess fuel."We're starting to see fires get into those areas where dead trees are, and we're seeing these huge fires burning throughout the state,” Bortisser said.There haven't been any major fires in San Diego County this year. Bortisser said people in San Diego can help lower the fire risk this weekend by putting off any activities that could create sparks."We want you do the right thing, but we want you do the right thing at the right time," said Bortisser. "This weekend is not the time to be out there with the power tools trying to clear weeds, chainsaws and things like that."Bortisser added that there is still some time Friday to clear defensible space around your home, so firefighters can protect it if a wildfire starts.Meanwhile, San Diego Gas & Electric is preparing for the surge of energy demand that comes with high temperatures.The California Independent Systems Operator (CAISO), which manages the state's electric grid, issued a Flex Alert for the weekend. They're telling people to avoid heavy energy usage between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. from Friday through Monday.SDG&E officials say that means San Diegans should not run major appliances like dishwashers or laundry machines during those hours. They also suggest setting air conditioners to 78 degrees to conserve energy."We are staying in very close touch with CAISO," said SDG&E spokesperson Helen Gao. "We're monitoring the weather and grid conditions, so we are ready to respond."At CAISO's command, SDG&E did temporary blackouts for some customers in August during the last heat wave. It was the first time in 20 years that CAISO implemented statewide rolling blackouts.If that needs to happen again this weekend, SDG&E says they'll spread the blackouts across the county so no one area is affected more than another."We'll go by group," said Gao. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A handful of San Diego County fire departments have sent crews across the state to help with the Woolsey and Camp Fires. But Cal Fire officials tell 10News they're making sure that enough resources are left behind to cover any emergencies that happen here."We have an obligation here to make sure we keep enough strategic reserve to stay safe in San Diego," says Cal Fire Battalion Chief Jon Heggie.Through a process called "Mutual Aid," Heggie says Cal Fire sent three strike teams, consisting of 15 engines, to help around the state. That leaves 32 engines in San Diego. Heggie says those engines are placed around the county ready to pounce on any fires that spring up."The conditions they've seen up there are very similar to what we're seeing right now," says Heggie. But, he added that all time off had been canceled for Cal Fire employees while San Diego is in a Red Flag Warning."Everyone from the Chief down to the firefighters, they're staying in a heightened state of readiness," he says. "We'll never exceed those thresholds to make sure that we have enough adequate resources available for any fire that starts here in San Diego."Cal Fire's ability to respond quickly was put to the test Monday, when a house fire erupted in Ramona. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local group called the San Diego Rapid Response Network is calling on the community to help asylum-seekers being released throughout San Diego County. On Monday, the group held a press conference explaining how they have been helping the migrants as they are released by ICE, awaiting their asylum hearing. The network is made up of several local churches, the local ACLU, and Casa Cornelia. Volunteers say they have been helping migrants by providing shelter, food, and medical services. They say they've also made travel arrangements to help the migrants get to their final destination. Volunteers tell 10News the migrants are released with no resources and sometimes late at night. The group says they felt the need to help after ICE ended their policy of connecting the migrants with a family member or a sponsor before their release. ICE tells 10News they always plan for releases during the daylight hours but say sometimes things can get delayed since it is a multi-agency effort. They told us of only one instance where the group was released after sundown. The rapid response network is hoping the community will help with monetary donations so they can continue providing their services. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A plan to essentially force 16 Lemon Grove teachers to resign was approved Tuesday night in a 3-2 vote. The Lemon Grove School District informed the teachers that it would move in a different direction at the end of this school year. The teachers were at the district for two years, the end of their probationary period. Any more time and they would become permanent. The district says it will replace those positions with new teachers for next year. "Our governing board believes that each child deserves the very best," the district said in a statement. "We will continue to provide that to you in Lemon Grove School District.""Why aren't we maintaining the teachers that have been here and have built relationships with our children? Built relationships with our parents? With our community," parent Rosa Carney said. Angela Vento, who has four children in the district, said her 9-year-old son Joshua was upset when he found out his teacher would be let go."She's always there for him," Vento said. "He has epilepsy and she helps him through that."Two teachers who asked to remain anonymous said the district gave them a choice of resigning, or being terminated with a non-renewal status. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local marine is recovering from COVID-19 while deployed overseas.Jennifer Dulaney says her husband, Kyle, was deployed in April and is serving at a base in Okinawa. He tested for COVID-19 earlier this month.“My husband called me on a Monday morning as I was getting ready for work and said he felt like he was getting symptoms,” Jennifer said.Kyle got worse and was eventually sent to the ICU. His condition began to worsen that he qualified for the Remdesivir. It was described as an experimental drug, and doctors needed Jennifer’s permission to administer it to Kyle.Jennifer is a nurse and knew that COVD-19 could be very severe.“I know where COVID can go, they can spiral downwards real fast,” she said, “so for me, the benefits outweighed the risk.”Jennifer said he began to show improvement on the fifth day. She was able to him Friday morning.“They were drawing his lab work because that’s one of the things with the experimental (treatment), they have to watch things very closely,” she described, “but he actually laughed on the phone, he was able to talk to me without coughing. It’s amazing.”She hopes her husband will be out of the ICU within the next two days.During the difficult time, Jennifer took a leave of absence from her job. She said it was difficult to continue working as a nurse while worrying about her husband’s health. So to help with finances, a friend started a GoFundMe for their family. The GoFundMe has received so much more than they expected, she’s going to donate what they don’t spend to a non-profit that helps military families.“It’s so amazing, so I want to take the amazing, so I wanted to pay it forward,” she said. 1688
