Clint Adams has turned his Utah basement into part science lab, part ammunition workshop.“I take a primer and put it in, and then, I load the charge,” Adams explained as he worked to load his own ammo.Adams' measurements are so precise, he measures the weight of the bullet he’s loading to the gram.“The brass I’m using is Alpha Brass and the powder is Hodgdon Varget,” Adams said.That may sound like a different language to you and me, but to the professional long-range precision shooter, it’s basic.“You can have the best fundamentals as a shooter, but if your ammo isn’t better than you, then you’re not going to have success,” Adams said.Before COVID-19, Adams would travel and compete in national competitions, but now he is spending more time in his backyard dry firing.“I’ll practice a lot like this, where I just lock into a tripod and practice a lot of things,” he said.Adams uses no magazines or no bullets when he practices now. There just isn't enough out there he said.“I definitely get some weird looks from people who may not know me or what I’m doing,” Adams said.It is not ideal, but there aren’t many options these days.“You know, it’s been the hardest thing to find primer and powder right now,” Adams said. “I just can’t believe how hard primers are to find.”At a gun store about 20 miles from Adams’ home, business has been booming.“This year has been a really good year,” said gun store owner Dave Larsen. “It turns our pandemic and civil unrest are really good for business.”Since March, Larsen has had a hard time keeping his shelves stocked.“Yeah, after people went and cleaned out the Costco for toilet paper, they came to the gun stores.He says his supply is one-third of what it was in January.“Some manufacturers source stuff from around the world and their supply lines were compromised during COVID and their distribution became,” Larsen explained. “When the demand ramped up, things really got crazy.”Back at Adams’ house, it was beginning to feel a little like Christmas morning.He got to fire real ammo for the first time in months.“I’d definitely say the shortage is affecting my ability to get out and stay sharp and keep my skills top level,” Adams said.A series of road trips all over the state made this day possible. Adams plans to do whatever it takes to keep up on his craft.“Yeah, I’ll drive three or four hours to be able to buy 1,000 primers to keep doing this,” he said.Just don’t ask him to reveal his favorite shooting location.“Not only is ammo really hard to come by, but so are good hunting spots,” he said with a smile. 2622

"But here we are in this time where you have to do what you have to do to keep the doors open."Thorn has been collecting art for 25 years, often buying pieces from artists who hold shows in her gallery. While her shop was closed during the Pademic, she made the difficult decision to go through her warehouse and see what she could sell."I got very emotional, and I almost broke down," Thorn says. "We needed to make some very serious decisions on how we're going to keep the doors open. And it requires a sacrifice to let go of these things."Thorn says her sale offers even non-collectors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase an investment piece. It's a disturbing generational shift that puts young people in greater peril than many realize and poses an even bigger danger to the older people who cross their paths. National figures show that almost as soon as states began reopening, people 18 to 49 years old quickly became the age bracket most likely to be diagnosed with new cases. And although every age group saw an increase in cases during the first week in June, the numbers shot up fastest in the younger age group.“The virus hasn’t changed. We have changed our behaviors,” said Ali Mokdad, professor of health metrics sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle according to The Associated Press. “Younger people are more likely to be out and taking a risk.”In Florida, people aged between 15 and 34 make up nearly a third of all cases of COVID-19 in the state. In the past week, two 17-year-olds have died after contracting the virus.Officials fear that a surge in infections among older Americans could come next.“People between the ages 18 and 50 don’t live in some sort of a bubble,” Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt said, according to The Associated Press. “They are the children and grandchildren of vulnerable people. Some drivers took advantage of roads and highways emptied by the coronavirus pandemic by pushing well past the speed limit, a trend that continues even as states try to get back to normal.The Iowa State Patrol recorded a 101% increase from January through August over the four-year average in tickets for speeds exceeding 100 mph, along with a 75% increase in tickets for speeds of 25 mph or more over the posted speed limit.California Highway Patrol officers issued more than 15,000 tickets from mid-March through Aug. 19 for speeds exceeding 100 mph, more than a 100% increase over the same time period a year ago. That includes a continuing spike from May on.The most likely explanation is drivers taking advantage of more open roads because of the pandemic, said Officer Ian Hoey, a spokesman for the California agency.The patrol planned a heavy presence over the Labor Day weekend, he said.“Let’s just slow down a bit and enjoy the day!” the agency’s Santa Rosa division tweeted June 21, along with a photo of a laser speed device recording a car going 127 mph.In Ohio, state troopers have issued 2,200 tickets since April for driving more than 100 mph, a 61% increase over the same time period a year ago. The highest ticketed speed was 147 mph in the Cincinnati area.While traffic has decreased 15% from February through July, the number of people driving more than 80 mph on Ohio roads jumped by 30%, according to sensor data analyzed by the state Department of Transportation.Columbus resident Karen Poltor experienced the trend firsthand last month when three cars raced past her on state Route 315, an expressway through the city.“They were flying in the left lane and weaving around cars,” said Poltor, who estimated their speed at between 90 and 100 mph. “It was terrifying to watch.”Ohio authorities are especially troubled that speeds not only picked up in the early days of the pandemic when roads were emptier, but they’ve also continued even as the state reopened and roads became more congested.“We’ve seen people continue to go those speeds even though there now is more traffic, which makes it even more dangerous,” said Lt. Some city and state governments across the country have made wearing masks in public mandatory. Now, businesses are finding they also need to develop policies for face coverings."No pun intended but there’s no one size fits all here. Employers need to be looking at the state and local laws to determine whether masks are mandatory. I know that several states have mandatory mask requirements in public spaces, so of course they’ll want to look at those laws to make sure they're complying with them," says Amber Clayton, Knowledge Center Director for the Society for Human Resources Management.Clayton says employers will also need to consider employees who may not be able to wear a mask, whether it be for medical or other reasons."Employers may have to potentially provide a reasonable accommodation in those situations. That might look like allowing the person to work from home, taking leave or modifying their workspaces where they're working within an area that is maybe not as much public facing," says Clayton.For medical reasons, employers could require a doctor's note. Whether it's an employee handbook or company-wide email, employers should have some type of documentation so employees and any customers coming into the office are aware of expectations when it comes to wearing face coverings. Valerie Keels, who heads up her HR department at Gavi in Washington, DC, has developed a mask-wearing policy for her office."The building has imposed those restrictions, as well, in the common areas so when people come into the building they have to wear a mask. When they go into the elevator they have to wear a mask. So it's just consistent with what's going in the building," says Keels.Keels has what they call a "Code Red" which means people can come into the office if they register online. It helps them keep track of the number of people in the office space. Once they get to the office, their temperature is taken and they're given a mask to wear for when it's needed.When you're in an enclosed office space, you can take off your mask. "And even when you're at your own work space because we're also respecting social distancing," says Keels.As for enforcing a mask policy, some businesses could come across people who disagree with a face covering policy."Employers have the responsibility to keep the workplaces safe for their employees and if this is something that's required and the employee refused to wear it, then there needs to be something in place to address that - whether it's sending the employee home or providing leave, or making modifications to the worksite," says Clayton.It's important for employers to work with people and their individual situations before resorting to reprimands. Keeping the lines of communication open so everyone's working environment is safe. 2814
