(KGTV) - A grieving Poway cat owner says her heart dropped when she heard a distinctive rattling sound coming from the area where two of her cats were playing.Along Utopia Road just past 3 p.m. Thursday, a picture-perfect afternoon turned into a nightmare in Donna McFarlane's backyard. She was inside her home, heard a commotion and saw her 15-year-old tabby Tyler leap onto the patio, before running into the house. As McFarlane stepped out, she heard an ominous sound."It was just a loud, huge rattle," said McFarlane.She grabbed her other cat Tiger and tossed her into the house, away from the source of the rattle. "Behind the hose, the snake was coiled and hissing. The tail was rattling," said McFarlane.McFarlane ran inside and looked for Tyler."Almost didn't want to find him, because I didn't want to see what I was going to find. When I found him in the living room, he was stumbling over and drooling. Where the snake had bit him on the face, his eyes were bloodshot red," said McFarlane.She rushed Tyler to a nearby veterinarian, but the antivenin treatment wasn't enough. Tyler was put down that night."I still cry. It's devastating," said McFarlane.The next day, the snake, a 3-to-4-foot Pacific Coast rattlesnake, was found and relocated.This year, rains have delayed the first rattlesnake sightings by several weeks. But experts believe those rains could lead to a big snake season. More rain means more food for rodents and other snake prey. According to a study published in Clinical Toxicology, rattlesnake bites in the state jump more than 10% after rainy seasons. Back in Poway, since the attack, McFarlane has begun taking out all the trees and plants where snakes could hide. She's also ordered additional fencing to fill in the gaps and installed a device that emits sound waves to ward off snakes. She has three other cats."Will just be watching them a lot more carefully," said McFarlane.McFarlane says her ordeal shows rattlesnakes can turn up anywhere. President Donald Trump acknowledged Monday there would not be time for Congress to vote through new tax cuts before next month's midterm elections.That's after he told reporters on Saturday that Republicans would unveil a new package "sometime just prior, I would say, to November."He conceded in Monday's comments outside the White House there wouldn't be new tax cuts before the November 6 vote. POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - The Jewish community of Poway dedicated a Torah scroll in memory of Lori Kaye, who was killed in the deadly shooting at the Chabad of Poway Synagogue. The dedication ceremony took place inside the Synagogue Wednesday evening, where Kaye was shot and killed. The April 27th anti-Semitic attack injured three other people worshiping on the last day of Passover. The Torah considered Judaism's most sacred object. It is sponsored by the Jaffa Family Foundation of New York, Cleveland, and Minneapolis. Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein described Kaye as a kind and generous soul. "Her legacy is going to continue through this Torah scroll," Goldstein said, motioning to one they dedicated to her. "And every Saturday we take it out, everyone touches it and kisses it, it's like blowing a kiss to Lori in heaven, remembering her forever and ever." (KGTV) - The Poway Unified School District sent parents an email over the weekend on their action plan after a water boil advisory was issued."My boys and I have had the discussion of the importance of safety," Mother and Senior Management Analyst of Poway Public Works Jessica Parks said of her twin high schoolers. "The rule of thumb is don't get the water in your mouth."The City of Poway issued a precautionary boil water advisory Saturday.The city says it believes the recent storm possibly compromised the potable drinking water system.As a precaution, the city is advising resident to boil tap water or use bottled water for drinking or cooking until further notice."I am really pleased with the Poway Unified School District for getting that message out there, speaking to all the parents and letting them know safety for their children is number one," Parks said.Poway Unified School District sent this email to parents: 951
