A former East Pittsburgh police officer charged in the shooting death of 17-year-old Antwon Rose II will begin his trial on Tuesday. The killing of the unarmed black teenager last year triggered protests and outrage in Pittsburgh over the officer's use of deadly force. The former officer, Michael Rosfeld, 30, faces a criminal homicide charge, which includes murder, voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter under Pennsylvania law.The jury has been selected from Dauphin County, which is about 200 miles from Pittsburgh, after a ruling that the publicity around the case had affected the jury pool in Allegheny County. A babysitter is behind bars in New Mexico after allegedly leaving a 2-year-old girl in a hot car for several hours last week. The toddler, Zariah Hasheme, was pronounced dead when officers with the Hobbs Police Department responded to the scene in the 1800 block of N. Turner at about 1:27 p.m. on Sept. 17. Investigators say the child was left in the care of 41-year-old Tammie Brooks at about 6:30 that morning and she was supposed to drop the girl off at day care. However, police say Brooks drove to her place of employment instead and only realized the child was still in the car after running an errand, hours later. The heartbreaking loss is even more devastating for the girl’s parents, who considered Zariah their miracle baby. The girl’s mother, Demi Petrowski, 784

A former top White House official on Thursday delivered a full-throated rebuttal to the "fictional narrative" pushed by President Donald Trump and his GOP allies, while a US diplomat in the Ukrainian embassy provided impeachment investigators with a firsthand account of the President asking for an investigation of his political opponent.Fiona Hill, who served as Trump's top Russia adviser until she left the administration this summer, warned the House Intelligence Committee as part of the impeachment inquiry's last scheduled public hearing that the Kremlin is prepared to strike again in 2020 and remains a serious threat to American democracy that the United States must seek to combat."Based on questions and statements I have heard, some of you on this committee appear to believe that Russia and its security services did not conduct a campaign against our country — and that perhaps, somehow, for some reason, Ukraine did," Hill said. "This is a fictional narrative that has been perpetrated and propagated by the Russian security services themselves."Hill is testifying on Capitol Hill on Thursday alongside 1132

Washington's state capitol has become ground zero in the debate surrounding whether parents should be able to opt out of getting their children vaccinated. More than 60 kids have been diagnosed with measles in Washington, and the vast majority of them did not have a measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. If passed, two bills in the state’s legislature would prohibit parents from opting out of vaccines for philosophical reasons. Cindy Sharpe, with the Washington State Medical Association, supports the bills. "Every child that gets a vaccination protects another child who can’t be vaccinated,” says Sharpe. Susie Olson-Corgan, with Informed Choice Washington, opposes the bills. She says her son is one of the very rare cases of kids that had a medical complication as a result of the MMR vaccine."That needs to be an individual discussion that's had, so the patient is looked at as a person and not as a population," Olsen-Corgan says. This debate isn’t just happening in Washington. Vaccination has become a national hot topic. In a recent interview with Axios, FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb suggested that a federal agency may one day step in to mandate vaccines. He stopped short of saying the FDA might take on that role. It’s an idea Sharpe says she might support, but Olson-Corgan says it concerning."I think it's a slippery slope when you start taking away freedoms, any freedoms in America," Olson-Corgan says. 1445
